An inexplicable draft of wind dances across the dirt floors of the narrow passageway, which seems to stretch on with no end. The flickering flames of the torches mounted onto the rough, sandpaper-like walls of stone create eerie shadows on the dirt floors. One can hear the disembodied whispers intermingling with the chill of the musty air, prompting the hair on many people's arms to raise. Logically speaking, this is nothing more than the trick of the mind, but the whispers unquestionably feel tangible and real, especially considering the visitor is in the company of thousands upon thousands of corpses stacked onto the walls from floor to ceiling. This kind of imagery is often what springs to mind at the mention of the Roman catacombs, but there was so much more to these underground cemeteries. As Roman law forbade its citizens from burying their dead within the city walls, the roads of the Appian Way became dotted with, and later completely flanked by tombs of all sizes. Those from the upper echelons of society constructed extravagant tombs and magnificent mausoleums for their families and future descendants. There were tombs and sepulchers of every sort, from tumulus constellations, which were round mounds that rose from the ground, to boxy temples, and clusters of miniature pyramids. Next to every tomb was a milestone marker with the distance to the nearest town engraved on the stone slab. Some of these tombs - or what is left of them - continue to stand in their original sites today. One of the more renowned tombs was that of noblewoman Cecilia Metella, whose mausoleum was later converted to a fortress that featured an enormous cylindrical tower with double-winged crenellations. Another was the resting place of the Rabirii family, which is located close to the fifth Roman mile of the Appian Way. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Scott Clem. There are many concisely written and repeated teachings in the Bible that most clergy and church members cannot reconcile: Did you know that Jesus repeatedly taught that "many" who call him Lord will be shocked to learn that he will not allow them into his kingdom? Did you know Jesus told people who were trying to come to terms with who he claimed to be, to stop, as he explained that "no one is able to come to him unless the Father enables them"? How can Jesus' statements be true and yet be in harmony with Peter's teaching that God desires that not one person should perish? Did you know that Jesus forgave many who never asked, while others who asked him in faith did not necessarily receive his promise? Did you know Jesus strictly forbade his disciples from teaching others that he was the Christ and then instructed them to go and preach? What then did they preach? Did you know that John the Baptist, the apostles, and Paul could not figure out who Jesus was? What is their testimony regarding where their faith came from? Did you know that Jesus said that those with the revelation of God's will would be more accountable than those who did not know? Did you know that Jesus said "whoever believes in me will do the work I have been doing"? When asked why he did not intend to show himself to the whole world, he replied, "Those who love me will be doing as I am doing". So what is Jesus' explanation of "belief, trust, and faith"? Given so many unsettling questions, can we be 100 percent certain of forgiveness for accepting Jesus as Savior while glossing over many of the other consistent teachings? Let us consider that Jesus, Paul, Peter, and John understood perfectly what they were communicating, and so can we, without twisting, omitting, or placing greater emphasis on some scriptures over others. ungekürzt. “Any man who has the brains to think and the nerve to act for the benefit of the people of the country is considered a radical by those who are content with stagnation and willing to endure disaster.” (William Randolph Hearst)When William Randolph Hearst was in his late 50s and at the height of his power, journalist Robert Duffuss observed, “His career is unique in American history, or, for that matter, all history. Compared with him the Bennetts and even the Pulitzers are small...his acquaintances...credit him with personal charm, but do not deny his ruthlessness in business operations. Shopkeepers and his nearest rivals are simply not in his class. Here is success on a dizzying and truly American scale. Here is journalism as large as the Rocky Mountains or the Painted Desert.”However, despite his massive success, and perhaps in large measure because of it, many of Hearst’s contemporaries depicted him in negative ways. As Duffuss also noted, when it came to the newspaper magnate’s reputation, there was “a curious suggestion of lath and plaster about it, and far from being universally honored and admired as other self-made men have been, Mr. Hearst is regarded by multitudes of his fellow citizens with extreme aversion and distrust. Indeed, his career is almost never examined dispassionately and for this reason some of the salient facts about him are worth setting down in a somewhat cold-blooded manner.” This was never more apparent than during the release of Citizen Kane, a barely veiled biography of Hearst that managed to cut him so deeply that he forbade his papers from making reference to the critically acclaimed classic. It is only right to keep every positive and negative viewpoint in mind when looking at the life of a man who built his own fortune with money inherited from a father who literally grubbed it out of the ground with his own hands. While the senior Hearst may never have gotten the soil of old California from under his ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Dan Gallagher. These beautiful melodies by Chopin, the poet of the piano, show that everything he ever wrote is instantly recognizable and beloved all over the world. Chopin is the most performed composer in history because he understood human emotion. He smashed the convention that forbade a man from baring his soul to the multitude, and humanity continues to tremble and usually weep upon hearing his music, shaped to emulate the human voice. When Chopin burst upon the scene in Europe, Schumann wrote, 'Hat's off, gentlemen, a genius!' and in Paris, Chopin was taken by Prince Radziwell to the Rothchild's where he played his Waltz in C sharp minor and was an overnight sensation. He held his listeners spellbound with his virtuosity, his slim fingers easily reached a tenth and could quickly expand to cover a third of the keyboard. He untied the chords restrained in octaves and flung them up and down longing of the beseeching laments of man, and said himself that the musician without it did not have music as his mother tongue. Once he consoled a student, who in his fervor broke a string on a Polonaise, by telling the student that it was meant to be played so not a single string was left on the piano. The great Romantic period ended with the last note Chopin wrote. Many of the comments about Chopin are taken from Schirmer library and from "The Great Pianists" by Harold C. Schonberg. These works were performed on Steinway Hamburg 137, a 9-foot concert D. It has a stellar pedigree, having been chosen by Evgeny Kissen, Alicia de La Rocha, Lang Lang, Arnaldo Cohen and many other classical and jazz artists. It can overwhelm an orchestra. The recording was done at Digital Brothers Studio, Costa Mesa, California 92627.
