Summary and Analysis of 1984 by George Orwell , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 33min
This is an audio summary and anaylsis of 1984 by George Orwell. 1984 is a dystopian novel published in 1949 by English author George Orwell. The novel is set in Airstrip One, formerly Great Britain, a province of the superstate Oceania, whose residents are victims of perpetual war, omnipresent government surveillance, and public manipulation. Oceania's political ideology, euphemistically named English Socialism (shortened to "Ingsoc" in Newspeak, the government's invented language that will replace English or Oldspeak) is enforced by the privileged, elite Inner Party. Via the "Thought Police", the Inner Party persecutes individualism and independent thinking, which are regarded as "thoughtcrimes". The tyranny is ostensibly overseen by a mysterious leader known as Big Brother, who enjoys an intense cult of personality. The Party "seeks power entirely for its own sake. It is not interested in the good of others; it is interested solely in power". The protagonist of the novel, Winston Smith, is a member of the Outer Party, who works for the Ministry of Truth, or Minitrue in Newspeak. Minitrue is responsible for propaganda and historical revisionism. Smith's job is to rewrite past newspaper articles so the historical record always supports the Party's agenda. The workers are told they are correcting misquotations, when they are actually writing false information in the place of fact. Minitrue also destroys all previous editions of revised work. This method ensures there is no proof of government interference. Smith is a diligent and skillful worker, but he secretly hates the Party and dreams of rebellion against Big Brother. ungekürzt. Letters to a Young Muslim , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 298min
From the ambassador of the UAE to Russia comes a bold and intimate exploration of what it means to be a Muslim in the 21st century. In a series of personal letters to his sons, Omar Saif Ghobash offers a short and highly listenable manifesto that tackles our current global crisis with the training of an experienced diplomat and the personal responsibility of a father. Today's young Muslims will be tomorrow's leaders, and yet too many are vulnerable to extremist propaganda that seems omnipresent in our technological age. The burning question, Ghobash argues, is how moderate Muslims can unite to find a voice that is true to Islam while actively and productively engaging in the modern world. What does it mean to be a good Muslim? What is the concept of a good life? And is it acceptable to stand up and openly condemn those who take the Islamic faith and twist it to suit their own misguided political agendas? In taking a hard look at these seemingly simple questions, Ghobash encourages his sons to face issues others insist are not relevant or not applicable or that may even be Islamophobic. These letters serve as a clear-eyed inspiration for the next generation of Muslims to understand how to be faithful to their religion and still navigate through the complexities of today's world. They also reveal an intimate glimpse into a world many are unfamiliar with and offer to provide an understanding of the everyday struggles Muslims face around the globe. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narcissist and the Art of Foreshadowing: Overt and Covert Threats and their Maddening Efficacy: Transcend Mediocrity, Book 153 , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 24min
The narcissist says things like "how do you know we'll be together in two years", or "we should sign a prenuptial agreement when we get married." Is it your imagination, or was the narcissist just warning you of things to come? You don't want to seem as though you are crazy by making off-the-wall assumptions or predicting the future, but the narcissist drops hints of impending doom. You are never sure when to call his bluff. The narcissist is a character in his own story. He employs the tactic of foreshadowing throughout his storytelling. He is omnipresent and omnipotent. He detests and resents anyone who paints the story for him, and thus he seeks to tell the story even in advance of itself. He wants to be the director, the storyteller, the adversary, and the hero. He narrates his life and his intentions so that he doesn't feel as though anyone else has a say over what will happen to him. The narcissist isn't conscientious of others, or agreeable. He sees himself as a man's man. He sees himself as being resourceful and self-supporting. He is resentful of his need to connect with or work with other people. He will constantly remind other people that he doesn't need them around. He insists on taking care of himself, and relying on others must mean that he is weak. He resents anyone else who tells him what to do, or how to do it. Download now to hear more! ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: D Gaunt. The Library of Alexandria and the Lighthouse of Alexandria: The Ancient Egyptian City's Most Famous Sites , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 155min
In the modern world, libraries are taken for granted by most people, perhaps because their presence is ubiquitous. Every school has a library, large libraries can be found in every major city, and even most small towns have public libraries. However, the omnipresent nature of libraries is a fairly recent historical phenomenon, because libraries were still few and far between before the 19th century. For centuries in the Western world, during what is known as the Middle Ages, written knowledge was guarded closely and hidden away in private repositories, usually by the religious classes, and hidden away in private repositories. The lack of libraries in the West helped contribute to the popular imagination of the ancient Library at Alexandria, and all the myths and legends that have come to be associated with it, but the Library of Alexandria deserves its reputation. While the exact nature of the Library remains murky, it functioned for at least several centuries and is believed to have housed hundreds of thousands of books, most written as scrolls on papyrus, and it essentially became the culmination of two ancient literary and cultural traditions converging: the Greek and Egyptian. Of course, the most controversial aspect of the Library of Alexandria is its destruction, which is still a topic of debate today. Over 2,000 years ago, two ancient writers named Antipater of Sidon and Philo of Byzantium authored antiquity's most well-known tour guides. After the two Greeks had traveled around the Mediterranean, they wrote of what they considered to be the classical world's greatest construction projects. ungekürzt. Language: English. Altered Traits: Science Reveals How Meditation Changes Your Mind, Brain, and Body , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 548min
Two New York Times best-selling authors unveil new research showing what meditation can really do for the brain. In the last 20 years, meditation and mindfulness have gone from being kind of cool to becoming an omnipresent Band-Aid for fixing everything from your weight to your relationship to your achievement level. Unveiling here the kind of cutting-edge research that has made them giants in their fields, Daniel Goleman and Richard J Davidson show us the truth about what meditation can really do for us, as well as exactly how to get the most out of it. Sweeping away common misconceptions and neuromythology to open listeners' eyes to the ways data has been distorted to sell mind-training methods, the authors demonstrate that beyond the pleasant states mental exercises can produce, the real payoffs are the lasting personality traits that can result. But short daily doses will not get us to the highest level of lasting positive change - even if we continue for years - without specific additions. More than sheer hours, we need smart practice, including crucial ingredients such as targeted feedback from a master teacher and a more spacious, less attached view of the self, all of which are missing in widespread versions of mind training. The authors also reveal the latest data from Davidson's own lab that point to a new methodology for developing a broader array of mind-training methods with larger implications for how we can derive the greatest benefits from the practice. Exciting, compelling, and grounded in new research, this is one of those rare books that has the power to change us at the deepest level. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Daniel Goleman. Purity: A Novel , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 1500min
A magnum opus for our morally complex times from the author of Freedom. Young Pip Tyler doesn't know who she is. She knows that her real name is Purity, that she's saddled with $130,000 in student debt, that she's squatting with anarchists in Oakland, and that her relationship with her mother - her only family - is hazardous. But she doesn't have a clue who her father is, why her mother chose to live as a recluse with an invented name, or how she'll ever have a normal life. Enter the Germans. A glancing encounter with a German peace activist leads Pip to an internship in South America with The Sunlight Project, an organization that traffics in all the secrets of the world - including, Pip hopes, the secret of her origins. TSP is the brainchild of Andreas Wolf, a charismatic provocateur who rose to fame in the chaos following the fall of the Berlin Wall. Now on the lam in Bolivia, Andreas is drawn to Pip for reasons she doesn't understand, and the intensity of her response to him upends her conventional ideas of right and wrong. Purity is a grand story of youthful idealism, extreme fidelity, and murder. The author of The Corrections and Freedom has imagined a world of vividly original characters - Californians and East Germans, good parents and bad parents, journalists and leakers - and he follows their intertwining paths through landscapes as contemporary as the omnipresent Internet and as ancient as the war between the sexes. Purity is the most daring and penetrating book yet by one of the major writers of our time. This audiobook includes a bonus conversation with the author. ungekürzt. Language: English. Great Fire of London: History , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 7min
Learn about the Great Fire of London with iMinds insightful audio knowledge series. Before the Great Fire, the City of London was filled with crowded, timber-framed buildings with thin, plaster walls. Candles, rush lights, coals, and fireplaces were omnipresent, and the risk of fire was paramount. The Great Fire of London is believed to have been started by the baker Thomas Farrynger shortly after midnight on Sunday, 2 September 1666, in his shop on Pudding Lane, just East of London Bridge. Within a few hours, the fire had spread rapidly, consuming Pudding Lane, Star Inn at Fish Street Hill and also part of Thames Street. For the next four days the fire raged, mercilessly consuming everything in its wake. Londoners were beside themselves trying to extinguish it. Among average Londoners doing what they could to control the blaze were the likes of the Lord Mayor, the Duke of York, and King Charles II.
