This book makes it easy to create and admire wonderful Japanese-style paintings and portraits!Modern Japanese-style paintings are recognizable by their restrained use of three-dimensionality and perspective, reliance upon expressive lines, and the bold use of color to direct the viewer's eye. There are other ways that artists imbue their work with Japanese- inspired attributes, including through the skillful use of shape, texture, and facial expression.Author Shinichi Fukui introduces readers to 7 notable modern Japanese artists (Kazuo Kawakami, Chiaki Takasugi, Miho Tanaka, Ryohei Nishiyama, Jose Franky, Ryohei Murata, and Keiji Yano) who specialize in shin hanga-style portraiture of Japanese women. He then presents instructions to create 21 different original paintings--from sketching models, preparing and mixing paints, blocking in color, and rendering fine details.Using these techniques, and a bit of acrylic paint, readers will be able to create eye-catching works of art that express a timeless Japanese aesthetic.

By necessity, by proclivity, by delight," Ralph Waldo Emerson said in 1876, "we all quote." But often the phrases that fall most readily from our collective lips - like "fire when ready", "speak softly and carry a big stick", or "nice guys finish last" - are those whose origins and true meanings we have ceased to consider.Restoring three-dimensionality to more than 50 of these American sayings, Tippecanoe and Tyler Too turns clichés back into history by telling the life stories of the words that have served as our most powerful battle cries, rallying points, laments, and inspirations. In individual entries on slogans and catchphrases from the early 17th to the late 20th century, Jan Van Meter reveals that each one is a living, malleable entity that has profoundly shaped and continues to influence our public culture. From John Winthrop's "We shall be as a city upon a hill" and the 1840 Log Cabin Campaign's "Tippecanoe and Tyler Too", to Martin Luther King Jr.'s "I have a dream" and Ronald Reagan's "Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall," each of Van Meter's selections emerges as a memory device for a larger political or cultural story. Taken together in Van Meter's able hands, these famous slogans and catchphrases give voice to our common history, even as we argue about where it should lead us. ungekürzt. Language: English. A brief history of psychology and the sciences as related to field theory. Also includes an article on synesthesia/schizophrenia. "Notes on Albert's Mind, Field Theory and Contextualism"Years passed. Man remained ignorant of man. Psychology was one day, many days, born. Man applied past skills to present whims. Psychology was oriented toward ideas and systems that were additive in nature, these seeming the most secure means of study. Or, was it additive in the sense that cause and effect were just so very apparent and quite so easy to discuss and observe? Is what is easy always right? It is true that many times, the simplest answer is the right answer. However, this very accepted view leads some to feel uneasy and to question the basic concepts as to their dimensionality within the "context" of their own daily life. And then came the behavioral mechanisms: It would see that some precepts in the fledgling pseudoscience, psychology, had not held up very well under not even very intense scrutiny."Synesthesia/Schizophrenia"In past years the study, control, and understanding of schizophrenia has been greatly hampered by lack of information, inappropriate tools (like no computers of sufficient complexity for handling of compilation and dissemination of data), obviously a lack of appropriate software for such research, and perhaps most simply, the incorrect approach. Since we must always reconsider, reevaluate, and redirect our attempts at helping the schizophrenic individual, this paper is directed toward this effort at seeing the schizophrenic person through the "filter" of a "normal" condition such as synesthesia. ungekürzt. The origin of species has fascinated both biologists and the general public since the publication of Darwin's Origin of Species in 1859. Significant progress in understanding the process was achieved in the "modern synthesis," when Theodosius Dobzhansky, Ernst Mayr, and others reconciled Mendelian genetics with Darwin's natural selection. Although evolutionary biologists have developed significant new theory and data about speciation in the years since the modern synthesis, this book represents the first systematic attempt to summarize and generalize what mathematical models tell us about the dynamics of speciation. Fitness Landscapes and the Origin of Species presents both an overview of the forty years of previous theoretical research and the author's new results. Sergey Gavrilets uses a unified framework based on the notion of fitness landscapes introduced by Sewall Wright in 1932, generalizing this notion to explore the consequences of the huge dimensionality of fitness landscapes that correspond to biological systems. In contrast to previous theoretical work, which was based largely on numerical simulations, Gavrilets develops simple mathematical models that allow for analytical investigation and clear interpretation in biological terms. Covering controversial topics, including sympatric speciation and the effects of sexual conflict on speciation, this book builds for the first time a general, quantitative theory for the origin of species.

This book is a collection of short stories. In each of these I wrap an interesting story around a science concept. Because I am as concerned about good internal consistency as I am good story telling, these are stories that are fun because they take different twists from those found in conventional speculative fiction. These stories are different. In one story, "The Failure", two scientists create a new species of life. But it's not a biological species, it's a cyberspecies. And while it's much more powerful and intelligent than humans, it's not going to be either a devil or a god to mankind; it has its own worries and aspirations. The point of the story is that there are many other relations besides evil overlord and loving patriarch between humans and an intelligent successor species. The failure part is because these scientists are seeking a way to increase manufacturing productivity, not create a new species. Ah well... Now they will have to try again. In another story, "Searching for Angels", two scientists labor to summon a 4D being into our 3D plane of existence. The being is one that has been written about in the Bible - an angel! They succeed, but then comes the twist. This story explores how beings of different dimensionality can relate to each other, and it's not easy! In all these stories I take an interesting science or technology concept and then wrap an interesting unconventional story of human motivation around it. If you like thinking about your science fiction, this book is fun! This is Volume Two and it's about stories that take place on earth. Volume One is about stories that take place in space and on distant worlds. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Roger Bourke White Jr..
