Sense Offenders
Eric Hage of the Metroland says of the Sense Offenders: Albany band the Sense Offenders play ballsy, macho rock that is lead by the vocal growl and songwriting sensibilities of the undeniably talented Tom McWatters. 'Razor's Edge' opens up the album with an ominous rumble that builds into a booty shaking, hard rock scrum upheld by the slashing power chords of guitarist Eric Halder and the precision clatter of drummer John Brodeur. But it's McWatters' feral, bluesy howl that truly marks this territory as serious business. 'Loaded with my Love' mixes things up a bit by offering more of a rock&roll, not hard rock, attack that lands somewhere closely in the neighborhood of 1970's Elvis Costello or Rockpile. Mostly though, this album is supreme 'cock rock', finely executed with balls to match. Few people could drop lines like 'it's cold outside so come in soon/join the revival in my bedroom'(from 'Stiff Breeze') and be taken seriously. But McWatters, with that dirty howl and all of that heavy artillery behind him (and some righteous organ), pulls it off quite well. Sure, this is dead serious 'rawk', but one also gets the sense that the Sense Offenders are having a whole lot of fun living it up like Free or Bad Company did back in the day.-Erik Hage, Metroland, Albany NY Our bio: The Sense Offenders are a favorite on the Albany club scene, thanks to the strong soulful vocals of Tom McWatters, and a commitment to performances that leave rooms full of tired, sweaty bodies in their wake. Behind McWatters is a group of sought-after, multitasking musicians: his brother Matt McWatters, a talented songwriter and singer in his own right, on bass, the fiery guitar leads of Eric Halder, who also leads his own classic rock influenced trio, Charmboy, Terry McClain, leader of rock misfits Guiltless Cult, on keys, and John Brodeur, of Maggie Mayday and Helctor on Stilts, on drums. The songs of the Sense Offenders' self titled debut CD range from aggressive chest beaters like 'Razor's Edge' and 'Rebel Anthem' to funk flavored rockers like 'Stiff Breeze' and 'Lord Humongous', with the occasional anthemic ballad 'Dear Mrs Whitman', and Elvis Costello influenced pop tune, 'Loaded with my Love', thrown in for good measure. The Sense Offenders came together in August 2005, and we released our self title debut disc in september 2007. We've since shared the stage with bands like Cracker, Mohair, Super 400, and the Fireflies. You're next. If you can handle the stiff breeze, the Sense Offenders want to give it to you, hard.- Shop: odax

Head Bone Gumbo
With a freshly inked European distribution deal in place with Proper Records, in late 2011, Jude and his wife moved to England to live. Settling on the island just off England's south coast, the Isle of Wight, it wasn't long before Jude was once again writing songs for his next album, a collaboration with old friend, poet Blake Parker. "I met Blake in 1998 and we immediately hit it off and began creatively collaborating together". The two created several screenplays, multimedia shows, films and videos, websites, and a trilogy of poetry/music albums. "We drank lots of wine, laughed loudly, pushed each other forward and best of all, became close friends" reminisces Jude. Blake died of cancer in 2007. In 2011 his partner, Monica, published a book of his song poems - Laughter At My Window. Jude left Canada with a copy in his hands and in the spring of 2012 picked it up and began setting music to Blake's words. The result is Head Bone Gumbo - a mix that Jude calls 'countrybilly blues'. A real musical stew of styles, words, and ideas. "This is the most bluesy I've ever gotten on record, but there is quite a nice cross with country songs and some rockabilly too" says Jude. "After the intensity of the last two albums it was refreshing for me to sit down with someone else's words and just simply have some musical fun. I think this is reflected in the simplicity and upbeat nature of this album. Basically the styles were dictated by Blake's words and images - Blake loved the blues, old country, and back-porch type music, so I think he'd approve of our collaboration on this album" continues Jude. For this album's artwork Jude used photos of street art he had taken while visiting Brussels in April 2012. "There was some fantastic graffiti we stumbled upon in Belgium, really cool stuff, I literally just snapped it with my little camera, and when I came to put the graphics together it just worked perfectly. Strangely enough there were quite a few images of heads in the paintings - which really worked nicely with the 'Head Bone' vibe of the title - which is a piece of lyric from a song called 'Ghetto Head'. The 'gumbo' was added to infer the idea that this album is a spicy mix of styles and vibes if you like".- Shop: odax

New Year's Day
This is my first solo effort .. I wrote 9 of the 10 tunes, and I also play piano, bass, guitar, sax and clarinet, all the instruments except for drums, which are expertly covered by my friend Jeff Crouse. Recording was done on my 16 track, piano and drums together, one session at my house and two at Jeff's. Although I added all the other instruments later, it doesn't sound 'tracked' to Jeff and me. You would expect the interplay between piano and drums, but it feels like it's there with the other instruments as well. Cosmic stuff. Many different musical styles are represented. Funk tune, jazz waltz, slow bluesy swing, fast Latin, ballad, odd time meter boogie, bossa, up swing, blues with a gospel feel, and whatever the heck you call what I did with Norwegian Wood. I'm proud of it. Hope you like it.- Shop: odax

Find Your Sun
Solid Performances, Lyrical Story Telling, Catchy Hooks, Musical Ingenuity, A Rock and Blues Fueled Soul and an Undying Determination for Success. This is how the Andrew Gerardi Band describe themselves. Others have their own opinions: The AGB, or Andrew Gerardi Band as they are formally known have been described by New York City D.J. Ken Dashow as 'the only independant band out there that truly gets it!' -'.....a band I am Definitly keeping my eye on'! - Ken Dashow- Q104.3 FM New York City -'Andrew is a young man who has taken our little section of the world by storm...you only need to hear him once to realize that his love for music and dedication to his art are foremost on his list of priorities. Listening to him is like pulling on that old sweater that you just won't give up. He makes you feel comfortable...he speaks to you as if he knows you, and that is why you listen' - T. Kane -The New York Home Reporter As a band, they have collectively figured out how to sculpt the thoughtful bluesy voice and lyrics of Andrew Gerardi into a style that covers a wide spectrum of Rock Appeal. Instead of playing a simplistic forefront that most 'singer/songwriters' have been molded to, they break out making the sound lyrically moving while musically powerful. They do not deprive the songs of their true potential. The band has recieved crital acclaim for it's sound and determination and has sold out clubs such as NYC's Crash Mansion and The Knitting Factory. They have also performed acoustically at Los Angeles' Hard Rock Cafe. In addition to their musical success, the AGB has been recently given a reality televsion series called 'Andrew Gerardi- The Long Walk Home' that is currently filming it's pilot season.- Shop: odax

Point of Departure
Point of Departure This solo piano recording of my original compositions represent a spectrum of musical experiences. We start off with "A Brother's Journey" that chronicles the crossing of our dear sweet-hearted, courageous soul who initially ventures off into the unknown only to discover himself in the unknowable. From pastoral beginnings to a jazzy resolution "Point of Departure" indeed points to new directions in my musical thinking. I've included one gorgeous composition from one of my piano mentors Warren Bernhardt entitled, "Sarah's Touch" and a couple of joyous bluesy numbers that conclude the recording that remind us all to celebrate even our greatest losses as part of our transcendent human experience.- Shop: odax

20th Anniversay Celebration
20th ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION OF AUSTRALIAN COMPOSERS JADCD 1119 An anthology of works by Australian composers in a wide range of styles and musical groupings ranging from saxophone quartet, mandolin ensemble through, a trio for piccolo, guitar & cello to works for solo mandolin and solo piano. Tracks 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 & 6 - ERIC GROSS (b.1926) SUITE LATIN AMERICAN op.302 (2008) for multi-instrumentalist Saxophone Quartet. The TANGO CONCERTANTE, completed in 2007 received a very enthusiastic reception by the members of the Fo(u)r Fans - Saxophone Quartet to whom this Suite is dedicated. It was therefore decided to create a suite of movements in a Latin American style. The title of each movement indicates the style, mood and rhythmic provenance of the musical content, with the BALADA providing a calm and gentle contrast to the other, livelier movements. Because of the versatility of the instrumentalists for whom the suite has been composed, the composer succumbed to the temptation to provide additional variety of timbre by utilising also instruments other than the various saxophones, which the members of this ensemble play so expertly. Track 1 - Tango Concertante Track 2 - Rumbaphonics Track 3 - Balada Track 4 - Samba This Suite was recorded privately in Weimar, Germany in 2008 and the fifth movement, "Hatdance" will be recorded in due course. The members of the Fo(u)r Fans- Saxophone Quartet are: • Ruediger Trosits-Sopr.Sax/Flute/Bb Clt. • Berndt Klinke-Alto Sax/Sopr.Sax/Flt/Picc./Bb Clt./B'Clt. • Holger Arndt-Ten.Sax/Eb Clt./ B'Clt. • Jens Kaiser-Baritone Sax/Bb Clt. Track 5 - PIANGO CONCERTANTE op.302/A (2008) This is an arrangement and adaption for solo piano of the Tango Concertante op.302/1. Because of the enthusiastic reception given to the tango the composer decided to create this idiomatic arrangement for that great supporter of Australian music, the Australian pianist Sally Mays, utilising her great musicianship and technical prowess to the fullest. This private recording was made in London in August 2008. Sound Engineer Bas Kelleher. Track 6 - PREMARCH AND POSTWAR (VORMÅRZ UND NACHKRIEG) op.307 A brief tone-poem for piano, based upon the poem of the same title by the German poet MICHAEL KIRMES-SEITZ, and gives expression to the disasters and havoc created in Germany by the political events of that period. The music pictures and contrasts the exaggerated and false hopes raised and the inevitable horrendous consequences by the end of World War II. This composition was written especially for the outstanding pianist and pedagogue, Idil Ugur who resides in Weimar where this private recording was made in August 2008. E.G. Track 7 - PETER SCULTHORPE (b.1929) A SUN SONG FOR ERIC (1991) This short piece of music was written by the composer to be included in a GARLAND of pieces written by various composers for Eric Gross on his retirement from Sydney University in 1991. The music is one of Peter Sculthorpe's miniature masterpieces and contains a sunny aspect throughout. Peter Sculthorpe is Australia's most celebrated composer. Track 8 - ANN CARR-BOYD (b.1938) FANDANGO (1982) FANDANGO, written in 1982 for Adrian Hooper and the Sydney Mandolins, is a lyrical bluesy type of work and has proved to be this composer's most popular piece of music along with her MUSIC FOR AN IMAGINARY ITALIAN FILM, also written for Adrian Hooper and the Sydney Mandolins. Track 9 - BETTY BEATH (b.1942) contrasts (1983) This is one of the many miniature masterpieces of Betty Beath's composed in 1983. Played by the composer at the piano. Tracks 10, 11 & 12 - ROBERT ALLWORTH (b.1943) Track 10 - NIGHTFALL ON SYDNEY HARBOUR (2006) This composition describes an impressionistic landscape of Sydney Harbour at dusk. The music ebbs and flows, creating a moody scene. Track 11 - TWILIGHT THOUGHTS (2008) Twilight Thoughts depicts feelings at twilight and is contemplative in character. Track 12 - PRELUDE AMETHYST AND JADE (2008) Prelude Amethyst and Jade describes in harmony and melody the characteristics of these gems. Tracks 10, 11 and 12 recorded 12/9/2008 by Kerry Joyner at 2MBSFM Studio C. Track 13 - RAY LEMOND (b.1956) NORDLAND (2008) The upper part of Norway is known as Nordland and is home to the spectacular Norwegian fjords. The music tries to capture a slice of the majesty and tranquility of this natural wonder. Recorded on Arcadia 24/8/2008 by Matt James. Track 14 - ROBERT ALLWORTH (b.1943) FALLING LEAVES OF RED AND GOLD (2008) FALLING LEAVES OF RED AND GOLD was written for mandolinist MICHAEL HOOPER in July 2008. The music is in three movements and is lyrical and autumnal in character. Michael Hooper graduated as Doctor of Philosophy (Musicology) from York University in July 2008 and recorded this composition at the Rymer Auditorium of the Music Research Centre at the University of York. The recording was produced by Ellen Winhall and remastering was supervised by Adrian Hooper. Track 15 - DEREK STRAHAN (b.1935) AT BONDI-SURF & RIPS (1963) Rondo for Piccolo, Guitar & 'Cello (1963, revised 2008) - Trio Nuovo Musicale New Music Group Players. My home in 1963 was a flat in a crumbling block at the south end of Bondi Beach renting at $8 per week which had a millionaire's view looking north along the surf, and which has since been replaced by expensive apartments. I body-surfed every day, rediscovering a beach life last experienced at age 10 in 1945 in Perth, WA, before being relocated to the UK by my family, from whence I fled in 1962 returning to Australia. This Rondo is one of a dozen or so music works I wrote in that year, and seems to have been a visceral and combative depiction of swimming in the surf in rough conditions, with conflicting currents above and below amid the constant excitement of waves rolling in. I have changed little of the structure and themes of the original score but have added detail to enhance texture, maintain motivic impulse and provide a more climactic Coda. This is the first of three pieces making up a Suite "At Bondi". 'Surf & Rips' heard here, then "Millpond" and "Perfect Day" which follow with the flute taking the woodwind role. Recording, Revolve Pty. Ltd., 28/01/08 This compact disc celebrates the 20th Anniversary of the first compact disc issued on the JADE label through BROAD MUSIC. This compilation represents 20 years of production of Australian music on JADE RECORDS. A special tribute is made to Dr. Eric Gross AM for his encouragement of Australian music during his tenure as Associate professor of Music at the University of Sydney and also as a supporter throughout the 20 years of the JADE series of Australian music. Some of his most engaging music is heard on this disc. The 20th year of production and also the 103rd disc in this series. Compilation mastered by Steve Smart Studios 301. Gravity
Founded in 2008, the high-octane modern jazz group Gravity performs mostly original compositions created for it's unusual instrumentation of two saxophones, bass, and drums. While deeply rooted in the jazz tradition, the band members enjoy a wide scope of musical passions and can be heard digging in to anything from the jazz canon to Led Zeppelin and beyond. Recorded in Brooklyn, New York, Gravity's new CD includes eleven tracks, nine of which were composed by saxophonist Joel Taylor Camp. The album opens with the Monday morning battle charge 'Nemesis'. Savor the poetry and raw emotion of the poignant lyric: "AAAARRRGH!". The mood lightens up with 'Calypso Bob and the Three-Legged Fish' which features a playful melody and infectious beat. A funky, flower child vibe comes forth with 'Environmental Sweep of the Nostalgic Core Mine', a mind-altering extended composition with a spacious, New Age atmosphere at the end. 'Road to Transition' is a thoroughly modern composition with roots in the music of Thelonious Monk and Ornette Coleman. 'Santi' is a beautiful ballad dedicated to Joel's lovely wife. The band pays it's respects again to Monk with 'Innersphere' featuring guest pianist Ralph Pugliese. The tempo heats up with 'L.N.S.C.', a tune with a blistering melody and quite possibly the first hard-bop tenor sax solo ever recorded through a distortion pedal! Evocative of film noire, Bassist Matthew Schneider penned the composition 'Bad Dude on a Good Day' which includes guest musicians Michael Lipsey on conga drum and Paul Schellack on guitar. The band follows up with a hard-swinging, bluesy approach to Cole Porter's 'Love For Sale'. Gravity spontaneously appropriated a blue toy megaphone and ran it through an overdrive effect for the lyric at the end of the opening melody of 'Smack Ya in the Eye'. This was by far one of the best laughs that we enjoyed during the recording session! Despite the antics, this is a tightly composed, deeply-swinging tune with several contrasting sections. The final track 'Positive Energy' sums up the band members feelings about this music as being a positive, healing force for good. This blues tune opens with a ripping bass solo in dialogue with the drums. The horns fly through their improvisations before finally relenting to the the riff-based melody at the end. Musician's Bios: Tenor and soprano saxophonist, composer, and educator Joel Taylor Camp is a rising star in the jazz world. He has performed on Broadway in the musical "Jump" at the Hudson Theater and at festivals throughout the United States and Canada. He has composed over one hundred works for classical and jazz ensembles. Matthew Schneider is one of the most versatile bassists on the New York scene having worked in classical music, jazz, rock, and commercial TV studio recording. A graduate of Oberlin Conservatory, Matthew has served as Principal Bassist with the Knoxville Symphony Orchestra, Knoxville City Opera, Brooklyn Symphony Orchestra, and at several festivals including Aspen, Spoleto, and Cape May. He has also performed at venues throughout the United States including the Blue Note, Merkin Hall, and the Apollo Theater in New York City. Don Torrillo has been playing the tenor and alto Saxophones for 30 years. His inspired improvisations are steeped in the influences of saxophone greats such as Booker Ervin, Frank Foster and Stan Getz. Drummer, author, and educator James Guarnieri studied music at North Texas State University and has performed with a diverse list of artists including the progressive rock group Frogg Café, The Chiffons, The Long Island Jazz Orchestra, and legendary jazz pianist Red Garland.- Shop: odax
