Almost 20 years ago, Clayton Christensen popularized the term disruption in his book The Innovator's Dilemma, describing it as a set of risks that established firms face. Since then, few have closely examined his account. Joshua Gans does so in this book. He looks at companies that have proven resilient and those that have fallen and explains why some companies have successfully managed disruption while others have not. Departing from the conventional wisdom, Gans identifies two kinds of disruption: demand-side, when successful firms focus on their main customers and underestimate market entrants with innovations that target niche demands; and supply-side, when firms focused on developing existing competencies become incapable of developing new ones. Gans describes the full range of actions business leaders can take to deal with each type of disruption, from "self-disrupting" independent internal units to tightly integrated product development. But therein lies the disruption dilemma: A firm cannot practice both independence and integration at once. Gans shows business leaders how to choose their strategies, so their firms can deal with disruption while continuing to innovate. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Simon Vance. First published in 1980, Michael E. Porter's Competitive Strategy went against the accepted wisdom of the time that said firms should focus on expanding their market share. Porter claimed they should, in fact, analyze the five forces that mold the environment in which they compete: new entrants, substitute products, buyers, suppliers, and industry rivals. Then they could rationally choose one of three "generic strategies" - lowering cost, differentiating their product, or catering to a niche market. With its straightforward, nontechnical approach, Competitive Strategy soon became one of the most influential and frequently quoted books on business strategy. But it has not been without its critics, who say Porter picked his examples and academic research selectively. Others, meanwhile, claim his theories - now almost four decades old - are out of date for an economy increasingly shaped by globalization, technology, and the Internet. Competitive Strategy is still Porter's most widely read work, but he has also published Competitive Advantage: Creating and Sustaining Superior Performance (1985), looking at competition from the standpoint of a whole industry, and The Competitive Advantage of Nations (1990), which examines how countries compete with each other economically. ungekürzt. When a volcano suddenly seems to erupt and threaten a mountain town of North Carolina, Inspector Strock is sent to determine the danger. When an automobile race in Wisconsin is interrupted by the unexpected appearance of a vehicle traveling at many times the top speed of the entrants, Strock is again consulted. And when an odd-shaped boat is sighted moving at impossible speeds off the New England coast, Stock and his boss begin to wonder if the incidents are related. Then Strock gets a note warning him to abandon his investigation, on pain of death but he is intrigued rather than deterred. The story is set in a period when gasoline engines were new and automobiles were rare, and so the appearance of a vehicle that can move at astounding speeds on land, on water - and as later seen, underwater and through the air - marks a technological advance far beyond the reach any nation. It is technology invented by a man who styles himself "The Master of the World" and threatens the peace of the world unless Inspector Strock can find a way to stop the mad inventor. ungekürzt. In this, John David Krygelski's third and perhaps most powerful novel to date, he creates a spine-tingling story of suspense, drama, and intrigue. After the only child of the President commits suicide, President Walker proposes an institution where people who have lost all hope may enter. Aegis, intended to be a civilized alternative to suicide, is built and opened. There are only two rules in Aegis: No communication is allowed between the outside world and those who enter, and once individuals go in...they can never leave. With the absence of any staff, Aegis is ruled by anarchy and the entrants must create a new society.Twelve years pass and what began as a noble social experiment has turned into a hideous nightmare, fraught with controversy and public outrage. In response, Elias Charon is selected by the new President to be the first to enter Aegis and be allowed to leave. Ostensibly sent in to investigate the claims of abuse, a darker and heinous personal motive arises. With pulse-pounding suspense, The Aegis Solution takes the reader through a twisting, turning plot to an explosive and electrifying climax. ungekürzt. Language: English. Since the Internet's popularity in the 1990s, cyberspace has continued to evolve. We have developed several computer-mediated virtual environments, such as social networks, video conferencing, virtual 3D worlds, augmented reality apps, and Non-Fungible Token Games. Such virtual settings, albeit non-permanent and disconnected, have enabled us to achieve varying degrees of digital transformation. Metaverse was invented to further encourage digital revolution in all aspects of our physical life. The notion of an immersive Internet as a massive, unified, persistent, and shared realm is at the heart of the Metaverse. While the Metaverse may appear futuristic, fueled by emerging technologies such as Extended Reality, 5G, and Artificial Intelligence, our cyberspace's digital "big bang" is not far away.Metaverse is a closed compound word: Meta (a Greek prefix meaning "after, after, or beyond") and the universe. In other terms, the Metaverse is a post-reality universe. This continuous and durable multiuser environment combines physical reality and digital virtuality. Metaverse offers the ability to address the basic limitations of web-based 2D e-learning tools in distant online education. As the Metaverse's new worlds emerge, early entrants begin to contribute ideas. This is a fantastic opportunity to impact how people live and conduct business for the foreseeable future. However, it brings a new level of responsibility: trust will be crucial to adoption, and organizations must evaluate how they develop a responsible Metaverse and set the norms for all that follows.

This stunning first novel from Nebula Award and Theodore Sturgeon Memorial Award finalist Ted Kosmatka is a riveting tale of science cut loose from ethics. Set in an amoral future where genetically engineered monstrosities fight each other to the death in an Olympic event, The Games envisions a harrowing world that may arrive sooner than you think. Silas Williams is the brilliant geneticist in charge of preparing the U.S. entry into the Olympic Gladiator competition, an internationally sanctioned bloodsport with only one rule: No human DNA is permitted in the design of the entrants. Silas lives and breathes genetics; his designs have led the United States to the gold in every previous event. But the other countries are catching up. Now, desperate for an edge in the upcoming games, Silas’s boss engages an experimental supercomputer to design the genetic code for a gladiator that cannot be beaten. The result is a highly specialized killing machine, its genome never before seen on earth. Not even Silas, with all his genius and experience, can understand the horror he had a hand in making. And no one, he fears, can anticipate the consequences of entrusting the act of creation to a computer’s cold logic. Now Silas races to understand what the computer has wrought, aided by a beautiful xenobiologist, Vidonia João. Yet as the fast-growing gladiator demonstrates preternatural strength, speed, and - most disquietingly - intelligence, Silas and Vidonia find their scientific curiosity giving way to a most unexpected emotion: sheer terror. ungekürzt. No flash, no sizzle. Few decisions we make are more important than the ones about the direction of our career. With good reason, more and more people are questioning whether the employee model is right for them. Most have recognized that job security is based on what they are now contributing, and past contributions matter little. They look around and see others who made the leap to become an independent consultant (or freelancer), making far more money, doing more exciting work, and just having more fun.Why can’t you do the same? The short answer is that life as an independent consultant is not for everyone. Based on the author’s extensive experience, this book attempts to help the listener understand what life as an independent consultant is all about. In addition to drawing on the broad body of knowledge in the industry, it uses real-life examples to provides a no-nonsense perspective on many key issues. It will help you answer questions related to:How life as an independent consultant will fit your personal needs and whether you should make the leapHow you might plan and operate your business as an independent consultantWhat tools and frameworks might be helpful and how you might use themWhat you might monetize from your practice, should you decide to terminate the businessAfter a long career as a practitioner and business owner in the consulting industry, the author wanted to share his learnings with others.
