The Aristocracy of Talent
THE TIMES BOOK OF THE YEAR'This unique and fascinating history explains why the blame now being piled upon meritocracy for many social ills is misplaced-and that assigning responsibilities to the people best able to discharge them really is better than the time-honoured customs of corruption, patronage, nepotism and hereditary castes. Wooldridge upends many common assumptions and provides an indispensable back story to this fraught and pressing issue.' Steven Pinker'The Aristocracy of Talent provides an important and needed corrective to contemporary critiques of meritocracy. It puts meritocracy in an illuminating historical and cross-cultural perspective that shows how crucial the judgment of people by their talents rather than their bloodlines or connections has been to creating the modern world. Highly recommended' Francis Fukuyama*Shortlisted for the 2021 Financial Times and McKinsey & Company Business Book of the Year Award*Meritocracy: the idea that people should be advanced according to their talents rather than their status at birth. For much of history this was a revolutionary thought, but by the end of the twentieth century it had become the world's ruling ideology. How did this happen, and why is meritocracy now under attack from both right and left? Adrian Wooldridge traces the history of meritocracy forged by the politicians and officials who introduced the revolutionary principle of open competition, the psychologists who devised methods for measuring natural mental abilities and the educationalists who built ladders of educational opportunity. He looks outside western cultures and shows what transformative effects it has had everywhere it has been adopted, especially once women were brought into the meritocractic system.Wooldridge also shows how meritocracy has now become corrupted and argues that the recent stalling of social mobility is the result of failure to complete the meritocratic revolution. Rather than abandoning meritocracy, he says, we should call for its renewal.- Shop: buecher

The Ballad of Reading Gaol , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 33min
Between 1895 and 1897 Oscar Wilde served a prison sentence for offences "of gross indecency". Most of this time was spent at Reading Gaol, where Wilde encountered another prisoner, Harles Thomas Wooldridge, a trooper in the Royal Horse Guards, who had been sentenced to death for the murder of his wife. Wooldrige was hanged at the gaol on 7th July, 1896. Wilde wrote the poem in France in 1897 after his release from prison. The first published version identified the author only as C.3.3, the name allocated to Wilde as a prisoner. The poem is a long reflection on the inequity and ineffectiveness of statutory punishment and the redeeming power of the Christian message of forgiveness. In his foreword, Frank Harris wrote: I venture to repeat here what I have said in various ways for nearly twenty years now, that Oscar Wilde's condemnation of prisons and punishment must lead directly to their abolition. The old bad past will die and Oscar Wilde's ballad helped to kill it. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Denis Daly. Ghosts of the Unremembered Past , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 305min
Ghosts of the Unremembered Past is a suspenseful story of a young boy growing up in a family shaped by intrusion, loss, and tragedy and of that same boy, as a young adult, seeking help from a gifted psychoanalyst. The juxtaposition of the protagonist's childhood and early adulthood highlights the crippling effects of emotional isolation and the transformative power of relational connection. It is, above all, a story of hope, though sobered by recognition of the inevitability of the pain and loss that accompanies the process of remembering the past so that its ghosts may be finally laid to rest. Ghosts of the Unremembered Past is a slim volume that reveals many surprises. Tom Wooldridge, in this compelling family drama, conveys some of the most profound psychological struggles we experience as we try to negotiate childhood, adolescence, and adulthood.Using simple, convincing language, he draws the listener into experiences of trauma, tragic losses, confusion, and the thoughtfulness and kindness needed to face and begin healing these pains.About the author: Tom Woolridge is a psychoanalyst, board-certified psychologist, and associate professor of psychology at Golden Gate University. He is also faculty at the Psychoanalytic Institute of Northern California, the Northern California Society for Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy, and an assistant clinical professor at the University of California, San Francisco's Medical School. He has published numerous journal articles and two books. This is his first novel.Praise for the book:"A remarkable first novel."
