Transitions: Poems , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 48min
Life is all about transitions. Changes. We encounter experiences and peoples, and our life is never the same after that. In his new volume of poems, Transitions: Poems, dedicated to three Cambridge University graduates, the poet H. C. Kim explores wonders in human experiences. Kim's artful skill as a poet is the impressionistic way in which he captures events, people, experiences, and life. The reader is guided through a life's journey as if in a cinematic experience. Poems come alive and invite the reader into the world of fantasy and poetic empathy. Kim's poems are good for reading at the beach for relaxation as well as for more intense analysis into metaphor, symbolism, and socio-cultural significance. H. C. Kim is quickly becoming not only a commentator on modern life and experiences but also a poetic muse-prophet of possibilities and hope. Those who have enjoyed his other poetry volumes, such as Going the Distance: A Poetry Collection and Total Depravity: Poems, will particularly appreciate his artful addition to "poetry-in-motion" that is quickly becoming a genre in its own right. ungekürzt. Thought and Poetry (eBook, ePUB)
Addressing objective and subjective views of the self and the world in philosophy and poetry, this collection brings together a chronology of John Koethe's thoughts on the connections between the two forms and makes a significant contribution to unsettling the oppositions that separate them. The essays traverse the philosophical conception of the self in modern poetry and locate connections between poets including William Wordsworth, Wallace Stevens, and John Ashberry alongside philosophers including Kant, Schopenhauer, and Wittgenstein. Koethe pays special attention to romantic poetry and notions of the sublime, which he maps onto subjective individual experience and the objective perspective on the natural world. Koethe further explores this theme in a new essay on romanticism and the sublime in relation to the mind-body problem. Using an associative and impressionistic style to write philosophically about poetry, Koethe defends his own approach that such writing cannot and should not aim for the rigor of philosophical argumentation.- Shop: buecher

Edouard Manet: 132 Master Drawings (eBook, ePUB)
Essential figure in the transition from Realism to Impressionism, Edouard Manet was an influential painter who left his own unique mark on the art world. In 1856, in his early thirties, Manet opened his own studio. He began painting in a quasi-realist style, which transitioned to a more Impressionist style when he met the painter Berthe Morisot, who exposed him to her circle of Impressionist painter friends, including Claude Monet and Pierre-Auguste Renoir. Many of Manet’s works revolved around depictions of leisure activities, including observations of social life in all of the classes, from bourgeois horse racing to prostitutes drinking, to the streets of Paris and boating scenes, many of which were made from sketches done on the spot. Although his work was Impressionistic, he resisted involvement with any specific style of painting, and thus preferred to present his works to the Salon of Paris rather than the many Impressionist Exhibitions.- Shop: buecher

Memory of Monet , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 484min
Alexandra Stewart thought she was born to be a spy. Her eidetic memory, the adrenaline rush, and the calling to help people was in her blood. But after her latest mission in Paris and her confrontation with a terrorist, Alex begins to question her role working for The Company, a secret spy organization that exists in the basement of Brown University. When the CIA asks for her assistance on a mission only she has the ability to complete, Alex agrees to travel to Mexico City as an exchange student at an elite art school, leaving behind her comatose brother and her handler who has risked everything to keep her safe and would do anything to be with her. In an attempt to prove to herself where she belongs, Alex throws herself into the mission, only to discover that her training may not be enough. As her perspective changes, she begins to realize that her memory isn't a canvas of realistic paint strokes, but an impressionistic landscape influenced by her own emotions. Scaling buildings and discovering secrets may not be as hard as finding her own heart. And the enemy she is fighting against could be the one person closest to her. ungekürzt. Language: English. Screening Room: Family Pictures , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 359min
From the acclaimed author of the international best seller Einstein's Dreams, here is a lyrical memoir of Memphis from the 1930s through the 1960s: the music and the racism, the early days of the movies, and a powerful grandfather whose ghost continues to haunt the family. Alan Lightman's grandfather, M. A. Lightman, was the family's undisputed patriarch: it was his movie-theater empire that catapulted the family to prominence in the South, his fearless success that both galvanized and paralyzed his descendants, haunting them for a half century after his death. In this lyrical and impressionistic memoir, Lightman writes about returning to Memphis in an attempt to understand the people he so eagerly left behind forty years earlier. As aging uncles and aunts begin telling family stories, Lightman rediscovers his Southern roots and slowly realizes the errors in his perceptions of his grandfather and of his own father, who had been crushed by M. A. Here is a family saga set against a throbbing century of Memphis--the rhythm and blues, the barbecue and pecan pie, and the segregated society--that includes personal encounters with Elvis, Martin Luther King Jr., and E. H. "Boss" Crump. At the heart of it all is a family haunted by the ghost of the domineering M. A. and the struggle of the author to understand his conflicted loyalties to his father and grandfather. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Bronson Pinchot. What Remains , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 520min
Being left with a strand of even the highest quality milky-white pearls isn't quite the same thing as pearls of wisdom to live by, as Karen von Hahn reveals in her memoir about her stylish and captivating mother, Susan - a mercurial, grandiose, Guerlain-and-vodka-soaked narcissist whose search for glamour and fulfillment through the acquisition and collection of beautiful things ultimately proved hollow. A tale of growing up in 1970s and 1980s Toronto in the fabulousness of a bourgeois Jewish family that valued panache over pragmatism and making a design statement over substance, von Hahn's recollections of her dramatic and domineering mother are exemplified by the objects she held most dear: from a strand of prized pearls, to a Venetian mirror worthy of the palace of Versailles, to the silver satin sofas that were the epitome of her signature style. She also describes the misunderstandings and sometimes hurt and pain that come with being raised by her stunning, larger-than-life mother who in many ways embodied the flash-and-glam, high-flying, wealth-accumulating generation that gave birth to our modern-day material culture. Alternating between satire and sadness, von Hahn reconstructs the past through a series of exquisitely impressionistic memories, ultimately questioning the value of the things we hold dear and - after her complicated, yet impossible-to-forget mother is gone - what exactly remains. ungekürzt. Shin Hanga
Twentieth-century Japanese printmaking has come in for relatively little attention. Classic Hokusai and Hiroshige landscapes and Utamaro's beautiful images of women remain the dominant form. All the same, since the 1990s museums and private collectors have shown a growing interest in shin hanga ('new prints'): balanced designs printed on luxurious paper, with the finest pigments and in smaller editions. They are the fruit of the traditional yet highly successful collaboration between artist, publisher, block-cutter and printer. It is not so much in their subject matter as their visual language that shin hanga prints set themselves apart from their traditional precursors. Where the classically depicted women were stylized and idealized, their more recent counterparts are based on real models, individually recognizable and full of emotion. The modern landscapes, meanwhile, are impressionistic rather than figurative, using a range of colour nuances to achieve highly atmospheric results. This book offers a unique selection with which to explore twentieth-century Japanese printmaking. The prints it reproduces are mostly drawn from two large private collections, and, by way of great exception, items from the family collection of the publisher Watanabe, the man who started it all.- Shop: buecher
