A former professional boxer, actor, horse trainer and radio announcer, Charles Willeford (1919-1988) is best known for his Miami-based crime novels featuring hard-boiled detective Hoke Moseley, including Miami Blues and Sideswipe. His career as a writer began in the late 1940s, but it was his 1972 novel Cockfighter that announced his name to a wider audience. Of that book, Harry Crews said, “Charles Willeford renders the sport with such knowledge and attention to detail that...had the almost inexpressible impression of being on my knees again beside the great fighting pits of the southern circuit.Frank Mansfield is the titular cockfighter: a silent and fiercely contrary man whose obsession with winning will cost him almost everything. Mansfield haunts the cockpits, bars and roads of the rural South in the early 1960s, adrift but always capable of nearly anything. First published in complete form in 1972, and adapted by Willeford for a Monte Hellman film in 1974 (which became infamous for its use of real animals in the fight scenes), the novel Cockfighter has been out of print for nearly 20 years.  ungekürzt. In his second collection of short stories, James Leo Herlihy explores a landscape of people living on the fringes of normal society as the pleasures of daily life fade. Men and women search for the missing fragment of meaning from their existence with Herlihy’s signature humor and deft dialogue.   In the titular story, Mary Ellen McClure is trapped in a dull, unfulfilled life in a trailer park, suspecting her husband of having an affair. Together with her neighbor Ivy, she dabbles with a Ouija board which spells out the name Ezra and implies that Mary Ellen will have an affair. She becomes enamored with the fantasy of this unknown man - at first falling deep into the escapism of the imagined affair, then resolving to find him for real to save her from her stale life.   Herlihy’s other gothic tales tell of Consilada Rector, who can’t get people to believe in the leprechaun that presides over her husband’s bar; Mrs. Dorothy Fitzpatrick, who records of the existence of a ghostly mail delivery truck; and a dying man who comes to stay with a mother and her blessed son William.  ungekürzt. Conceived during a fog-drenched car ride with nothing beyond the windshield but a horizon-less void, Larry Fessenden and Glenn McQuaid created the acclaimed Tales from Beyond the Pale, audio theater inspired by the vintage radio shows of Alfred Hitchcock and Orson Welles. Volume 3 features two episodes from the first season, including "Is This Seat Taken?" by Sarah Langan and "The Grandfather" by Graham Reznick. The series is produced by filmmakers Larry Fessenden, Glenn McQuaid, and Lisa Wisely. In "Is this Seat Taken?", written by Sarah Langan and directed by J.T. Petty, a young man meets an alluring woman on the Long Island Railroad and slowly comes to realize they have a common past... but maybe not the one she is recollecting. This twisted commuter’s tale stars independent filmmaker Joe Swanberg and New York actress Vonia Lania. In "The Grandfather", written and directed by Graham Reznick, a perfectly ordinary grandfather feeds his perfectly ordinary cat, waiting for his perfectly happy family to arrive for a perfectly pleasant afternoon… until an unfortunate revelation puts them all on a tragic path, if the grandfather can’t unravel their perfect mess first. This startling tale stars the venerable Angus Scrimm in the titular role. Language: English. Narrator: Larry Fessenden. One of the most successful songwriters and composers of the last 25 years, Steve Dorff has penned over 20 "Top 10" hits for pop and country artists around the world, including Barbra Streisand, Celine Dion, Blake Shelton, Smokey Robinson, Kenny Rogers, Ray Charles, Anne Murray, Whitney Houston, George Strait, Dolly Parton, Judy Collins, Cher, Dusty Springfield, Ringo Starr, and Garth Brooks. He has scored for television shows, including Growing Pains, Major Dad, Murder She Wrote, Reba, and several films, including Any Which Way but Loose for which he penned the titular song, and more recently, he has embarked on Broadway (forthcoming musical Josephine). Chronicling his four decades behind the music, Steve Dorff gives anecdotes, advice, and insights into his journey. The book follows Steve from his childhood in Queens to Manhattan to Nashville and to his eventual arrival in Los Angeles, California. Oftentimes, songs are attributed to the singers who perform them, but it is the songwriter who really knows the story behind the story, from conception to execution. Full of heartfelt stories, hard-earned wisdom, and delightful wit, I Wrote That One, Too... is a great book for musicians, music fans, and whoever has chased their dreams and survived the surprising, but often serendipitous, turns in the road. ungekürzt. Long Way to Texas brings together three rare Kelton novels, all with Texas roots.  In Joe Pepper, the titular character, while awaiting a hangman's noose, tells the story of how he discovered a propensity for violence while seeking revenge. The irony is that Joe's keen sense of justice puts him on the wrong side of the law.  Long Way to Texas, taking place just after the Civil War battle of Glorieta Pass in New Mexico, is the story of Lt. David Buckalew, whose remnant of Confederate riflemen is under siege and low on rations and water. Complicating matters is the young officer's self-doubt and fear of failure.  Thomas Canfield of Eyes of the Hawk, known to the Mexican citizens of his town of Stonehill, Texas, as "El Gavilan" - the Hawk - is not a man to forgive a wrong. He sets out to prove this to an insolent ranch man rival who intends to build a fortune at Canfield's expense. The Hawk has a radically different idea: He will destroy the town before yielding to his enemy.  This omnibus edition of three novels by Elmer Kelton features an introduction by Dale L. Walker, author of 23 novels and a past president of the Western Writers of America. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Pete Bradbury. From an important new American writer comes this powerful collection of personal essays on fear, creativity, art, faith, academia, the Internet, and justice. In this poignant and inciting collection of literary essays, Megan Stielstra tells stories to ward off fears both personal and universal as she grapples toward a better way to live. In her titular piece, "The Wrong Way to Save Your Life", she answers the question of what has value in our lives - a question no longer rhetorical when the apartment above her family's goes up in flames. "Here Is My Heart" sheds light on Megan's close relationship with her father, whose continued insistence on climbing mountains despite a series of heart attacks leads the author to dissect deer hearts in a poetic attempt to interrogate her own feelings about mortality. Whether she's imagining the implications of open-carry laws on college campuses, recounting the story of going underwater on the mortgage of her first home, or revealing the unexpected pains and joys of marriage and motherhood, Stielstra's work informs, impels, enlightens, and embraces us all. The result is something beautiful - this story and her courage, and, potentially, our own. Intellectually fierce and viscerally intimate, Megan Stielstra's voice is witty, wise, warm, and above all achingly human. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Megan Stielstra, Meredith Mitchell. Best known for his sweeping international and political fiction narratives - including The Woman Who Lost Her Soul, which won the Dayton Peace Prize and was finalist for the Pulitzer Prize - Bob Shacochis began his writing career as a pioneering journalist and contributing editor for Outside Magazine and Harper's. Kingdoms in the Air brings together the very best of Shacochis's culture and travel essays in one livewire collection that spans his global adventures and his life passions; from surfing, to his obsession with the South American dorado, to the time he went bushwhacking in Mozambique. In the titular essay "Kingdoms", the longest work in the collection, Shacochis ventures to Nepal with his friend, the photographer Thomas Laird, who was the first foreigner to live in Nepal's kingdom of Mustang as the forbidden Shangri-la prepared to open its borders to trekkers and trade. When the two men return a decade after Laird first lived there, Shacochis observes in brilliantly evocative prose both the current cultural and political landscape of the country and the changes that his friend has to reconcile with. Replete with Shacochis's signature swagger, humor, and crystalline wisdom, Kingdoms in the Air is a majestic and essential collection from one of our most important writers. ungekürzt.
