An action-packed dinosaur hunt...wave after wave of bloodthirsty Nazis desperately trying to mow down our heroes...and yes, an appearance by Jesus Himself. All in a couple days' work for Dr. Phineas Templeton. A quirky English chap with a taste for fine scotch, Dr. Templeton builds a time machine at the behest of his mysterious benefactor. His mission? To meet Jesus Christ Himself, and garner all of the fame, recognition, and accolades that writing an epic time travelogue would bring.  Unfortunately for Finny, Jesus is actually a fellow time traveler, a hippie named Trent from Colorado in the future. While Trent explains that the past is fixed and immutable (“What happened, like, happened, man...”), Dr. Templeton realizes that he's made a horrible oversight in his calculations, and can't return to his own time period. The only way home is to follow a list of cryptic instructions his benefactor has hidden on the time machine, which sends him on a madcap, at times hilarious voyage from watching his hero, Sir Isaac Newton, be berated by a high school physics teacher, to hunting dinosaurs, to rescuing two colorful American soldiers and fighting Nazis hellbent on his destruction. A novel that's been called equal parts The Da Vinci Code and Back to the Future, Jesus Was a Time Traveler combines quirky humor, thought-provoking concepts, intriguing clues, and a finicky universe that would like nothing more than to keep things as they are. ungekürzt. In ill health following a stroke, Sir Walter Scott wrote Letters on Demonology and Witchcraft at the behest of his son-in-law, J. G. Lockhart, who worked for a publishing firm. The book proved popular, and Scott was paid £600, which he desperately needed. (Despite his success as a novelist, Scott was almost ruined when the Ballantyne publishing firm, where he was a partner, went bankrupt in 1826.) Letters was written when educated society believed itself in enlightened times due to advances in modern science. Letters, however, revealed that all social classes still held beliefs in ghosts, witches, warlocks, fairies, elves, diabolism, the occult, and even werewolves. Sourcing from prior 16th- and 17th-century treatises on demonology, along with contemporary accounts from England, Europe, and North America (Cotton Mather's Magnalia Christi, for one), Scott's discourses on the psychological, religious, physical, and preternatural explanations for these beliefs are essential for acolytes of the dark and macabre; the letters dealing with witch hunts, trials (Letters Eight and Nine), and torture are morbidly compelling. Scott was neither fully pro-rational modernity nor totally anti-superstitious past, as his skepticism of one of the "new" sciences (skullology, as he calls it) is made clear in a private letter to a friend. Thus, Letters is both a personal and intellectual examination of conflicting belief systems, at a time when popular science began to challenge superstition in earnest. ungekürzt. Language: English. Carnage and Courage is the story of an American woman's journey from upper-crust ingénue to a career in the US diplomatic corps. At President Franklin Delano Roosevelt's behest, Page Wilson left the US to serve in London with Ambassador Joseph Kennedy as he took up his post just before World War II began and the Blitz commenced. With the conflict in Europe already underway, Wilson, working with Kennedy, shares the grip of war with the men and women who are engaged against Germany. When the bombs finally fall on Britain, Kennedy sends Wilson back to America - fulfilling a promise he and Roosevelt made to keep her safe - where she anxiously awaits US involvement. Upon meeting the man she will marry, a combat pilot, her role begins to mirror that of so many women of war era - the struggle to maintain a home that is re-billeted constantly and the worry for her husband in combat. Wilson's journey starts with an appointment from the highest levels of government and continues along a path many young women would take as America fought to bring peace to the world. These women's lives are a shared battle through the years of the worst war the world has ever known, the years of struggle between Munich and Hiroshima, between certain death and brave survival, not only for the men and women under arms, but for their wives and families back home as well. ungekürzt. He was known for his wisdom and was called "old young man" by his friends. At the behest of his parents, Macarius got married, but his wife would soon die, along with his parents. He then gave all his money to the poor and sought out an elder to instruct him. The elder he attached himself to guided him in the spiritual science of watchfulness, fasting, and prayer. However, when the woman's delivery drew near, her labour became exceedingly difficult. She could not give birth until she revealed the true father. When she did, the town came asking for his forgiveness, but he had fled into the Nitrian Desert to escape glory. While in the desert, he visited Anthony the Great and learned monasticism from him. The 12 crimes of Christmas: Bart Sagan is a thief, yes, but more or less a good guy - at least, he wouldn’t rob an orphanage if he didn’t have to. Not at Christmastime, anyway. But then the local crime boss, Harry King, loses a shipment of drugs and orders Bart to burglarize the 12 addresses to which it’s been accidentally sent. Can Bart and his ragtag band of independent criminals keep their Christmas spirit while breaking and entering at the behest of a drug lord? Can they keep their lives if they don’t? A comic crime caper for the holiday, “Wise Guy” retells the story of Balthasar, one of the three Wise Men who followed a star from the east for the first Christmas. Or as much of Balthasar, anyway, as a confused and slightly hangdog minor thief can manage. As much of a Wise Man as a Wise Guy can be. The author of three best-selling Kindle Singles, Joseph Bottum is a widely published essayist and poet - whose account of winter on the American prairie, “The Christmas Plains” (from Image/Random House), has been named an instant holiday classic. He is, as the essayist Andrew Ferguson has noted "one of America’s most gifted writers, with a perfect ear and a matchless style". He lives far off in the Black Hills of South Dakota. “Wise Guy” is his first foray into Christmas fiction. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Brian Troxell. In the thrilling conclusion to the "deftly and originally executed" (Booklist) New York Times best-selling trilogy, Vaelin Al Sorna must help his queen reclaim her realm. Only his enemy has a dangerous new collaborator, one with powers darker than Vaelin has ever encountered. "The Ally is there, but only ever as a shadow, unexplained catastrophe, or murder committed at the behest of a dark, vengeful spirit. Sorting truth from myth is often a fruitless task." After fighting back from the brink of death, Queen Lyrna is determined to repel the invading Volarian army and regain the independence of the Unified Realm. Except to accomplish her goals, she must do more than rally her loyal supporters. She must align herself with forces she once found repugnant - those who possess the strange and varied gifts of the Dark - and take the war to her enemy's doorstep. Victory rests on the shoulders of Vaelin Al Sorna, now named battle lord of the realm. However, his path is riddled with difficulties. For the Volarian enemy has a new weapon on their side, one that Vaelin must destroy if the realm is to prevail - a mysterious Ally with the ability to grant unnaturally long life to her servants. And defeating one who cannot be killed is a nearly impossible feat, especially when Vaelin's blood-song, the mystical power that has made him the epic fighter he is, has gone ominously silent. ungekürzt. For the very first time in audio, Dudley Sutton reads the pioneering science-fiction serial Stories of Other Worlds: A Honeymoon in Space, written by George Griffith and originally published over six parts in Pearson Magazine at the end of the 19th century in the UK. The adventures, here collected as one audio edition, see his newly married adventurers, exemplars of the 'Race That Rules', exploring planets in different stages of geological and Darwinian evolution on an educational odyssey, drawing heavily on earlier cosmic voyages. Very much products of their time, the stories hold up well against greats such as HG Wells and Arthur Conan Doyle. A truly fantastic piece of Victorian science fiction. As an explorer of the real world, Griffith shattered the existing record for voyaging around the world at the behest of Sir Arthur Pearson, completing his journey in just 65 days. He also helped discover the source of the Amazon river. He died of cirrhosis of the liver at the age of 48 in 1906. In this collection, all six original short stories are brought together and read by the legendary Dudley Sutton (known to so many as Tinker from the Lovejoy TV series): Book 1: A Trip to the Moon Book 2: The World of the War God Book 3: A Glimpse of the Silent Star Book 4: The World of the Crystal Cities Book 5: In Saturn’s Realm Book 6: Homeward Bound ungekürzt.
