Ranging from simple head scarf to full-body burqa, the veil is worn by vast numbers of Muslim women around the world. What Is Veiling? explains one of the most visible, controversial, and least understood emblems of Islam. Sahar Amer's evenhanded approach is anchored in sharp cultural insight and rich historical context. Addressing the significance of veiling in the religious, cultural, political, and social lives of Muslims, past and present, she examines the complex roles the practice has played in history, religion, conservative and progressive perspectives, politics and regionalism, society and economics, feminism, fashion, and art. By highlighting the multiple meanings of veiling, the book decisively shows that the realities of the practice cannot be homogenized or oversimplified and extend well beyond the religious and political accounts that are overwhelmingly proclaimed both inside and outside Muslim-majority societies. Neither defending nor criticizing the practice, What Is Veiling? clarifies the voices of Muslim women who struggle to be heard and who, veiled or not, demand the right to live spiritual, personal, and public lives in dignity. ungekürzt. Athan Theoharis, long a respected authority on surveillance and secrecy, established his reputation for meticulous scholarship with his work on the loyalty security program developed under Truman and McCarthy. In Abuse of Power, Theoharis continues his investigation of US government surveillance and historicizes the 9/11 response. Criticizing the US government's secret activities and policies during periods of "unprecedented crisis", he recounts how presidents and FBI officials exploited concerns about foreign-based internal security threats. Drawing on information sequestered until recently in FBI records, Theoharis shows how these secret activities in the World War II and Cold War eras expanded FBI surveillance powers and, in the process, eroded civil liberties without substantially advancing legitimate security interests. Passionately argued, this timely book speaks to the costs and consequences of still-secret post-9/11 surveillance programs and counterintelligence failures. Ultimately, Abuse of Power makes the case that the abusive surveillance policies of the Cold War years were repeated in the government's responses to the September 11 attacks. ungekürzt. Spoon River has 244 accounts of the lives of people in the town that explain its goings on over a couple of centuries. Each free form verse is presented as an epitaph of one of the citizens delivered themselves, often criticizing the words said about them on their tombstone or the monument or stone left above them. The stories build on one another as well as reference various family members and others mentioned in other stories. Sherwood Anderson does a similar thing in Winesburg, Ohio where major characters in their own right become bit players in other people's narratives. It reminds one of Tom Stoppard's Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead where Hamlet is only a bit player in their lives. The interplay between successful and unsuccessful, those who think they are high born, as one successful man thought, but was actually the illegitimate child of an old woman who never got to nurture her own successful child. These interplays move the story forward as well as our hearts in reading them. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Deaver Brown. Political activist William Greene, Wes Boyd, and Eli Pariser of the liberal group Moveon.org on this edition of Fresh Air. Greene is a founder of the conservative group rightmarch.com. According to the group's website, rightmarch.com "is an umbrella website for many conservative organizations." The group has launched media and email campaigns, some of them against Moveon.org. They are planning on sponsoring TV ads criticizing the liberal group. One of the group's members recently released a country song entitled "Hey Hollywood." The song pokes fun at so-called "liberal" actors and country musicians, like Willie Nelson and The Dixie Chicks, who speak out against the war in Iraq. Wes Boyd and Eli Pariser are members of the liberal group Moveon.org. The group was founded by Boyd and Joan Blades, two Silicon Valley entrepreneurs, in the late 90s as a liberal political force. MoveOn recently sponsored the "Bush in 30 Seconds" ad contest. Some 1500 contestants submitted ads and over 100,000 people voted for them online. Moveon.org is raising money to air the winning ad on TV this week. The organization is even trying to get the ad aired during the Super Bowl. (Broadcast Date: January 21, 2004) Language: English. The first study to look at the intersection of the discourse of the Anthropocene within the two highly influential storytelling modes of fantasy and myth, this book shows the need for stories that articulate visions of a biocentric, ecological civilization. Fantasy and myth have long been humanity's most advanced technologies for collective dreaming. Today they are helping us adopt a biocentric lens, re-kin us with other forms of life, and assist us in the transition to an ecological civilization. Deliberately moving away from dystopian narratives toward anticipatory imaginations of sustainable futures, this volume blends chapters by top scholars in the fields of fantasy, myth, and Young Adult literature with personal reflections by award-winning authors and illustrators of books for young audiences, including Shaun Tan, Jane Yolen, Katherine Applegate and Joseph Bruchac. Chapters cover the works of major fantasy authors such as J. R. R. Tolkien, Terry Prachett, J. K. Rowling, China Miéville, Barbara Henderson, Jeanette Winterson, John Crowley, Richard Powers, George R. R. Martin and Kim Stanley Robinson. They range through narratives set in the UK, USA, Nigeria, Ghana, Pacific Islands, New Zealand and Australia. Across the chapters, fantasy and myth are framed as spaces where visions of sustainable futures can be designed with most detail and nuance. Rather than merely criticizing the ecocidal status quo, the book asks how mythic narratives and fantastic stories can mobilize resistance around ideas necessary for the emergence of an ecological civilization.

Why are you listening to this book? Because: You are disgusted and unhappy every time you look in the mirror. You want people to stop criticizing and making fun of your weight. You want to look your best everywhere you go and get complimented on. You want to have more energy and do all the active things that get you excited. You want to get healthier and live longer and not die from obesity-related deaths. Weight loss seems simple at the outset, but the reality of the process is that it's much more difficult than many expect. Anyone can be on a low-calorie streak only to blow things with unhealthy food, at any point of the process. This difficulty is admittedly daunting - one off day can ruin several other days of hard work. To help those interested in losing weight - and keeping it off - find success, countless products and services exist today, from supplements to exercise products and everything in-between. For as effective as these products can be, they fail to recognize that the process of losing weight requires mental discipline to keep at its active participation. Accordingly, the key is finding consistency in the weight-loss process. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Challenge Self.
