William James propounded his theories of pragmatism in this book. He emphasized "radical empiricism" and the concept that the meaning of any idea - philosophical, political, social, or otherwise - only has validity in terms of its experiential and practical consequences. He wished to test competing systems of thought in the "marketplace of actual experience" to determine whether adopting a particular philosophical theory or way of looking at the world makes an actual difference in individual conduct or in how people perceive and react to the varieties of experience. ungekürzt. St. Therese emphasized the way we do things for God rather than the things we do for him. In that spirit, Lent is less about what we're offering and more about why. That insight transforms this season from one of narrow concern over what to give up into one of joyful freedom to enter into the love of Christ. The meditations in The Little Way of Lent - all colored by St. Therese's Little Way of Spiritual Childhood - will transform your Lenten observance and help you focus on God's redeeming love. ungekürzt. This Harvard Business Review (HBR) article describes and focuses on the unique tasks only a CEO can perform. The core elements of this article were created by Peter Drucker. They were then updated and further refined by former P & G CEO, Arthur Lafley. This article and our corresponding Harvard Thoughts audio book define the importance of the CEO focusing his or her organization first on the most meaningful outsider, the customer. Then Drucker addresses the concept of What Business are You In (also see our HBR based audiobook What Business are You In? by Ted Levitt) and how this is a task only the CEO can perform. The CEO must identify the organization’s core competencies and shed the non-core ones. Lafley describes how he did this at P & G with Peter Drucker’s assistance by focusing on core brands for P & G to be more nimble in their marketing efforts and by spinning off secondary ones to companies such as Smuckers who added these brands to their core product lines. P & G also benefited financially from this refocusing by becoming a major Smuckers’ shareholder. Drucker then emphasized the second key CEO task, balancing short term against long term needs to earn sufficient present income to support investments for the future to sustain and grow the company over extended periods of time. And finally they stated that the third key CEO task was to establish clear values and core standards in an organization. They emphasized this meant the CEO must make sure these are completed understood and internalized throughout the organization, from top to bottom. ungekürzt. Language: English. And for most parents, the major challenge is getting their children to have an adequate amount of quality sleep per day. However, in reality, there many factors that contribute to parents being able to achieve quality sleep for both themselves and their children. Sleep is very important for the general development of babies, especially the brain, immunity and growth among other things. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Debbie Fisher. Ralph Waldo Emerson was an American philosopher, lecturer, essayist, and poet, who is best remembered for leading the Transcendentalist movement of the mid-19th century. He was a a champion of individualism and wrote dozens of essays. Most criics consider "Self-Reliance" his best. It has the most thorough statement of one of Emerson's repeating themes, the need for each individual to avoid conformity and false consistency. It also emphasized the need to follow one's own instincts and ideas. "Self-Reliance" contains one of Emerson's most famous quotes: "A foolish consistency is the hobgoblin of little minds." Deemed "irreplaceable" by Robert E. Lee, Stonewall Jackson assumed his nickname during the Battle of Bull Run in the Civil War. It is said that the Army of Northern Virginia never fully recovered from the loss of Jackson's leadership when he was accidentally shot by one of his own men and died in 1863. Davis highlights Stonewall Jackson as a general who emphasized the importance of reliable information and early preparedness, who so believed in information that he had a personal mapmaker with him at all times, and he details Jackson's many lessons in strategy and leadership. ungekürzt. The Outsider is one of most often published short stories by H. P. Lovecraft, and it has proven to be very popular with both readers and listeners. Lovecraft himself thought that he came near to Poe's style in this story (the first paragraphs are an echo of "Berenice" by E. A. Poe, and the inspiration of "The Masque of Red Death" is also pretty clear). This short story is probably the most elaborate story by Lovecraft, with echoes of his gurus and multifaceted references. The atmosphere is emphasized by actors' performances, music, and the graphics on the cover. Language: English. Narrator: Roy McCrerey. Multiple generations of the same family living under one roof is not a new idea. But what is new is the way architects around the world are re-embracing this form of living, back by increasingly popular demand. While the 20th century experience emphasized a single-family home for the nuclear family and bachelor pads, we are now seeing more tiers of the family unit choosing to live together.Come Together explores the why, the what, the where and, perhaps most importantly, the how of the homes that succeed to be livable for all generational tiers - with designs that are not only architecturally stunning, but balancing private and communal spaces to come together.

Randy Alcorn, best-selling author of The Treasure Principle, makes a clear and compelling case for an under-emphasized scriptural principle: that believers will receive differing rewards in heaven depending on their actions and choices here on earth. In The Law of Rewards, Alcorn shows that we shouldn't serve God just for rewards. It's more important to remember that God's reward system is for His glory, our good, and the good of others. Once we understand God's incentive program, our attitude towards generous living will never be the same. This audiobook explains how our faith determines our eternal destination but our behavior determines our eternal rewards. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Randy Alcorn. John Maynard Keynes (1883-1946) was without question the most influential economist of the twentieth century. His most important work, The General Theory of Employment, Interest, and Money, was published in 1936, and it was widely perceived as offering plausible explanations and solutions for the Great Depression. Keynes suggested that capitalism is vulnerable to instability caused by insufficient consumer demand. He emphasized the reluctance of workers to accept reductions in nominal wages, preventing free market adjustments to unemployment. Based on these and other perceived defects in the capitalist system, Keynes suggested government intervention in the economy, and modern politicians have accepted and applied Keynesian ideas with great enthusiasm. ungekürzt.
