'From the opening paragraph, I was spellbound, entranced. Through real stories about what happens when our fragile perception of the world around us and within us is severed, Guy Leschziner connects us back to our senses.' Professor Alice RobertsWhere are you now? Look around you; what can you see? Close your eyes and think of a loved one - do you see their face? Stretch out a hand; what can you feel with your fingertips, your palm, the soft underside of your wrist? What can you hear - nearby and far away? The information you receive from your senses makes up your world. But that world does not exist. What we perceive to be the absolute truth of the world around us is a complex reconstruction, a virtual reality created by the complex machinations of our minds in tandem with the wiring of our nervous systems. But what happens if that wiring goes awry? What happens if connections falter, or new and unexpected connections are made? Tiny shifts in the microbiology of our nervous systems can cause the world around us to shift and mutate, to become alien and unfamiliar. In The Man Who Tasted Words, consultant neurologist Guy Leschziner takes us on a journey through the senses, exploring how each one shapes our experience of the world. And investigating what happens when they deviate from the norm. Along the way we meet a number of extraordinary individuals and step through the looking glass and into their worlds. Worlds where hot and cold are reversed, where a person with no sight sees fantastical visions, or where words have a taste and sounds create sensations. But while fascinating, their experiences are more than simply curiosities. They teach us about our own perception of the world, forcing us to question the idea of 'normal' senses, and whether such a thing even exists. Does blue look the same to you and me? Does grass smell the same? Or sugar taste as sweet? Do we even have the same understanding of what 'sweet' is?The Man Who Tasted Words unpacks the science behind your senses and challenges you to try and see the world through another's eyes - and ears, and nose and mouth. It will illuminate, it will surprise, and it will leave your world just a little bit changed.'A truly astonishing book - from the story of the man who tasted words to that of Paul who could pull out his own teeth and break his legs yet feel no pain. These are beautifully and engagingly written stories of how our senses tell us about the reality of the world - or, sometimes, don't.' Gavin Esler, author of How Britain Ends'Stories of people who experience the world differently show us what it means to be human. This is a deeply moving and powerful book, full of provocative ideas about human perception and the way we construct reality.' Daniel M. Davis, author of The Secret Body and The Beautiful Cure'This is a book vibrant with personality and full of wonder. Professor Leschziner takes us through an exploration of our senses, making us question the nature of our reality and how we interpret the world around us. It is a profound, entertaining and quite exceptional book.' Dr Alastair Santhouse, Psychiatrist and Author of Head First'In vivid stories of patient maladies that affect our very human sensations of sight, sound, smell, touch and pain, Leschziner has deeply explored the sensory experiences that bombard every moment of our lives but of which we are barely aware. What a terrific melding of brain science with thoughtful ideas on our window to the outside world.' Allan Ropper, author of Reaching Down the Rabbit Hole and How the Brain Lost its Mind.'A fascinating, important and disturbing book. Words will never taste the same again!' John Humphrys

Rob Jacoby is a New York-based musician concentrated in jazz. Although mainly a tenor saxophonist, he also has acute abilities on clarinet, flute, and the other saxophones, as well as bassoon and bass clarinet. Rob also plays club dates and many musicals, utilizing his doubling abilities. He leads his own group that plays private parties, clubs, and restaurants, in the New York City, Westchester County, and surrounding areas. Rob Jacoby grew up in White Plains, New York and graduated from Alexander Hamilton High School in Elmsford, NY. He began saxophone instruction at the age of 8 with his mentor, Milt Williams, father of actress/singer Vanessa Williams and actor/comedian Chris Williams. By age 11, Rob's interests concentrated on jazz music and he began studies in this genre elsewhere. Rob's career began by playing in musical productions in local theaters at the age of 12, honing his reading abilities and doubling skills. Later, he played with the Westchester County Youth Jazz Ensemble and began to play jazz gigs in parks, festivals, and other locations. Rob started his own group called the Westchester Blue Notes, a sextet, who performed throughout Westchester County and the rest of the tri-state area. After a few years, the group began to mutate and it's original name became rarely billed. Rob began to lead his own quartet/quintet and started performing in local clubs, restaurants, and bars. At the age of 15, Rob began studying with Grammy Award-winning saxophonist Ralph Lalama, who took the young musician under his wing and became one of his mentors. During Rob's last year in high school, he was selected as the first tenor saxophonist in the New York All State Jazz Ensemble directed by pianist/composer Mike Holober. The band performed in both Rochester and Albany and Rob gained recognition and praise for his remarkable talent. Rob has had the pleasure of recording for world-renowned jazz producer Teo Macero. The recording included legendary musicians such as Lee Konitz, Dave Liebman, Alex Sipiagin, George Garzone, and others. The album was released in the summer of 2007. Rob is currently attending New York University in the Jazz Performance program, led by Dave Schroeder, and is given the opportunity to work with such luminaries as Don Friedman, Ralph Lalama, Brian Lynch, Joe Lovano, Billy Drewes, Jim McNeely, Dave Pietro, and Rich Shemaria. Over his short, yet fruitful, career, Rob has performed at the Blue Note, Jazz at Lincoln Center's Allen Room, the Garage, the Bowery Poetry Club, and has been seen at Smalls, Sweet Rhythm, Showman's, and the Bar Next Door. He has had the pleasure of sharing the stage with greats including Joe Lovano, Ralph Lalama, Steve Turre, Dennis Irwin, Wynton Marsalis, Chris Potter, Brian Lynch, Joe Magnarelli, and Barry Ries.

Double Decker! Doug & Kirill - The Complete Series - When Kirill is recruited by the SEVEN-O, a team dedicated to stopping users of the drug Anthem, he's ready to prove himself. That's easier said than done after partnering with veteran Doug Billingham-who's kind of an asshole. Somehow, this idiot odd couple must combine braincells and come together to stop Esperanza. But a stellar secret from Kirill's past could bring about a new phase of trouble! - The once peaceful city-state of Lisvalletta has found itself beset by a dangerous new drug called Anthem. The side effects of the drug allow the user to enter a state of Overdrive, wherein they mutate into superpowered beasts with inhuman abilities. With the police powerless to stop this new threat, the responsibility falls upon the Special Crime Investigation Unit SEVEN-O. To offset the dangers of this work, the investigators work under the patented "Double Decker" system, which requires them to team up in "buddy cop" pairs. As a child, average police officer Kirill Vrubel fantasized about being a hero who would save his school from a random terrorist attack. His chance to be a hero arrives when his landlady blackmails him into searching for her lost cat. Upon arriving and falling asleep in an abandoned warehouse, Kirill finds himself in the middle of a hostage situation involving an Anthem user. By teaming up with SEVEN-O detective Douglas "Doug" Bilingam, Kirill earns his spot as the newest member of SEVEN-O. Now, with the help of this secret organization, he may finally achieve his dream of becoming a hero.
