Car Talk, Adieu, Puzzler King, June 5, 2010, Hörbuch, Digital, 53min
This week on Car Talk Tom and Ray pay tribute to late puzzler mentor Martin Gardner, and they do it in true Magliozzi fashion--by recalling an embarrassing on-air moment, and then promptly swiping one of Martin's classic puzzles. Next, in first-rate Magliozzi form, the guys turn a leaky moon roof into a relationship test, suggest that one caller decorate his living room table with the passenger seat from his Chevy Malibu, and utter the sage words, "That's what it is, if that's what it is." And, on Stump the Chumps, did Ray successfully diagnose a "thud bump echo" in two tries, or will he demand a third swing at the problem? All this and lots more, this week on Car Talk. But when he returned to help, he found himself caught up in memories of his childhood in the countryside. Essays 2: On the Firmness of the Wise Man , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 58min
In On the Firmness of the Wise Man Seneca argues that Stoicism is not as harsh as it first appears. Recalling the figure of Cato the Younger, Seneca argues that Cato as a wise person suffered neither injury nor insult. Although Serenus objects to this paradox, Seneca provides further analogies to emphasize the impervious nature of the wise person. In chapter 5 Seneca distinguishes between contumelia (insults) and iniuria (injuries). The rest of the treatise through to chapter 19 consists of discussions on the nature of both themes, showing that the wise person is immune from both insults and injuries. Seneca concludes the treatise praising the idea of the wise person while offering practical advice for all of us who are imperfect. Translation by Aubrey Stewart, produced by Vox Stoica ungekürzt. Little Wins: The Huge Power of Thinking Like a Toddler , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 434min
Never mind growing up; it's time we grew down. There are some 400 million people worldwide whose creativity, curiosity and determination put the rest of us to shame. They are experts in their field but have no experience to speak of. Once, you were one of them, too. They are toddlers - and they hold the key to unlocking our potential as adults, at work and in life. In Little Wins, Ella's Kitchen founder Paul Lindley reveals the nine characteristics and behaviours that we can all learn from recalling our toddler selves. From attention-grabbing tactics that would humble most marketing experts to the art of thinking divergently, Lindley shows how much we've lost in getting old - and how we can get it back. ungekürzt. Cabaret: A Roman Riddle , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 361min
Freda, a struggling mortician in working-class Rome, only married her repulsive ventriloquist husband, Alberto, because it was prophesied that she'd do so. Now that he's vanished mysteriously along with his equally abhorrent dummy (who Freda suspects is actually a midget), she'd like them both to stay missing - though she's devastated by the simultaneous disappearance of her soul mate, Pierino, her beloved talking parrot. While the police investigate this series of possible crimes, Freda will continue embalming by day, unleashing her caged passions at night in a seedy cabaret (until a tragic fire leaves the proprietor with a tuba stuck on his head), trying to make do with a talking hamster in lieu of dear Pierino…and recalling the vagaries of life that led her to this unfortunate juncture. ungekürzt. Summer of the Star: A Western Story , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 439min
Recalling his early life as a young cowboy, 62-year-old Madison Carter remembers his first love: Her name was Estrella O'Sullivan, and he met her the summer he turned 16 back in 1873. The summer of 1873 marked Madison's last drive up what is now called the Chisholm Trail. It was the first time he tasted oysters and the only time he pinned on a badge. It was the summer of longhorns, miserable heat, friendship and betrayal, and murder. In the end it was the summer the whole world came crumbling down on the United States, and Madison's world crashed, too. The summer of 1873 was the year Madison watched a bunch of men die. One of them was a man he killed, an encounter one never forgets. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Traber Burns.
