The Rock Star in Seat 3A: A Novel , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 261min
It's Hazel's 30th birthday and she has everything she's ever wanted: a kickass job, a dream apartment in New York City, and the perfect boyfriend - who's just days away from proposing. Hazel thinks she's happy but isn't quite ready to settle down. So when her most far-fetched fantasy enters the realm of the possible, shouldn't she drop everything to see it through? The morning after her birthday, Hazel boards a flight to L.A., only to get the surprise of her life. When she's bumped up to first class, extra legroom and free drinks are absolutely the last things on her mind when she catches sight of her seatmate: her all-time biggest celebrity crush, rock star Finn Schiller! Only the night before, she'd confessed her infatuation with the gorgeous musician, and her boyfriend joked that she had a free pass if she ever met him. Hazel can't believe fate has actually thrown them together. Even more unbelievable is that during the flight they genuinely connect. Finn likes her uncensored cursing and wicked sense of humor, and that she's unlike all of his groupies; Hazel likes his killer looks, ripped physique, and soulful music. But what started as a fantasy quickly becomes a real attraction, and after a dream date and taste of the rock-star life with Finn in L.A., Hazel is forced to examine the track her life is on. Indulging in a passionate affair with a rock star seems crazy - but could she ever forgive herself if she walked away from her wildest dream coming true? And is her wildest dream the stuff that happiness is made of? A lively novel about a down-to-earth New York City girl who suddenly finds herself in a rock 'n' roll Cinderella fantasy, The Rock Star in Seat 3A is seasoned with Jill Kargman's signature wit and hilarious dialogue. This is a fairy-tale romance with a twist. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Jill Kargman. Audio sample: https://samples.audible.de/bk/harp/003172/bk_harp_003172_sample.mp3. History for Kids: An Interactive Biography of John Wayne for Children , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 27min
Perfect for ages 7-10. "Every country in the world loved the folklore of the West - the music, the dress, the excitement, everything that was associated with the opening of a new territory. It took everybody out of their own little world. The cowboy lasted a hundred years, created more songs and prose and poetry than any other folk figure. The closest thing was the Japanese samurai. Now, I wonder who'll continue it." - John Wayne Hollywood has produced no shortage of famous movie stars, but none have been as culturally significant as John Wayne. Marion Morrison was born in a quintessentially quaint Midwestern town, but he eventually grew up to become John Wayne, the legend of the silver screen who embodied the Western frontier. Wayne starred in so many movies (nearly 150 in all) that when asked to name his worst, he joked that 50 of them were tied, but the excessive number allowed Wayne to portray heroes of all stripes, from cowboys to soldiers, and he was invariably charming, courageous, and full of rugged, masculine swagger. Even as Westerns have certainly waned in popularity, Wayne himself has remained immensely popular, in part because he set the prototype for the heroic character, regardless of genre. Wayne will always be associated with Westerns, John Wayne transcended the Western genre. Through the portrayal of rugged, masculine characters, Wayne came to epitomize the American spirit and the way Americans view themselves. In that sense, he is truly America's actor, and he continues to live on in both the reels of Hollywood's archives and the living rooms of middle America. At the same time, the central role of John Wayne in defining a big piece of American culture is not without controversy. His later interviews prove that point. Many Americans today realize that John Wayne's America, though beloved by many, is not the America that everyone calls their own. Legends of Hollywood: The Life of Errol Flynn , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 68min
Hollywood has never lacked leading men who could captivate viewers with dramatic performances that depict them as suave romantics or dashing heroes, especially during the Golden Age of Hollywood when stars like Humphrey Bogart, Clark Gable, and Cary Grant graced screens. But in 1940, the fourth most popular star in the US was a foreign actor from Australia, and unlike other movie stars, he was more notorious for his pursuits off the screen than on it. In an era long before social media and TMZ, Errol Flynn represented the epitome of a swashbuckling playboy, with enough mystery and intrigue surrounding him and his background to fascinate even those who didn't see his movies. An article in Time magazine got to the heart of the matter in 1938 when it noted, "Of all the heroes of Hollywood, Errol Flynn has by long odds the greatest amount of non-phony glamor. His life has been as adventurous as any of the swashbuckling characters he has portrayed. At 18, he was a member of the English Olympic boxing team. At 19, he was master of an island trading schooner in the South Seas. He has chased head-hunters in New Guinea and 'recruited' blacks for British miners. Once he made $5,000 mining gold, got drunk and blew it all on a schooner, The Sirocco, which he sailed in the South Seas and wrote a book about (Beam Ends)." Naturally, when he was at the peak of his powers both on and off the screen, Flynn frequently joked about his lifestyle and traded upon it for popularity, with comments like "I like my whisky old and my women young" and "Women won't let me stay single and I won't let me stay married." Not surprisingly, Flynn was just as fast and loose with his money, to the extent that he once asserted, "Any man who has $10,000 left when he dies is a failure." ungekürzt. Language: English. Rails of Drowsiness , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 22min
Three of us shared a room at the University of Southampton. The director considered three would not allow the conspiracy of two if the third party always creates discord, and he would learn about the plans of the other two. And after those two would become the third in discord. Not in our case. It was the only room where the betrayal did not appear. Time passed, and one of my companions fulfilled his dream that he always shared with us: to have his own airplane, piloted by him. One day, the gales of tempests swallowed him to never return him. The other of my companions swore to us to take over the sea, and when he finally had his own boat, after several misfortunes in his life, he decided to loose himself in the immense ocean to never return. They joked I only wanted to travel by train. "Someday, you will disappear," they told me. The trains that I had idealized have not died out, but they are in agony. I have traveled in some when I have been able and now time and modernity have left behind them and my friends have disappeared, but I continue traveling in them and will forever. Forever and as long as I have a collection of poems, unique in it's genre, like the one we crave in our hands, you and me.The trains have become one of those places of the most sensitive humanity, having represented the union of the world that, together with the steamboats, connected it as if, for the first time, individuals appreciated each other to never forget. But nostalgia and abandonment have tirelessly pursued their demise to make way for sophisticated technologies. They have become the junkyard of our most intimate feelings of abandonment and evocation. The book in your hands recovers them to a protean level; remembrance that will inevitably make us eternal passengers of the interminable journey, with its hymn of smoke and distant sounds. The Rails of Drowsiness makes us feel, not merely listen to, verses that are the sensitive source to rememb ungekürzt. Mexico and the World Wars: The History of Germany’s Efforts to Involve Mexico in World War I and World War II , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 112min
Otto von Bismarck, the leading German statesman of the 19th century, once joked, “There is a Providence that protects idiots, drunkards, children, and the US of America”. He said this not because the Americans were a great concern for him - his main interest in the US was trade -, but as the architect of the first unified German state, he was setting the tone for what two generations of German nationals would feel about America’s apparent invulnerability. It would always be better, thus, to keep America away from Germany's business.Nonetheless, during the two major wars of the 20th century, America and Germany did indeed clash against each other, and in both cases, American entry into the war was a decisive factor in the defeat of the Germans. Germany had a good reason for desiring the non-interference of the American colossus: with a declining British Empire, and the rest of Europe mired in a diplomatic labyrinth, America seemed to be the only nation with the capacity to tip the scales in a major war.Germany respected and feared American power as much as the US marveled at Germany's impetus and its ability to mobilize an entire nation. Indeed, in both wars, the US waited until it believed it had no choice but to declare war and engage in a conflict that was taking place on the other side of the world. In World War I, it was the discovery of a German plan to attack the US through Mexico that overturned public opinion against neutrality, and in World War II, it wasn't until Pearl Harbor.Of course, this is not to say that America was not active in the war efforts before its official entry. Germany always tried to stay a step ahead and weaken the US where it least expected it: its own neighborhood. Thus, Germany placed great emphasis on luring Mexico into its sphere of influence. Operating in Canada was out of the question, not only because of the difficult access from the North Atlantic, but also because greater historical and cultural ties un ungekürzt. Language: English. The Eiffel Tower: The History of Paris' Most Famous Landmark , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 95min
Being the most striking manifestation of the art of metal structures by which our engineers have shown in Europe, it is one of the most striking of our modern national genius. - Gustave Eiffel It's the home of kings, emperors, and aristocrats, and the home of the Champs-Élysées, the Bastille, the Louvre and the salons that fueled the Enlightenment. For foreigners like Benjamin Franklin, it was the most beautiful city in the world, and millions of people still visit those same sites every year. Known as the "City of Light," Paris seamlessly blends its rich past with all the trappings of a modern city, and the city's features and qualities are taken for granted today, but Paris was not always that way. In fact, it took nearly half a century of redesigning the city during the 19th century to transform it into the city it is today. Though it may be hard to believe today, the Eiffel Tower was initially met with derision by many Frenchmen, some of whom compared it to the Tower of Babel and complained that the "useless and monstrous" structure would obscure treasures such as Notre Dame. In response to such criticisms, Eiffel himself pointed out, "Can one think that because we are engineers, beauty does not preoccupy us or that we do not try to build beautiful, as well as solid and long lasting structures? Aren't the genuine functions of strength always in keeping with unwritten conditions of harmony? Besides, there is an attraction, a special charm in the colossal to which ordinary theories of art do not apply." It's safe to say that Eiffel was correct. Each year, millions of people refute those original notions by riding to the top and making it the most visited paid monument in the entire world. Indeed, the Eiffel Tower has welcomed over 250 million visitors in less than 130 years. Eiffel had the good fortune of being vindicated in his lifetime, and as he once joked, "I ought to be jealous of the tower. She is more famous than I am. ungekürzt. Language: English. Our Miss Brooks: The Ultimate Collection - Over 180 Shows, Hörbuch, Digital, 4750min
Our Miss Brooks was a hit on radio from the outset; within eight months of its launch as a regular series, the show landed several honors, including four for Eve Arden, who won polls in four individual publications of the time. Arden had actually been the third choice to play the title role. Harry Ackerman, at the time CBS's West Coast director of programming, wanted Shirley Booth for the part, but as he told historian Gerald Nachman many years later, he realized Booth was too focused on the underpaid downside of public school teaching at the time to have fun with the role. Lucille Ball was believed to be the next choice, but she was already committed to My Favorite Husband and didn't audition. Produced by Larry Berns and written by director Al Lewis, Our Miss Brooks premiered on CBS on July 19, 1948. According to radio critic John Crosby, her lines were very "feline" in dialogue scenes with principal Conklin and would-be boyfriend Boynton, with sharp, witty comebacks. The interplay between the cast - blustery Conklin, nebbishy Denton, accommodating Harriet, absentminded Mrs. Davis, clueless Boynton, scheming Miss Enright - also received positive reviews. Arden won a radio listeners' poll by Radio Mirror magazine as the top ranking comedienne of 1948-1949, receiving her award at the end of an Our Miss Brooks broadcast that March. "I'm certainly going to try in the coming months to merit the honor you've bestowed upon me, because I understand that if I win this [award] two years in a row, I get to keep Mr. Boynton," she joked. But she was also a hit with the critics; a winter 1949 poll of newspaper and magazine radio editors taken by Motion Picture Daily named her the year's best radio comedienne. For its entire radio life, the show was sponsored by Colgate-Palmolive-Peet, promoting Palmolive soap, Lustre Creme shampoo, and Toni hair care products. The radio series continued until 1957, a year Language: English. Narrator: Eve Arden, Gale Gordon. Audio sample: https://samples.audible.de/bk/bnpp/000470/bk_bnpp_000470_sample.mp3. Lucky Day
Der schwedische Musiker David Myhr (von The Merrymakers) macht zeitlose Popmusik, die auf starken Melodien und harmonischen Stimmen basiert. Where do musical ideas come from? How do songwriters compose their melodies? Why is one idea more appealing than the other? Fundamentally, what makes a great song? These were among the issues examined by Swedish singer/songwriter David Myhr over the last four years. The answers are explored in both an academic research project and Myhr's second solo album Lucky Day. First entering the public eye as frontman of The Merrymakers -- a melody-packed, harmony-laden combo known for continuing Sweden's heritage as the mecca of melody in the 90's -- The Merrymakers sold over 100,000 albums in Japan alone. Myhr has further earned his proverbial stripes writing for international artists, including Puffy Amiyumi and Yuko Yamaguchi, in addition to feature films and advertising. An ambitious follow-up to Myhr's debut solo effort Soundshine, his first full-length release in six years is not just an album with 10 new songs but a portfolio that was assembled as part of Myhr's doctorate, funded by his "day gig" in Swedish academia.
