You get what you pay for, right? Not when it comes to health care in America. We pay twice as much as any other developed nation for health care, yet, we have the worst health of them all. If the safety record of American hospitals were transposed onto the airline industry, a fully loaded 747 would crash every other week! And while we pay the highest taxes for health care in the world, tens of thousands of Americans die each year from treatable illness merely because they can’t afford medical care. How did we reach this shameful state? You’ll be shocked to find out not only who’s to blame, but more importantly, how easy the solution can be. In this riveting book, Dr. Joseph Jarvis, MD, examines how our nation’s focus has radically shifted from the disease to the dollar - drastically harming Americans in the process. With unforgettable stories drawn from Dr. Jarvis’s 30-plus years in the medical profession, he gets you thinking about health-care reform in a big way (you’ll never get over the drunk miner who spent the night dipping a dead, rabid bat into every bar patron’s drink!).And through other captivating examples, from brothels to nursing homes, he tells us how poorly the average American understands how to make safe health-care choices in the so-called medical marketplace and how poorly politicians serve as arbiters of what good health policy should be.Most importantly, this book can finally make a difference: Instead of simply pointing fingers and wailing about the outrages, Dr. Jarvis offers a workable solution that can be quickly implemented by each state. Before you finish this book, you’ll get a compelling look at how politicians can offer real solutions and how the American electorate can finally do the right thing in health-system reform: Protect our families, our country, and our future. ungekürzt. Another of Mark Twain's best-selling yarns of skullduggery and mischief. Set in the deep South, Pudd'nhead Wilson is the central character as an attorney who solves a murder mystery and lays bare the wicked deeds of a larger than life ensemble of personalities in his own wry and peculiar way. David Wilson is called “Pudd’nhead” by the townspeople, who fail to understand his combination of wisdom and eccentricity. He redeems himself by simultaneously solving a murder mystery and a case of transposed identities. Two children, a white boy and a mulatto, are born on the same day. Roxy, mother of the mulatto, is given charge of the children; in fear that her son will be sold, she exchanges the babies. The mulatto, though he grows up as a white boy, turns out to be a scoundrel. He sells his mother and murders and robs his uncle. He accuses Luigi, one of a pair of twins, of the murder. Pudd’nhead, a lawyer, undertakes Luigi’s defense. On the basis of fingerprint evidence, he exposes the real murderer, and the white boy takes his rightful place. The book implicitly condemns a society that allows slavery. It concludes with a series of witty aphorisms from Pudd’nhead’s calendar. This book examines the writings of the American novelist Ayn Rand, especially The Fountainhead (1943) and Atlas Shrugged (1957), which Rand considered her definitive statement about the need for an unregulated free market in which superior humans could fully realize themselves by living for no-one but themselves. It explores Rand's conception of American identity, which exalted individualism and capitalism, and her solution for saving the modern American nation, which she believed was losing the spirit of its 18th- and 19th-century founders and frontiersmen, having been degraded morally and economically by the rampant socialism of the mid-20th-century world.Derek Offord crucially goes on to analyse how Rand's writings functioned as a vehicle in which she, a Russian-Jewish writer born in St Petersburg in 1905, engaged with ideas that had long animated the Russian intelligentsia. Her conception of human nature and of a utopian community capable of satisfying its needs; her reversal of conventional valuations of self-sacrifice and selfishness; her division of humans into an extraordinary minority and the ordinary mass; her comparison of competing civilizations - in all these areas, Offord argues that Rand drew on Russian debates and transposed them to a different context. Even the type of novel she writes, the novel of ideas, is informed by the polemical methods and habits of the Russian intelligentsia. The book concludes that her search for a brave new world continues to have topicality in the 21st century, with its populist critiques of liberal democracies and acrimonious debates about countries' moral, social, and economic priorities and their identities, inequalities, and social tensions.

Book three of Mommsen's history covers the 118 years from 264 to 146 BC, the period in which Rome became the undisputed master of the Mediterranean Basin. How did this happen, and why? Carthage was instrumental in this transformation. With the defeat and expulsion of Pyrrhus in 275 BC, Rome had moved to consolidate its hold over the Italian peninsula, a position it had acquired in a century of almost continuous warfare with Italian tribes. But only 11 years later, in 264 BC, the political and commercial rivalry with Carthage over control of Sicily broke out into open war. At the end of two brutal wars with Carthage and three with Macedonia and the Greek Seleucid and Antigonid Kingdoms, the Mediterranean lay in the power of Rome. It was not a power the Roman state had consciously sought. In its fanatical zeal for security, Rome subdued one adversary after the other with unerring determination. In the end there was no one left to subdue. But along with that power came wealth and social changes that were to tear the republic apart. Mommsen's brilliant explanation for how this process of decay sapped the moral fiber of the Roman people is perhaps his most outstanding contribution to our understanding of this era. This is the third in a five-volume series. This volume was recorded entirely on location in Rome, Italy. Listeners may notice some differences in sound compared to our usual studio recordings. Although Mommsen used the AUC system of Roman years, which begins as the Roman year 1 (754 BC), we have transposed these dates to those of the Christian era. All dates are BC except where otherwise indicated. We do not recommend Mommsen for those without a firm grasp of Roman republican history. The work of Cyril Robinson would be a great place to start for the neophyte historian. Translated from the original German by W. P. Dickson. Book four of Mommsen's history covers the period from the middle of the second century BC through the first few decades of the first century BC, about 80 years. It is a sad and woeful tale. By the middle of the second century BC, the city of Rome was spiraling toward bankruptcy and moral decay. The generation which had defeated Hannibal and brought the Mediterranean under Roman control had now passed away, even as gold poured in. Hardly a Roman name of any note appears for half a century. The noble Roman has disappeared. The once feared Roman army has become a mere shadow of its former self, and the public have come to accustom themselves to news of shattering defeats against Spanish and Celtic armies, and of battles in which Romans have thrown down their arms and fled. Not a single trireme was left of the once invincible Roman navy. Meanwhile, the capitalists brought tens of thousands of slaves into Italy, buying up farmland with cheap loans, and driving the yeoman farmer backbone of the old Roman army off the land. This was the situation into which the brothers Tiberius and Gaius Gracchus emerged. Both paid for their attempts at reform with their lives. An oligarchy then ruled with ruthless determination, until the rise of Gaius Marius ushered in an era of unspeakable violence and outright revolution. With Rome's overseas possessions falling away and her Italian allies in open revolt, it would seem that Rome must fall. But the man of the hour proved to be Lucius Cornelius Sulla, and only by his courage and ability was the situation saved. As Sulla entered Rome in 83 BC, the 500-year-old Temple of Jupiter Optimus Maximus on the Capitoline Hill burned to the ground; an ominous portent. Although Mommsen used the A.U.C. system of Roman years, which begins as the Roman year 1 (754 BC), we have transposed these dates to those of the Christian era. All dates are BC except where otherwise indicated. We do not recommend Mommsen for those without ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Charlton Griffin. Harmonx Program Notes: Renaissance Man reflects my interest in the polyphonic music of the 15th and 16th centuries in Europe and effectively demonstrates the contrapuntal possibilities of overtone singing. Notice the apparent independence of the two parts and the use of canonic imitation throughout the work. The second section begins with a strict canon in which the overtone line follows the fundamental line at four beats separation and transposed up a fifth. Midnight is built on a six-note scale. The missing note is the third scale degree, the one that determines whether a scale is major or minor in quality. The title comes from the prescribed time of day for performing Raga Chapghantarava, an Indian raga that employs the same scale. Yokyoku is the Japanese term for vocal music, but the inspiration for this piece comes from music for shakuhachi, the Japanese bamboo flute. A typical Japanese five-note scale is used, and both fundamental and overtone lines are restricted to those five pitches. This limitation creates a stark, austere effect appropriate to a Japanese-influenced aesthetic. The Blues is a two-part realization of the traditional twelve-bar blues progression with a little bit of swing. Tuvan Groovin' was inspired by recordings of contemporary Tuvan throatsingers such as the group Huun-Huur Tu. Several Tuvan vocal techniques are employed, in particular the dotted-rhythm figure, suggestive of horses galloping. Fantasy features harmonic and melodic approaches reminiscent of late 19th-century romantic music, including distantly related chords and keys and the pervasive use of chromaticism. Ballad begins with a simple, folk-like tune, but as the piece progresses, the texture becomes increasingly fragmented and pointillistic while retaining the strict modal harmony. Harmonic Overtures is a work in a more experimental vein. Additional digital effects are employed in the middle of the piece to create complex textures. Variations presents a twist on the traditional set of variations. Instead of developing a given melody, the eight short movements take contrasting approaches to the idea that the overtone line be limited to four pitches (with a couple of exceptions). These four pitches can be produced as overtones on several different fundamental pitches, which provides the needed variety. The title, Goodbye Ravi, is a pun on the name of the Indian raga on which the piece is based, Raga Bhairavi. The keyboard part begins like the tanbura drone in Indian classical music, starting with a single pitch then adding one note at a time until, at the high point of the piece, a chord with all seven notes of the scale is present.

With his 2 CD album 'Klassische Gitarre 2' (2013) the German guitarist Arne Willems presents works from the renaissance up to the 20th century. Disc 1 - classical music for guitar. Works by J. Dowland S. L. Weiss,M. M. Ponce, A. Barrios, and C. Franck This recording is a leading example of the art of guitar playing in the 21st century. Arne Willems´s playing is effortless and always dedicated to the music. His interpretations are based on his studies in music at the prestigious Musikhochschule Cologne and Dusseldorf in Germany. Because of that this recording definitely has a high cultural value. CD1 contains one beautiful duo piece, featuring guitarist Chih-Hsien Tseng from Taiwan. Disc 2: guitar and vocals. The British composer and lutenist John Dowland (1591-1641) wrote the most famouse songs of his time. Three of his songs are a special addition to this fine two CD set. The music by Dowland was not written for the guitar originally. It was necessary to transpose the lute tabulature to the classical guitar. Arne Willems primarily focused on music but also transposed the pieces as close as possible to the original. To maintain a sound that is similar to the lute sound he used strings, that have a higher tension and can bring a brighter sound to the beautiful pieces. Guitar: Antonio Marin - build in 1983, Madrid / Spain. Soprano: Johanna Mühlinghaus from Cologne / Germany. She sings with a wide range of colors and emotions that fit perfectly to the unique kind of sadness in renaissance compositions. About Arne Willems: Arne Willems, born in 1980, recieved his first guitar lessons at the age of seven. 1996 he had won the first price in a popular youth competition. From 2001 to 2005 he studied at Musikhochschule Cologne and graduated with highest marks. 2006 to 2009 he did his Master degree at Robert Schumann Hochschule in Düsseldorf with the international known guitarist Prof. Alexander Sergei Ramirez. 2008 he won the first price at the Yehudi Menuhin competition in Düsseldorf (Germany). 2010-2011 he studied with the Canadian guitarist Prof. Dale Kavanagh (Canada) Concerts brought him to the USA, Asia and Brasil.
