Planchette , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 14min
During the 1800's the "Planchette" was a popular game in the parlor which consisted of a board of wood with a pencil attached and two wheels. Then the curious players would place the tips of their fingers on the board of wood and if they were lucky the spirits would guide the movement of hands creating words on the paper directly underneath the board. Karen Viselli and John Deadman were curious about the Legend of the Talbot family's misfortune surrounding the game Planchette that became a family tradition on stormy nights. But their family tradition was about to take a tragic turn for the worse that would cause each family member to have to pay with their own lives for conjuring up a demonic presence. Karen and John were both determined to find the Planchette game that was used at the Talbot's Mansion but no one has ever been able to find where the game may have been hidden all of those years. Legend has it that after the last Talbot family member died one of the servant's at the Talbot Castle either tried to destroy the game by tossing it into the fireplace or hid it somewhere in the mansion or in the family crypt. The most bizarre thing is that each family member's body was drained of blood and their eyes were missing. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Ted Brooks. Wrapped in Red: Colors of Scandal, Book 4 , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 302min
Sometimes long-held secrets are the very things that will eventually lead to freedom. Lady Amelia Jane Coventry-Smythe wants nothing more than to shut herself away to mourn in private all the people she lost from her life over the years. Unfortunately, peace is not hers, for the one man she never hoped to see again has just landed in her parlor by mysterious circumstances, with an invitation to her Christmastide house party in hand...and her addiction to him flares anew. Cornelius Matthew Edgerton, Marquess of Winchester, is perplexed thanks to the arrival of holiday invitation. He hasn’t heard from Lady Amelia in 13 years...not since he abruptly left her bed during an affair that he never forgot. Encouraged to attend by her cousin - his best friend - when he arrives at the manor house, his reception is decidedly cool, even though the heat between him and the lady still lingers. Underlying polite public interactions, desire builds and explodes into frantic need, but while the two of them draw closer in new understanding and friendship, danger threatens both of their lives. As Christmas morning arrives, emotions boil over to sour the blooming romance. Only a miracle - and perhaps forgiveness - can help them find the happily ever after they never had the first time around. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Isobel Smith. Speaking with the Dead in Early America : Early American Studies , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 847min
In Speaking with the Dead in Early America, historian Erik R. Seeman undertakes a 300-year history of Protestant communication with the dead. Seeman chronicles the story of Protestants' relationships with the deceased from Elizabethan England to puritan New England and then on through the American Enlightenment into the middle of the nineteenth century with the explosion of interest in Spiritualism. He brings together a wide range of sources to uncover the beliefs and practices of both ordinary people, especially women, and religious leaders. This prodigious research reveals how sermons, elegies, and epitaphs portrayed the dead as speaking or being spoken to, how ghost stories and Gothic fiction depicted a permeable boundary between this world and the next, and how parlor songs and funeral hymns encouraged singers to imagine communication with the dead. Speaking with the Dead in Early America thus boldly reinterprets Protestantism as a religion in which the dead played a central role. The book is published by University of Pennsylvania Press. The audiobook is published by University Press Audiobooks."Meticulously researched and highly readable…" (Ann Braude, author of Radical Spirits)"Deeply researched, compellingly written, and entirely persuasive." (Douglas L. Winiarski, University of Richmond)"A bold and provocative new reading of the Protestant relationship with the dead." (Susan Juster, author of Sacred Violence in Early America) ungekürzt. The Highbury Murders: A Mystery Set in the Village of Jane Austen's Emma , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 472min
EXCERPT: The death of Mrs. Bates, a very old lady whose hearing had long since gone and who had spent her last few months either in her bedroom or sitting in her chair in the parlor, would have gone unremarked in London, where people spent their time discussing fashion, nobility, and the latest offering at the theatre. In Bath, her decease might have been mentioned as a piece of dull news, before the residents and visitors resumed discussing who had been seen at the Pump Room during the day or who was giving a whist party that night. In Highbury, however, Mrs. Bates’s passing was an event which was talked over in every house, both great and small. Jane Austen's Emma has been described as a detective story without a body - except for those who read carefully, there actually is a body, and the potential for an excellent mystery story. Set about a year after Emma closes, The Highbury Murders pays homage to the wit of Jane Austen and the whodunits of Agatha Christie. You do not need to have read Jane Austen's books to enjoy this novel, but if you have - if you regret that she wrote only six - The Highbury Murders is a welcome extension to her world. Pour yourself a cup of tea, settle somewhere comfortable, and indulge yourself with the proverbial good read. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Erin Evans-Walker. Temperance Brennan, forensic anthropologist for both North Carolina and Quebec, has come from Charlotte to Montreal during the bleak days of December to testify as an expert witness at a murder trial. If she's right, Claudel has three recent murders on his hands. Definitely his case. Detective Andrew Ryan is acting mysteriously. The Word Is Murder: A Novel , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 542min
The New York Times best-selling author of Magpie Murders and Moriarty brilliantly reinvents the classic crime novel once again with this clever and inventive mystery starring a fictional version of the author himself as the Watson to a modern-day Holmes, investigating a case involving buried secrets, murder, and a trail of bloody clues. A woman crosses a London street. It is just after 11 a.m. on a bright spring morning, and she is going into a funeral parlor to plan her own service. Six hours later the woman is dead, strangled with a crimson curtain cord in her own home. Enter disgraced police detective Daniel Hawthorne, a brilliant, eccentric man as quick with an insult as he is to crack a case. And Hawthorne has a partner, the celebrated novelist Anthony Horowitz, curious about the case and looking for new material. As brusque, impatient, and annoying as Hawthorne can be, Horowitz - a seasoned hand when it comes to crime stories - suspects the detective may be on to something, and is irresistibly drawn into the mystery. But as the case unfolds, Horowitz realizes he’s at the center of a story he can’t control...and that his brilliant partner may be hiding dark and mysterious secrets of his own. A masterful and tricky mystery which plays games at many levels, The Word Is Murder is Anthony Horowitz at his very best. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Rory Kinnear. Tonic , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 606min
Joel Anderson doesn't take anything seriously. Not his relationships, which have been few and far between since his brutal divorce. Not the drama of working in a tattoo parlor, which seems to be around every corner. When things get him down, he smiles and cracks a joke. But he's not the kind of man you cross, or you'll find yourself at the wrong end of his fists. Annika Belousov takes everything seriously. Like her job as a reality television producer, given that she typically has something to prove. Or her love life, which is defined by a series of requirements - affluent, ambitious, accomplished, to name a few. Definitely her family, who worked their whole lives to afford her every opportunity, a sacrifice she doesn't take lightly. When she's tapped to produce a reality show at Joel's shop, she doesn't think twice, just goes in for the kill, as if there were any other way. The second Annika walks into Joel's shop, he makes it his mission to crack her open, but she's not having it. He's all wrong - too crass, too hairy, too un-serious. But it doesn't take her long to find out there's more to him than smirks and tattoos. And what she finds could put her career and his heart on the line. Not that Joel cares. Because for the first time in a long time, he's found his tonic. A standalone romantic comedy. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Jason Clarke, Kirsten Leigh.
