Two cops had gone missing, and their boss wanted to know what had happened to them. But he wasn’t sure just who he could trust down at headquarters, so he gave the job to Larry Kent, the only man he felt he could rely on. Larry soon found himself up to his shoulder holster in trouble. Whatever the missing cops had been investigating, it was big. That’s why the dapper little chili-eating hustler Pete Grills wanted him dead. Why the seductive Ester Newell tried to recruit him rather than fight him. Why the shallow TV personality Grant Kelso had to die...and why the stakes were higher than Larry could ever imagine. About Larry Kent Larry Kent started his life as the hero of a half-hour radio show on Australia’s Macquarie Network, and was inspired chiefly by the success of the hardboiled mysteries of Carter Brown. As the popularity of the radio show grew, the Cleveland Publishing Pty. Ltd decided to publish a series of Larry Kent novels. Two authors, Don Haring (an American who lived in Australia) and Des R Dunn (a Queenslander) are primarily associated with the series. Between 1954 and 1983, Larry appeared in well over 400 adventures. Kent is a typical hardboiled private eye. He smokes Luckies, drinks whisky, and within the first dozen pages or so, has usually met a dame and is fighting for his life. His mean streets are pure New York (although the radio series was set in Australia) and include Harlem nightclubs and Jersey roadhouses. Generally the body counts are high: about six deaths per novel. But there’s another side to Larry Kent. He’s a Vietnam war veteran, he used to work for the CIA and still does, usually reluctantly, on occasion. And once, when an attempt was made on his life, the Agency paid for him to have plastic surgery that altered his appearance ... something he never quite managed to get used to. Larry Kent is fast and fun, and Piccadilly Publishing is proud to be bringing his cases to a whole new g ungekürzt. A scientist in Switzerland had perfected a synthetic fuel that was cheaper and cleaner than oil, and everyone wanted to get their hands on it. Some wanted to make it available to the world. Others wanted to make sure the formula never saw the light of day again. The key to finding it lay with private eye Larry Kent, who was pressed back into service by his old masters at the CIA. And yet, he soon defected to the cause of a power-hungry billionaire recluse who wanted to rule the world. What was he doing? He was supposed to be one of the good guys, wasn’t he? But he seems to be playing both ends against middle - for his own gain!About Larry KentLarry Kent started his life as the hero of a half-hour radio show on Australia’s Macquarie Network, and was inspired chiefly by the success of the hard-boiled mysteries of Carter Brown. When Larry Kent said good-bye to Eve Delmar, she was alive. The next morning she turned up dead - shot to death. But who wanted to kill her, and why? The chief suspect was her estranged husband...but he was a friend of Larry’s, and when he denied murder, Larry believed him. So he set out to find the real killer and save his friend from a hot date with the electric chair. But the case soon turned even more complicated. What part did nightclub owner Earl Salem play in it all? How did a seven-year-old out-of-state murder tie in to it? It was only when someone decided that Larry himself should be his next victim that he realized he was up against something bigger than he could have possibly suspected. About Larry Kent: Larry Kent started his life as the hero of a half-hour radio show on Australia’s Macquarie Network and was inspired chiefly by the success of the hard-boiled mysteries of Carter Brown. The most difficult killer to catch is the one who doesn’t realize he’s a killer! That was Larry Kent’s dilemma when he signed on to protect beautiful actress Valerie Nash. Whoever he was, the mystery murderer was two distinct personalities in one…and the dark side of him was slowly but surely gaining dominance. As bodies started piling up, Larry uncovered one man’s dirty secret and another’s violent past. But even when he worked out who the killer was, there was still one more problem to overcome…to make the man realize just how many lives he’d taken in the name of his twisted love for Valerie.... About Larry Kent  Larry Kent started his life as the hero of a half-hour radio show on Australia’s Macquarie Network, and was inspired chiefly by the success of the hardboiled mysteries of Carter Brown. It began when Larry Kent’s old boss at the CIA asked him to come back for one more assignment – to a kill a double-agent who also happened to be one of his closest friends. Larry couldn’t go through with it…and it was just as well that he didn’t, because nothing was as it appeared to be. An enemy of the United States had perfected a terrifying mind-manipulation drug – and after that, it became Larry’s job to find out just who that enemy was. The trail took him first to Mexico City, then on to Australia, where he met up with an old love…and an even older enemy, who wanted him dead! About Larry Kent Larry Kent started his life as the hero of a half-hour radio show on Australia’s Macquarie Network, and was inspired chiefly by the success of the hardboiled mysteries of Carter Brown. Fairy tales for our times from the Pulitzer Prize-winning author of The Hours. A poisoned apple and a monkey's paw with the power to change fate; a girl whose extraordinarily long hair causes catastrophe; a man with one human arm and one swan's wing; and a house deep in the forest, constructed of gumdrops and gingerbread, vanilla frosting and boiled sugar. In A Wild Swan and Other Tales, the people and the talismans of lands far, far away - the mythic figures of our childhoods and the source of so much of our wonder - are transformed by Michael Cunningham into stories of sublime revelation. Here are the moments that our fairy tales forgot or deliberately concealed: the years after a spell is broken, the rapturous instant of a miracle unexpectedly realized, or the fate of a prince only half cured of a curse. The Beast stands ahead of you in line at the convenience store, buying smokes and a Slim Jim, his devouring smile aimed at the cashier. A malformed little man with a knack for minor acts of wizardry goes to disastrous lengths to procure a child. A loutish and lazy Jack prefers living in his mother's basement to getting a job, until the day he trades a cow for a handful of magic beans. Re-imagined by one of the most gifted storytellers of his generation, our bedtime stories been this dark, this perverse, or this true. Program contains music composed specifically for the audiobook by Billy Hough and his bandmates in GarageDogs. Billy Hough says: "The original piece 'A Wild Swan' was written as a gift to Michael, due to my incredibly strong reaction to hearing these beautiful stories for the first time. I enlisted the brilliant Lili Taylor to alternate the stories with me, and wrote a series of short pieces of music, for their eventual inclusion on this album. I wanted to use the music to illustrate the tension between the ancient and the modern, much in the same way Michael has done in the stories themselves." /p ungekürzt. Language: English. Most people start smoking at a younger stage of life where, maybe, they're under a lot of stress. There's a lot of uncertainty, a lot of self-doubt. They don't feel self-confident in themselves. Then, over the years, they kind of grow up a bit. They mature a bit, and they get to the point where they're a little bit more motivated to care for themselves and look after themselves. They get to that point where they feel a strong desire to want to stop smoking. They use some patches, change some routines, they break the habit, and everything is going fine. They stay on the wagon so long as life doesn't get in the way.The realistic probability of the treatment being successful long term becomes a lot more unpredictable if you're the kind of person who smokes not just because it's a bad habit, but if you're the kind of smoker who uses cigarettes as a coping mechanism or, essentially, you're using smoking to sort of medicate your emotions. If that describes you, and you try patches and therapies focusing purely on breaking the habit, I mean, you'll be fine so long as life is fine. But once when you hit one of the hurdles up ahead you will want to slip back into your old ways and habits, by that point, you want to make sure that you've got a new and healthier coping mechanism installed to make sure that you don't regress into your old familiar patterns. You will find out exactly how to create better coping mechanisms in this audiobook. The other thing that happens to a lot of people that use smoking as a coping mechanism is, once the particular therapy gets rid of the desire to smoke, then they end up transferring that desire onto something else, some other addiction, some other coping mechanism that they use to medicate their emotions with instead. Now, it could be other drugs, but the most common thing is foods. A lot of people end up addicted to comfort eating instead. Again, if you want to learn how to better avoid this trap, this audiobook is for you./ ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Shane Cuthbert.
