The definitive, shocking account of the FIFA scandal - the biggest international corruption case of recent years, spearheaded by US investigators, involving dozens of countries, and implicating nearly every aspect of the world’s most popular sport, soccer, including its biggest event, the World Cup. The FIFA case began small, boosted by an IRS agent’s review of an American soccer official’s tax returns. But that humble investigation eventually led to a huge worldwide corruption scandal that crossed continents and reached the highest levels of the soccer’s world governing body in Switzerland. In Red Card, Ken Bensinger explores the case, and the personalities behind it, in vivid detail. There’s Chuck Blazer, a high-living soccer dad who ascended to the highest ranks of the sport while creaming millions from its coffers; Jack Warner, a Trinidadian soccer official whose lust for power was matched only by his boundless greed; and the sport’s most powerful man, FIFA president Sepp Blatter, who held on to his position at any cost even as soccer rotted from the inside out. Remarkably, this corruption existed for decades before American law enforcement officials began to secretly dig, finally revealing that nearly every aspect of the planet’s favorite sport was corrupted by bribes, kickbacks, fraud, and money laundering. Not even the World Cup, the most-watched sporting event in history, was safe from the thick web of corruption, as powerful FIFA officials extracted their bribes at every turn. Arriving just in time for the 2018 World Cup, Red Card goes beyond the headlines to bring the real story to light, accompanying the determined American prosecutors and special agents who uncovered what proved to be not only the biggest scandal in sports history but one of the biggest international corruption cases ever. And it is far from over. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Jonathan Todd Ross. Audio sample: https://samples.audible.de/bk/sans/008757/bk_sans_008757_sample.mp3. Digital audiobook in aax.

2036: The Year Trump Stepped Down is the hilarious and quirky futuristic story of America after enduring 20 years with Donald TXXXP and his family running the show. The good news is, you’ll never have to read the TXXXP name since this book redacts it every time (but this is the audiobook, so maybe there is no good news - you'll just have to listen to find out). The bad news is, the country is a catastrophic mess, a barren wasteland similar to the Old West, except now both coasts, East and West, are completely gone! America in 2036 is a place where only two types of people exist: the have-nots and the rich. The have-nots must gut it out every day in the dangerous outdoors (suffering other-worldly and disastrous weather patterns along with the better-than-likely chance of getting shot for any reason at all). The rich reside in the 10 domed capital cities, all of them able to withstand any weather catastrophe from the outside world, and they receive every penny of the Administration’s coffers to support their own homes, these 10 examples of human ingenuity, these 10-mile-wide luxury domes called the capital cities. In the novella, an array of six different groups of people from every walk of life in 2036 America strive to survive the frequent world-shaking events of the day, and all the while desperately trying to figure out what happened to the entire Southern Hemisphere (which, rumor has it, is missing). To uncover the answers, the book takes its listener into the jaw-dropping, comical, and satirical world of the TXXXP “Regime” (as they’re now called), including the nonrepentant KellyaXXX CXXXXY and the sociopathic Stephen MXXXER amongst others. In short, the world has become a ludicrous wasteland only 16 years from our present day. 2036: The Year Trump Stepped Down is a fun, often-deep, and oft-hilarious pause-resister (which can be consumed easily in one day at the beach) (without the kids) that takes its listener into the heart of a ungekürzt. The Roman Republic’s development from a city state into a world power that controlled large swathes of modern Italy, Gaul, and Spain, as well as other parts of Europe is seen by many as being the direct result of Roman fear of the “Celtic Threat.” The sacking of Rome by the Gauls in 386 BC became indelibly imprinted into the Roman psyche, and with this fear came a desire to put as much distance as possible between the city of Rome and any potential enemy. The result was the gradual acquisition of buffer zones that became provinces of an empire that grew without any particular thought out or deliberate strategy of expansion. The Gallic Wars, the series of campaigns waged by Julius Caesar on behalf of the Roman Senate between 58-50 BC, were among the defining conflicts of the Roman era. Not only was the expansion of the Republic’s domains unprecedented (especially when considering it was undertaken under the auspices of a single general), it had a profound cultural impact on Rome itself as well. The Roman Republic, so dynamic in the wake of the destruction of their ancient enemy, Carthage, had recently suffered a series of dramatic upheavals; from the great slave rebellion of Spartacus to the brutal and bloody struggle for power of Marius and Sulla. Rome had been shaken to its very core, and a victory was essential both to replenish the dwindling national coffers and to instill in the people a sense of civic pride and a certainty in the supremacy of the Republic. Quite simply, in terms of scale, the Gallic Wars were unmatched by anything the Roman Republic had witnessed since the Punic Wars. By the end of the campaigns, ancient historians estimated that more than a million people had died, and still more were displaced or enslaved. Even by the more conservative estimates of modern historians, a casualty count in the hundreds of thousands appears possible. Either way, the war was a cataclysm, involving tens of thousands of combatants, and it also marke ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Colin Fluxman. Todd Gleason, the charming and dimpled con man who last appeared in Two Todd Tales, returns for the first time in more years than he’s willing to admit. The author, too. In these two novellas, cons abound and suspicion reigns. It’s crime fiction...with a laugh track. In "The Mystery of Marilyn and Her Men", Marilyn Mackenzie is an old friend who has just lost her fifth husband. Lost, as in died. And yes, her fifth. Poor Hank Dilfer got bashed over the head by a deer foot, the latest of Marilyn’s matches to meet an early end.Don’t worry about her, she’s fine, living a life higher than her Manhattan penthouse, her bank accounts filled with the spoils from her spouses. Her heart, like always, is ready to move on, and see, that’s where Todd enters the picture. He’s never one to miss an opportunity for a cool con that could fill his coffers. An unexpected financial windfall could come Todd’s way if he’s able to prove Marilyn’s innocence of Hank’s murder. Too bad he thinks she’s guilty as hell.Is Marilyn a black widow, or is something more nefarious afoot? Then, in "The Business with the Bumbling Blind Man", it’s a perfect autumn day that finds Todd Gleason strolling through Central Park when he eyes something odd - an elderly man stumbling forward into a pond.First on the scene, Todd rescues him, only to learn he is blind and had lost his footing. Or, maybe not. Soon, Bartholomew Vasgersian proposes a big payday for Todd: come to his estate and find out which of his relatives is trying to kill him before he inherits a fortune.Todd agrees, but he’s about to meet his match with an assortment of Vasgersian relatives that are loonier than the next. Turns out, one of them jumped off the turret at the estate just two weeks ago. How does that tie in with the threat Barth feels? Is Todd seeing all he thinks, or is he flying blind? ungekürzt. Not so long ago, in the tiny, isolated villages of Finland, where prolonged summer days gave way to endless winter nights, people would pass the time by singing the many adventures of their favorite heroes: the mighty, magical men and women of ancient days. They sang of old Vainamoinen, greatest of sages and magicians, who helped create the world but never could find a woman to wed him. They sang of his friend and ally Ilmarinen, first among craftsmen, the blacksmith who forged the dome of the heavens. They sang of Louhi, the ancient lady of Northland, whose crafty wit and magical powers made her a worthy opponent for Vainamoinen himself. And they sang of Aila, Louhi's lovely daughter, who captured the hopes of the two old friends and drew them as rivals to the shores of Northland. And while these songs could still be heard, there came along a rural doctor, a scholar, who gathered and wove them together in a book he called the Kalevala. And so he created for Finns a national epic, and for the rest of the world, a work of wonder. The songs endure, the heroes live. . . . For ages 10 and up. Cried Joukahainen, "Reverse your words, undo your spells! I will give you a hat full of silver, a helmet full of gold." "Keep your wealth," said Vainamoinen. "My coffers overflow." He chanted again, and Joukahainen sank to his chest. "Reverse your words, undo your spells! I will give you fields for plowing, meadows for pasture." "Keep your land. My farm stretches beyond sight." He chanted again, and Joukahainen sank to his chin. "Reverse your words, undo your spells! I will tell you of the fairest woman, the finest maiden." Vainamoinen stopped his chant.

The game of basketball has gone global and is now the world's fastest-growing sport. Talented players from Europe, Asia, South America, and Africa are literally crashing the borders as the level of their game now often equals that of the American pros, who no longer are sure winners in international competition and who must compete with foreign players for coveted spots on NBA rosters. Yet that refreshing world outlook stands in stark contrast to the game's troubled image here at home. The concept of team play in the NBA has declined as, in the aftermath of the Michael Jordan phenomenon, the league's marketers and television promoters have placed a premium on hyping individual stars instead of teams, and the players have come to see that big-buck contracts and endorsements come to those who selfishly demand the spotlight for themselves. Even worse, relations between players and fans are at a low ebb. Players are perceived to be overpaid, ill-behaved, and arrogant. Fans, paying hundreds of dollars for tickets, often act boorishly and tauntingly. This tension boiled over on the night of November 19, 2004, at the Palace of Auburn Hills, Michigan, during a Detroit Pistons-Indiana Pacers game, when players brawled with fans as much as each other in what was, in fact, a racial skirmish. When the Pacer players entered the stands throwing punches, they had truly smashed an altogether different kind of border. In the aftermath of that sorry spectacle, regular-season television ratings declined for NBA games. Playoff-game ratings plummeted. Sales in NBA-licensing products sagged by a reported 30 percent. For the millions of Americans who cherish basketball, the love affair has reached a state of crisis. Few people care as deeply and know as much about basketball as Harvey Araton, the highly literate and well-traveled sports columnist for The New York Times. For many a season, Araton has observed "the ballers," as the players call themselves, at college tournaments, the NBA, and the Olympics. He has enjoyed a pressbox seat while watching the great 1980s rivalries of Magic Johnson and Larry Bird, the transcendent career of Michael Jordan, and the slow unraveling of the game through the 1990s until the present season, as newly arrived players and league officials misunderstood and misapplied the mixed lessons of Jordan's legacy. Calling on his many years of watching games, of locker-room interviews, of world-hopping reportage, Araton takes us to scenes of vivid play on the court and to off-camera dramas as well. In this taut, simmering book, the author points his finger at the greed and exploitation that has weakened the American game. And with uncommon journalistic courage, he opens a discussion on the volatile, undiscussed subject that lies at the heart of basketball's crisis: race. It begins, he argues, at the college level, where, too often, undereducated, inner-city talents are expected to perform for the benefit of affluent white crowds and to fill the coffers of their respective schools in what Araton calls a kind of "modern-day minstrel show." It continues at the pro level, where marketers have determined that "gangsta" imagery provides for a livelier entertainment package, never mind the effect it has on the quality of team play. And where, moreover, players themselves, often both street smart and immature, decide to live up to the thuggish stereotypes.
