The Altar of the Dead was first published in the collection Terminations in 1895. It is a fable of life and death significance which explores what happens when a man tries to keep the remembrance of his dead friends, to save them from being forgotten entirely in the rush of everyday events. He meets a woman who shares his ideals, only to find that the past places what seems to be an impassable barrier between them. Although James was not a religious man, at least in the conventional sense, this story shows a deep spirituality in its treatment of mortality and the transcendent power of unselfish love. Critics have generally rated this tale very high among James' works, with some calling it a "glorious fable," "magnificently written," and "one of his finest." James himself proudly placed the story at the head of volume 17 of the New York Edition (1907 - 09) of his fiction, before even "The Beast in the Jungle". The tale also appeared in a number of later anthologies. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Jim Killavey. Audio sample: https://samples.audible.de/bk/jimc/000397/bk_jimc_000397_sample.mp3. General George C. Marshall, chief of staff of the US Army during World War II, faced the daunting task not only of overseeing two theaters of a global conflict but also of selecting the best generals to carry out American grand strategy. Marshall and His Generals is the first and only book to focus entirely on that selection process and the performances, both stellar and disappointing, that followed from it. Stephen Taaffe explores how and why Marshall selected the Army's commanders. Among Marshall's chief criteria were character (including "unselfish and devoted purpose"), education (whether at West Point, Fort Leavenworth, or the Army War College), and striking a balance between experience and relative youth in a war that required both wisdom and great physical stamina. As the war unfolded, Marshall also factored into his calculations the combat leadership his generals demonstrated and the opinions of his theater commanders. Delving deeper than other studies, this path-breaking work produces a seamless analysis of Marshall's selection process of operational-level commanders. Taaffe also critiques the performance of these generals during the war and reveals the extent to which their actions served as stepping stones to advancement. ungekürzt. Language: English. Her life has been wonderfully fictionalized on the hit PBS TV series, Mercy Street. Here is Mary Phinney's real life in her own words, long prized by historians as a source about Civil War medicine.American Mary Phinney was ahead of her time. A rebel against the restrictions placed on women of her day, the sad death of her husband, the Barron von Olnhausen, proved to be the real beginning of her life.Upon the outbreak of the American Civil War, this remarkable woman enlisted herself in the care of sick and wounded soldiers. Working with Dorothea Dix and other notable women of the Civil War, she tirelessly worked to improve the sanitary conditions, medical care, and morale of shattered young men.Hardly taking a breath from her exhausting years in the Civil War, she went to Europe in 1870 to provide the same services in the Franco-Prussian War. Her experiences as related through her own writing is the story of one of the great women of the 19th century.Mary Phinney von Olnhausen early found her happiness in living, in suffering, in encountering hardships for the sake of others. She was too human to be a saint, of too intense a vitality to be thoroughly well balanced; but she was what the world most needs, - an unflagging, unselfish, optimistic moral force. ungekürzt. The books of Ezra and Nehemiah (and Esther) cover about 100 years, closing the Old Testament historical books. The books of Samuel, Kings, and Chronicles closed with the Southern Kingdom (Judah)'s going into captivity. The two post-exile books of Ezra and Nehemiah record the return from Babylon after its fall to the Persians under Cyrus, the rebuilding of the temple and Jerusalem, and the reestablishment of the national life of Israel.  This study contains eight hours of verse-by-verse teachings.      Ezra 1-3 - Decree of Cyrus permits Jews to return to Jerusalem to rebuild the temple; the altar is set up and sacrifice restored; the foundations of the temple are laid.     Ezra 4-7 - Nehemiahs unselfish example; the rebuilding is opposed; the temple is completed; Ezra is introduced.     Ezra 8-10 - Ezra sends for the Levites and Nethinim; Ezra proclaims a fast for the Lord's protection; God's people fail to separate from surrounding nations; reconciliation to God through confession and separation.     Nehemiah 1-2 - Nehemiah prays for Israel and makes his request of King Artaxerxes.     Nehemiah 3-5 - The rebuilding begins. A defense against a conspiracy: poverty and famine.     Nehemiah 6-8 - False rumors about Nehemiah; walls finished; a list of those who returned; the law is read.     Nehemiah 9-11 - Ezra's prayer; the covenant signed; the repopulation of Jerusalem.     Nehemiah 12-13 - Establishment of priests and Levites; dedication of the city walls; Nehemiahs reforms. ungekürzt.
