Alles begann 1997 mit der Vision, die besten Terroirs Chiles und die Bordelaiser Weinkultur zu einem Wein der Spitzenklasse zu vermählen. Dafür gründete man das Weingut Viña Almaviva im Maipo Valley. Der Name spielt auf den schürzenjagenden Grafen Almaviva aus Beaumarchais’ »Hochzeit des Figaro« an, der Mozart zu seiner berühmten Oper inspirierte. Als Markensymbol wählte man den „Kultrun“, ein Kultzeichen der chilenischen Mapuche-Indianer. Der im Stile eines Pauillac erzeugte Wein ist eine treffliche Komposition aus überwiegend Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc und Carmenère. Alle Trauben werden von Hand in kleine Kistchen geerntet, sofort in die Kellerei gebracht und bei kontrollierten Tempe-raturen vergoren. Der junge Wein ruht an die 40 Tage auf der Maische, um den Beerenhäuten ein Maximum an saftigen Aromen und Tanninen zu entziehen. Danach wird er zur Reife für 18 Monate in französische Barriques gelegt.
