The Invention of Nature by Andrea Wulf | Summary & Analysis Preview: The Invention of Nature by Andrea Wulf is a biography of Alexander von Humboldt, a Prussian naturalist born in 1769. Humboldt had an older brother, Wilhelm. Their father died when they were young, and their mother was emotionally detached from her sons. Alexander and Wilhelm received exacting educations. Alexander became interested in exploration and science, but his mother pressured him to become a civil servant, so he attended a mining academy to become a mine inspector while conducting his own botanical research. He invented new tools for miners, published books on subterranean plants and rocks, and experimented with the effect of electricity on the nervous system. Wilhelm introduced Alexander von Humboldt to Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, the renowned author, and they formed a close friendship based on a mutual interest in the intersection of science and art. Humboldt gained an appreciation for aesthetic perspective from Goethe, and Goethe received the latest in scientific information from Humboldt.... In 1930, dancer and choreographer Martha Graham proclaimed the arrival of "dance as an art of and from America". Dancers such as Doris Humphrey, Ted Shawn, Katherine Dunham, and Helen Tamiris joined Graham in creating a new form of dance, and, like other modernists, they experimented with and argued over their aesthetic innovations, to which they assigned great meaning. Their innovations, however, went beyond aesthetics. While modern dancers devised new ways of moving bodies in accordance with many modernist principles, their artistry was indelibly shaped by their place in society. Modern dance was distinct from other artistic genres in terms of the people it attracted: white women (many of whom were Jewish), gay men, and African American men and women. Women held leading roles in the development of modern dance on stage and off; gay men recast the effeminacy often associated with dance into a hardened, heroic, American athleticism; and African Americans contributed elements of social, African, and Caribbean dance, even as their undervalued role defined the limits of modern dancers' communal visions. Through their art, modern dancers challenged conventional roles and images of gender, sexuality, race, class, and regionalism with a view of American democracy that was confrontational and participatory, authorial and populist. On the 500th anniversary of Luther's rebellion, this spectacular global history traces the revolutionary faith that shaped the modern world. Five hundred years ago, Protestant Christianity began with one stubborn monk. Today it includes a billion people across the globe. The upheaval Martin Luther triggered inspired one of the most creative and destructive movements in human history. Protestants is the story of the men and women who made and remade this quarrelsome faith. Fired by life-changing encounters with their God, they set out for every corner of the world, demanded alarming new freedoms and experimented in new systems of government. Inspired by their newly accessible Bibles, they transformed their inner lives, a transformation that spilled over into social upheavals and political revolutions. In the process they have played decisive roles on both sides of the great ideological battles of modern times. Protestants have been both for and against liberalism, imperialism, slavery, Nazism, communism, apartheid and women's rights. Yet beneath it all is a shared passion for God, a vital belief in the principle of self-determination and a readiness to fight for their beliefs. Protestantism's global story is still only just beginning. As this ever-changing faith puts down deep roots across contemporary China, Africa, and Latin America, Alec Ryrie's dazzling history explores how its restless energy made and is still making the modern world. ungekürzt. Here is a preview: Shortly after I sat down, the waitress stopped by with a carafe and glasses as well as several small tapas that Thomas had already ordered. "Ah, you remember," I smiled and winked. He had ordered red sangria filled with fresh cut fruit, a platter of cheese and olives and cured meats, and a tiny dish of marinated mushrooms. The young woman poured the first glasses and set everything down on the table between Thomas and me. When he and I had been in college, we had experimented making our own sangria and every single attempt failed miserably. I sipped the sparkling fruity drink and popped a mushroom in my mouth. His eyes seemed to watch my every move, and I knew instantly that I could control where this evening ended. "So, are you attached or unattached?" I approached the question head-on. "Um, recently unattached actually." ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Sophia Chambers. Audio sample: https://samples.audible.de/bk/acx0/079648/bk_acx0_079648_sample.mp3. After all, no one ever proved the rumors about her father's gruesome experiments. But when she learns he is alive and continuing his work on a remote tropical island, she is determined to find out if the accusations are true. Accompanied by her father's handsome young assistant, Montgomery, and an enigmatic castaway, Edward - both of whom she is deeply drawn to - Juliet travels to the island, only to discover the depths of her father's madness: He has experimented on animals so that they resemble, speak, and behave as humans. And worse, one of the creatures has turned violent and is killing the island's inhabitants. Torn between horror and scientific curiosity, Juliet knows she must end her father's dangerous experiments and escape her jungle prison before it's too late. The biography of the teacher of the deaf who, through his knowledge of music, human speech, and hearing, invented the telephone. Alexander Graham Bell was a pioneer in many fields that aided communication over distances. He worked tirelessly to help the deaf communicate with others (even Helen Keller came to him for help). After the telephone, Bell invented the photophone (a device that uses a beam of light to transmit sound wirelessly), and developed phonographic sound recording methods. As a spin-off from his work with the telephone, Bell also invented the metal detector. A supporter of man's "Pioneering Spirit", Bell became one of the founders of the National Geographic Society. Bell felt that flight would be an effective way to bring people together. Forming the Aerial Experiment Association and working with a team of aviation pioneers such as Glenn H. Curtiss, Bell's Red Wing was able to make the first public demonstration of powered human flight in North America. Unlike the deadly Wright Flyer, the Red Wing could take-off under its own power without the need of a supplementary catapult, and could make turns safely. One of Bell's aviation inventions, the aileron, is used on all aircraft to this day. Bell also experimented with hydrofoils, culminating in the marine speed record setting HD-4. ungekürzt. NEW AGE The Power of Freedom examines the roles of drugs, alcohol, and promiscuous behavior in American society and shows how America could experience rebirth by rejecting these behaviors. A baby boomer growing up in the 1960s, author Denis Letendre lived life to the fullest, truly embodying the slogan of the times: "Sex, drugs, and rock and roll." For five years after graduating from high school, Letendre experimented with drugs, alcohol, and sex. In The Power of Freedom, he explores those experiences and the lessons learned in the context of energy, power, and freedom. Through this five-year social experiment, Letendre discovered an enormous source of energy and realized a way to institute great change in the United States. The Power of Freedom examines the following topics in detail: Reality and self-created alternate realities Change from within Freedom, the greatest source of energy The source and effects of the energy Historical changes An alternate future with solutions for the human condition The Power of Freedom communicates how both today's world and the future are faced with unprecedented challenges. It shows how the change from within and the rejection of harmful behaviors will have a lasting and positive effect. Our species is facing the greatest threat to civilization. What threat? Arrogance, greed, and artificial intelligence. Freedom is the catalyst to create energy far greater than nuclear, fusion, solar, wind, oil, coal, or gas. We can evolve to a higher life form when we engage our true potential.
