Mary Dunnewold was a yoga-practicing, organic-food-eating health geek. But six months after a clear mammogram, she was diagnosed with stage-three breast cancer. She had six tumors. The largest was the size of a summer plum.In the next two years, she endured a bilateral mastectomy, chemotherapy, radiation, and multiple reconstruction procedures. But she soon learned that navigating cancer involves more than suffering through the treatment gauntlet. How do you walk the aisles of a small-town Target, guilty of having cancer in public, wondering who knows and who doesn’t? Where do you look when the handsome plastic surgeon kneels in front of you to measure your body fat? What etiquette applies when, during a dinner party, your chest splits open like an overripe watermelon? In this memoir, the author moves from needing a reason to explain her troubles to finding meaning despite the randomness that afflicts us all. ungekürzt. How will sex be after breast cancer? How does a couple cope with the sensitivities? For both women and men, the question is rarely asked. Soon after her 25th birthday, Katherine Schmidhofer was diagnosed with breast cancer, and her doctor advised an immediate mastectomy. Her breasts were removed, and she underwent ghastly sessions of chemotherapy and hormone therapy. She wondered whether she would ever have children. She mourned her incapacity to breastfeed. She asked herself whether a man would ever want her again. How, she thought, would he react to her scars and her new breasts? Where many women despair after breast cancer, Katherine did something remarkable: she chose to live her life - to the full. And she chose love. In this beautifully warm, often funny and deeply moving memoir, Katherine guides us through the intricacies of love and sex after the Big C - and shows why every new day is a triumph of hope and courage. ungekürzt. Today, Susie speaks with author Justin Spring, a National Book Award finalist for his book Secret Historian: The Life and Times of Samuel Steward, Professor, Tattoo Artist and Sexual Renegade. This biography reveals a man who had more sex then anyone - over 700 lovers! Steward is also unique in that he kept sexual journals and catalogues of all of these encounters. He meticulously documented the sizes of his lovers' private parts and their shapes, and what sexual activities they engaged in. Justin and Susie talk about why sailors are the gayest of all armed forces and how Alfred Kinsey enlisted Steward to unofficially collaborate on his famous reports. When is being bisexual really more like being homosexual? They talk about that too. Then, in our "Try This at Home" mailbag, Susie reads a letter from a woman who recently had a mastectomy due to breast cancer. She's feeling sexy but is worried about how new lovers might react to her single breast. "Help!" Have a question? You can call Susie's hotline at 831-480-5110. And you can send your confidential questions - plus requests for free samples and blog banners! - to susie@susiebright.com. In this hour, fashion photographer David Jay recently sent us a book of his photos. The lighting was perfect. The settings intimate. The women, nearly naked, were gorgeous. As we looked at these beautiful images, something stood out – the mastectomy scars. Next, producer Charles Monroe-Kane interviewed artist and barber Faisal Abdu'Allah in Madison, WI, at the Atwood Family Barber Shop. Then, there are lots of ways we identify ourselves – where we come from, our race, our religion… but perhaps nothing shapes our identity more than whether we’re a man or a woman. But even that can get really complicated. Independent producer Aubrey Ralph explains. After that, TTBOOK host Jim Fleming reflects on The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock.Following that, innovative dancer and choreographer Sally Gross is now in her late 70s. And though she was one of the dancers who revolted against the Martha Graham school of modern dance she says her most impressive feat was overthrowing something far greater: her own body. And finally, David Stockman. Stockman? Uhm, Stockman? Oh yeah, President Reagan’s budget director. One of the architects of supply-side economics. Well, he’s back in the limelight all these years later with his best-selling book The Great Deformation. [Broadcast Date: May 8, 2013] Language: English. Narrator: Jim Fleming. After watching too many family members die of cancer, at age 28, public speaker and comedian Caitlin Brodnick was tested for the BRCA1 gene mutation and tested positive, indicating an 87% chance she'd likely be diagnosed with breast cancer in her lifetime. She had a preventative double mastectomy, thereby becoming an everywoman's Angelina Jolie. Dangerous Boobies: Breaking Up with My Time-Bomb Breasts goes in depth into her experience from testing to surgery and on to recovery. Listeners hear the full story told in a warm, funny, and approachable way, even what it was like to go from a size 32G bra - giant, for a woman who is barely over five feet tall! - to a 32C. Engaging and open, Caitlin admits to having hated her breasts long before her surgery, and enjoying the process of "designing" her new breasts, from the shape of the breasts to the size and color of the nipples. While Caitlin's primary narrative explores the BRCA gene and breast cancer, her story is also one about body acceptance and what it takes to be confident with and in charge of one's body. Her speaking engagements and comedy routines have shown that the wider topic of breasts, breast size, and personal identity is resonating with younger listeners. The United States is fast becoming the sickest nation in the Western world. Cancer rates continue to rise. There is an epidemic of chronic disease in children. Even with all the money and modern innovations in science, the country’s health care system is beyond broken. Clearly there is a glitch in the system. But what if the solution has been here all along, and we’ve just been too blind to see it? In Curable journalist and health care advocate Travis Christofferson looks at medicine through a magnifying glass and asks an important question: What if the roots of the current US health care crisis are psychological and systemic, perpetuated not just by corporate influence and the powers that be, but by you and me? An enthralling inquiry into a “moneyball approach to medicine”, Curable explores the links between revolutionary baseball analytics; Nobel Prize-winning psychological research on confirmation bias; wildly successful maverick economic philosophy; the history of the radical mastectomy and the rise of the clinical trial; cutting-edge treatments routinely overlooked by regulatory bodies; and outdated medical models that prioritize profit over prevention. How do we fix it? First we must reframe the conflict between doctors’ intuition and statistical data. Then we must design better systems that can support doctors who are increasingly overwhelmed with the complexity of modern medicine. Curable outlines the future of medicine, detailing brilliant examples of new health care systems that prove we can do better. It turns out we have more control over our health (and happiness) than we think. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Madison Niederhauser. Here is a glittering true-crime tale unlike any you have ever encountered. Glittering because the take involved rubies, emeralds, diamonds, sapphires. The thieves were two men from Yonkers, Dominick Latella and Pete Salerno, who hit the East Coast mansions of the wealthy enclaves of Westchester and Palm Beach. Over 20 years they became known as the most successful jewel thieves in American history...until one bleak night when they got careless. The most astonishing part of the story, though, was the unique twist to their method. They never hit a mansion unless the owners were home, having supper in the dining room. Then Latella would hoist Salerno up to a second-story window of a bedroom. Latella would stay earthbound to serve as lookout while Salerno swept up the jewels invariably left by the lady of the house on her dressing table or in other obvious places.  The story is also one of great pathos: the two were finally apprehended on what Salerno had vowed would be his last job. His wife had cancer, and he was doing the job to pay for the mastectomy she needed.  Yudhijit Bhattacharjee interviewed all the major players, including the thieves (one in prison, the other now passed away) and their spouses, in this heart-stopping, glamorous, yet ultimately tragic story.  Bhattacharjee is an award-winning writer whose features and essays on espionage, cybercrime, science, and medicine have appeared in The New Yorker, The New York Times Magazine, National Geographic, Wired, and other US magazines.    Language: English.
