The Sacrament of Happy: What a Smiling God Brings to a Wounded World , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 230min
Imagine hearing your physician tell you that chips and queso contain more nutritional benefits than kale and quinoa. Or opening an envelope that looks like just another bill, and unfolding instead an official document declaring you the sole beneficiary of an anonymous billionaire's estate. In her new book, The Sacrament of Happy, Lisa Harper unveils a similarly extravagant, unexpected surprise, declaring that happiness - just plain feeling happy - is a gift from God that you can unashamedly enjoy. Wearing the twin hats of seminarian and belly-laughing adoptive mom, Harper delivers a warm, vignette style built upon solid theological scaffolding. She observes, for example, that God's choice of wording for the first verse of the first psalm (a word often translated as "blessed") literally means happy - one of many biblical reasons for dismantling the old-school idea that joy, not happiness, is the truly spiritual one of the Christian family. In truth, they're more like fraternal twins than distant cousins, meaning we as Christ-followers are not called to jettison happiness - like a no-longer-needed set of spiritual floaties - as we learn to swim in the deep waters of intimacy with God. Beyond merely a circumstances-based, up-and-down emotion, happiness comes from a deep conviction in the unmitigated goodness of our Creator-Redeemer, freeing us to feel and express genuine joy, fulfillment, and contentment, regardless of personal or global tumult. The author's personal story includes such happiness killers as sexual abuse, the deaths of near loved ones, a heartbreaking failed adoption, followed by the arrival of an adopted daughter from Haiti who is HIV-positive. Yet she writes on themes like: The lost sacrament of laughter Does happy have a personality type? Tuning out the Pharisees who try to mute your happiness in the context of spiritual maturity So this is obviou ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Lisa Harper. Me, Myself, and Us: The Science of Personality and the Art of Well-Being , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 528min
In the past few decades, personality psychology has made considerable progress in raising new questions about human nature - and providing some provocative answers. New scientific research has transformed old ideas about personality based on the theories of Freud, Jung, and the humanistic psychologies of the 1690s, which gave rise to the simplistic categorizations of the Meyer-Briggs Inventory and the "enneagream." But the general public still knows little about the new science and what it reveals about who we are. In Me, Myself, and Us, Brian Little, Ph.D., one of the psychologists who helped re-shape the field, provides the first in-depth exploration of the new personality science and its provocative findings for general readers. The audiobook explores questions that are rooted in the origins of human consciousness but are as commonplace as yesterday's breakfast conversation. Are our first impressions of other people's personalities usually fallacious? Are creative individuals essentially maladjusted? Are our personality traits, as William James put it, "set like plaster" by the age of 30? Is a belief that we are in control of our lives an unmitigated good? Do our singular personalities comprise one unified self or a confederacy of selves, and if the latter, which of our mini-mes do we offer up in marriage or mergers? Are some individuals genetically hard-wired for happiness? Which is the more viable path toward human flourishing, the pursuit of happiness or the happiness of pursuit? Little provides a resource for answering such questions, and a framework through which readers can explore the personal implications of the new science of personality. Questionnaires and interactive assessments throughout the audiobook facilitate self-exploration, and clarify some of the stranger aspects of our own conduct and that of others. Brian Little helps us see ourselves, and other selves, as somewhat less perplexing and definitely more intriguing ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Patrick Lawlor. Pacioli's Gift or Bernanke's Curse?: Why What We Use as Money Matters, Book 5 , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 65min
In response to what has become known as the financial crisis of 2008, the central bankers of the world have employed nearly every form of monetary alchemy at their disposal in a desperate attempt to maintain the status quo. The status quo, which in this case means that all commercial banks and sovereign governments remain both liquid and solvent, has become increasingly difficult to maintain, as each attempt to stimulate economic growth via ultra-low discount rates and quantitative easing has seen a diminishing marginal return in terms of economic growth. The longer the central banks of the world engage in these and other forms of financial alchemy, which in the end serve as futile attempts to defy immutable natural laws, the greater the danger of a complete economic collapse becomes. The unconventional measures employed by the central bankers of the world over the past five years are not only failing to achieve their stated goals of increasing employment and economic growth; they are triggering what is quickly becoming an unmitigated disaster in fixed-income markets. These markets, once the bedrock of global finance, have now been conditioned, in the Pavlovian sense, to do nothing more than attempt to front run the actions of the Federal Reserve and other central banks up and down the yield curve. As the chaos continues to unfold, it is important to examine and understand how humanity has arrived at this critical juncture in history. It is the aim of this volume to answer this question by exploring two of the oft-overlooked elements that have, each in its own way, given rise to the system that enables a relatively small group of persons the ability to destroy the accumulated wealth of mankind's 9,000 years of toil in just over 100. These elements are commonly known as dual-entry accounting, which we refer to as mankind's greatest invention, and central banking, which we refer to as mankind's greatest catastrophe. ungekürzt. 1962: The War That Wasn't: The Definitive Account of the Clash Between India and China , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 1160min
On 20 October 1962, high in the Himalayas, on the banks of the fast-flowing Nam Ka Chu, over 400 Indian soldiers were massacred, and the valley was overrun by soldiers of China's People's Liberation Army. Over the course of the next month, nearly 4,000 soldiers were killed on both sides, and the Indian army experienced its worst defeat ever. The conflict (war was never formally declared) ended because China announced a unilateral ceasefire on 21 November and halted its hitherto unhindered advance across NEFA and Ladakh. To add to India's lasting shame, neither Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru nor the Indian army was even aware that the 'war' had ended until they heard the announcement on the radio - despite the Indian embassy having been given the information two days earlier. This conflict continues to be one of our least understood episodes. Many books have been written on the events of the time, usually by those who were involved in some way, anxious to provide justification for their actions. These accounts have succeeded only in muddying the picture further. What is clear is that 1962 was an unmitigated disaster. The terrain on which most of the battles were fought (or not fought) was remote and inaccessible; the troops were sorely underequipped, lacking even warm clothing; and the men and officers who tried to make a stand were repeatedly let down by their political and military superiors. Time and again, in Nam Ka Chu, Bum-la, Tawang, Se-la, Thembang, Bomdila - all in the Kameng Frontier Division of NEFA in the Eastern Sector - and in Ladakh and Chusul in the Western Sector, our forces were mismanaged, misdirected or left to fend for themselves. If the Chinese army hadn't decided to stop its victorious campaign, the damage would have been far worse. In this definitive account of the conflict, based on dozens of interviews with soldiers and numerous others who had a firsthand view of what actually happened in 1962, Shiv Kunal Verma takes us on ungekürzt. My Advice to Pilgrims , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 121min
Grant Peeples lives in a pink house. And he is not a poet who writes poems about his cats. Though a cat does get shot in a poem in My Advice to Pilgrims -after it is found killing a bird at the feeder in the front yard. The remainder of the 92 poems here are, by-in-large, void of gunfire. But all are equally unwavering in their own version of in-your-face-ness; and are patently bereft of nostalgia and sentimentality. Each poem seems to have its own point. Not so much the kind of persuasive point that is related to an argument, but rather the kind of point that is found at the tip of an ice-pick. And it seems that Peeples' intent as a poet is to create a moment in each poem where his listeners feel that point - as it touches up against a bubble in their belief system, their assumptions, their understanding of things, or their level of comfortableness in their own skin. Or with their rote version of the truth about things. It would be fair to say that this is a poet who feels it might be his job to push you around some. There is humor, too, sprinkled throughout My Advice to Pilgrims, as well as a handful of poems that have an unmitigated raunchiness to them. There is a narrative feel throughout, except in those cases where the poems have a mini-manifesto sense about them. And it is these particular poems that seem to be placed as keys to the other poems, as they reveal Peeples' views about the world: "I don't have a philosophy," he says, "but I do have a system."September 2018 marks the publication of My Advice to Pilgrims, a book of poetry from Grant Peeples. The book is the latest from Mezcalita Press. Other writers published by the press include Jonathan Byrd, Rod Picott, Nathan Brown, Beth Wood, and Jon Dee Graham. In addition to writing poetry, Peeples is a recording artist with Gatorbone Records. He has recorded nine studio records, four of which were produced by Gurf Morlix, the Austin producer known best for prod ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Grant Peeples.
