Creature
New and original things are always tough to describe. The urge to classify is comforting, perhaps necessary. Is it chamber-jazz? Or some kind of indie alternative rock? What about new wave improvisation? Frankly, I can't tell you. First and foremost, there is Ila Cantor's guitar. Cantor is a deep guitarist, her pick and strum and pluck equally resonant with classical Spain and hardcore rock, gypsy jazz and the cool touch of masters like Jim Hall. Creature is a strikingly pure guitar album: pure, but definitely not purist. There are effects, electronics. How could there not be, so many decades after Charlie Christian and Jimmy Hendrix and Robert Fripp? True to her moment in the history of the instrument, Cantor makes her guitar speak with a vocabulary replete and plangent, echo and call and foray into the unknown. No less definitive are Cantor's compositions: deliberate, almost stately in their postulation of theme, classical in their restraint - until they turn in sinuous development and break out in meticulous rhythmic discord, progressing not only harmonically but sonically, always coherent and shaped by a craft both measured and luxuriant. Like her guitar Cantor's writing embraces rather than fuses diverse musical forms. It is an unhyphenated music all her own. And then there is Cantor's trio, with Matt Brewer on upright bass and Tommy Crane on drums. The responsiveness - the back and forth of swelling and receding sound and percussive counter-rhythm, the absolutely assured foundation across which Cantor weaves her beguiling motifs and riffs and lines - is thrilling. This is a tight risk-taking trio, an organism that adapts impressively with every sonic bud and bloom. Why Creature? But else what do you call an animal, a living breathing vital thing that as yet has no name? This is indeed living vital emergent music. Before we try to name it, listen.- Shop: odax

Lovelier in Black
2010 - Stimulator is back with a vengeance playing biting ,alternative rock music ,enhanced with heavy electronic grooves and brutally honest lyrics. , Sporting fresh shiny new black locks and her naturally strong candid female presence, Singer Susan Hyatt teams up once again with original Stimulator guitarist/producer/co-songwriter and co-founding member ,Geoff Tyson.  , The result is signature Stimulator with sweeping melodic guitar melodies and world class James Bond style production. The third CD, appropriately entitled 'Lovelier in Black,' showcases Stimulator simply doing what they do best, rocking out with no apologies. Susan plays every inch of the Gothic princess but admits to having more in common with vintage ,PJ Harvey ,than with the blockbuster epic dark popsters Evanessence. , 'I grew up listening to and watching artists like ,David Bowie ,and ,Debbie Harry experiment ,and take artistic chances. ,' It's no surprise that Susan has played with so many different ,musical genres with Stimulator. From wrapping herself up in ,duct tape ,embracing her punk rock and new wave roots crawling around onstage on the WARPED TOUR to playing artsy sophisticated ballads to huge crowds opening Arena Tours with ,Duran Duran ,and the GO-GO's, Stimulator has been on the forefront of reviving new wave rock and roll and classic Disco. 'I think it's really important to always try and reinvent yourself as an artist both musically and visually to stay relevant.' It is this artistic commitment that keeps fans so loyal to Stimulator. When Stimulator's record label, The LAB (distributed by Universal) went defunct in 2006, fans donated their own money and paid for the production and release of the second album. It was that kind of faith that kept the band going even through the roughest times of the music industry. , Stimulator now consists of singer/songwriter Susan Hyatt (London's Grunge Pop-Punksters Pillbox/MP3TV UK TV Host), guitarist and music director Geoff Tyson (T-Ride, ,Snake River Conspiracy), drummer extraordinaire Chad Stewart (Faster Pussycat/Motochrist/Gilby Clarke/LA Guns) and the welcome addition of fresh new bassist Michael Brent Birnholz ( creator of Toldya.com) 'Lovelier in Black' ,explores the dark side of my psyche,' explains Susan. I had just finished my Fitness DVD entitled 'Susan Hyatt's Rockstar Workout,' (charted top 20 in Best Selling Fitness DVDS on Amazon) and I felt I was totally ignoring that "other side" of my personality. In songs like 'Just Be A Man' ,Susan hypocritically sings about the frustration of dating metro-sexual males while 'Me & My RhythmBox' ,celebrates female sexuality. , Stimulator's new CD goes through the whole musical spectrum emotionally and sonically. From complete minimalism ala early Prince to orchestration as elaborate as ELO, that's Stimulator. Unpredictable ,but always stimulating.- Shop: odax

In Defence of the Wild
ABOUT THE ALBUM In July 2010 Padma follows his widely acclaimed debut album Here, released on Just Music in 2008, with sophomore release, In Defence of the Wild. Inspired by Thoreau's Walden, Padma spent the winter of 2008/09 living totally off grid, in a yurt in the mountains of Spain. He kept a blog while he was there, which attracted widespread media attention and saw him interviewed on national radio shows in the UK (BBC Radio 2 and 3). Now living in a cohousing community in Vancouver, his current blog is regularly featured on The Independent (a national UK broadsheet)'s website. In Defence of the Wild is a collection of songs inspired by Padma's time in the yurt. It smells of wood fires and tastes of freedom. If his first album drew comparisons with Nick Drake, the new one is lyrically closer to the mischievous political poetry of an early Bob Dylan. Sonically, Defence draws on a much wider field of influences than Here, while still playing to the natural strengths of his immaculate vocals and sensitive acoustic guitar work. Nick Drake is still in evidence, but this time we can also hear the upbeat skank of Manu Chau and even occasional hints of Sonic Youth can be heard. With songs like 'Consumers of the World, Unite!', 'Route 666' and 'The Bloke Downstairs', Padma pulls no punches in his comments on contemporary culture. The intimacy and warmth that was characteristic of Here is still very much in evidence, albeit this time focused on issues around Padma's love of the wild places of the world, and his pain at the thought of their destruction. Though dealing with difficult subject matter, Defence is neither a judgmental preach-fest, nor an angry political rant. It is an album filled with love, humour and melancholy (and yes okay, a little bit of anger too). Padma says: 'I'm speaking up for the wilderness, because it can't speak up for itself. But I'm also advocating for that which in us - and in society - is still wild. Wild in the sense that it is untainted and untamed by the urbanisation which is sprawling across our world, suffocating our hearts, and causing so many problems for the planet. 'I like the word 'wild' because it represents a direct challenge to authority and control from outside. This has been a big part of the problem. Some people think of being 'wild' as being without concern or responsibility - like a spoilt celebrity teenager. But for me, wild suggests a natural and heartfelt morality based on true freedom, and a direct connection with both our own nature, and the Earth itself.' Although Padma only arrived in Vancouver in 2009, very quickly he has found himself at the heart of the Vancouver music scene. After seeing Padma's first Canadian show, Lauren Eldridge of Backstage Vancouver agreed to manage him. T.Nile - winner of the Canadian Music Award for Best Emerging Singer-Songwriter - adds her honeyed tones to exert a considerable presence on the album. Other contributors include organist Andy Taylor from UK-based psych-frontiersmen The Dials, and Stefano Reali of Rome's Happy Never After. ABOUT PADMA Padma was born in Sheffield, in the north of England. He likes to move around and currently lives between Vancouver Canada, the UK, and a yurt in the Spanish Pyrenees. He has been a practising Buddhist for 15 years. In 2005, after surviving a near-fatal brain haemorrhage, he decided to leave the city in favour of a more natural environment. He built a yurt and headed for the mountains of Spain. Padma's debut album Here was produced by Holy McGrail (synth and fx for Slomo, Julian Cope, Sunn0))) ). It was released on UK indie label Just Music in 2008. Here received some excellent reviews and Padma played sessions and was interviewed on BBC Radio 2 and 3, as well as touring the UK. Song for an Entryphone, the second single from Here, was Julian Lennon's Pick of the Week for Below Zero - a California radio station. It was also used in the soundtrack of the award-winning film Bigboy_74, which was shown on MTV. In 2008/09, Padma spent his second winter in the yurt. Inspired by Thoreau's Walden, he kept a weekly blog, sharing his experience of life on the mountain and his reflections on society. It was during this period that the songs for In Defence of the Wild were written or conceived. Padma currently lives in a cohousing community in Vancouver.- Shop: odax

Show Must Go On
'The show must go on' (SEED CD 016) is Sean Wayland's new piano trio CD recorded in New York with his long standing acoustic trio of Jochen Rueckert (drums) and Matt Penman (bass). This trio has been performing and recording in New York and worldwide for over 10 years. This CD follows on from previous trio CDs"Colossus of Rhodes' (DIW label), 'Lurline' (Seed). The trio also was featured on Sean's CD "Expensive Habit'. The music is mostly swinging and features a large number of cover tunes mixed with Sean's distinctive compositions. Highlights include a version of 'Strawberry Fields Forever" by the Beatles and a version of Australian Saxophonist Bernie McGann tune "D-day" which is based on the chord progression to ' My Secret Love". Also included is Sean's readapting of standard jazz vehicles Giant Steps and Rhythm Changes which are infused with his own personal brand of rhythm and harmony . As a sonic change the last 2 tracks feature Sean's adept use of electronics and synthesizers. Overall it's a sunny swinging CD with familiar sounds and tradition mixed with new ideas. It's beautifully recorded by engineer Aya Takemura at New York's top studios Avatar and Sear Sound which both have excellent Steinway pianos. The album is sonically very pleasing recording live to 2-track digital. As always Matt Penman and Jochen Rueckert provide excellent support, musicianship, and creativity. The trio continues to develop an original, swinging approach to group interplay.- Shop: odax

Hejira
Hejira was recorded by the band during the fall and winter months of 2004/2005, and was mixed by Colin Stewart of the Hive at Vogville studio. The CD includes an array of eclectic original songs featuring richly layered and intricate arrangements. The new album is a follow-up to Hejira's first release, 'How to Land,' a five-song EP released in 2003. In 2002, Matthew McDaniel, Jeff Mettlewsky, and brothers Joel and Tim Rich met through mutual friends of bands in the local Vancouver music scene. Over the course of several writing sessions, the four recognized that the diversity of using instruments such as analog synthesizers, keyboards and guitars would become a focal point for the development of their songs. It was at this time that the band also made efforts to explore their own original form. Having the comfort to explore an entirely new set of songs at their own pace, the band entered the studio to record their first full-length album in winter, 2004. Their self-titled debut is sonically rich and is supported by well-crafted melodies and arrangements by the band. The recording contains dissonant moments driven by angular guitars, and also more spacious and atmospheric songs such as 'Lofty Towers'. In support of their release, Hejira is touring western Canada in the summer of 2005, with plans for the west coast during the fall. The band seeks to continue developing it's audience while maintaining roots in musical experimentation.- Shop: odax

51 Strings
'It is a glorious and almost unfathomable truth that it only takes 51 strings (four on the violin and 47 on the harp) to produce immensely beautiful music. While violin soloists often have a piano or an entire orchestra to serve as accompanist, the lone harp in the Kent / Shulman Duo does a fantastic job of uplifting and supporting her counterpart in a more sonically unique fashion. Violinist Peter Kent and harpist Amy Shulman have played extensively apart and as a duo worldwide for a number of years. Both imbibe a true appreciation for the music they play and that sensitivity is evident in each piece. Throughout '51 Strings' the violin takes the lead melody with it's resonance and sustain qualities while the harp becomes the delicate percussive instrument keeping each piece flowing while hopefully getting a brief shining moment to run through a glissando. The opening number is Camille Saint-Saëns' "Fantaisie," which runs seamlessly through a series of different moods with each episode ebbing with the violin rubatto and then urged along by the harp. Both instruments have exquisite tone and sound most impressive in the higher registers at quiet dynamic levels. Kent and Shulman form an excellent musical team by intertwining their respective strings in a matched timbre. Continuing in the impressionist style with a more ethnomusicology flair, the duo performs Manuel de Falla's "Spanish Dance No. 1" from the opera La Vide Breve. After expertly plucking along the Latin countryside, the duo journey to the English moors with a masterful arrangement of Ralph Vaughan Williams' "The Lark Ascending." The succulent, passionate tune captures the air of rural life in the British Isles, similar to the composer's "Six Studies in English Folksong" for cello and piano, however the combination of violin and harp is sweeter. Jumping back to the European mainland is French composer Jules Massenet's sensual "Méditation" from the opera Thaïs displaying beautiful harmonics. In classical music there is no one more perfect than Johánn Sebastian Bach. These two stellar musicians perform the third and fourth movements from his Violin Sonata in E Major, the "Adagio" and "Allegro" respectively. The final selections on this wonderfully diverse album are from the 20th century Russian composer Dmitri Shostakovich. Two preludes are featured originally written for piano from his 24 Preludes, Op. 34. The first is a jumpy, humorous piece in A-flat Major with the harp carrying the left hand piano part adroitly as the violin jovially takes the melody. In the second, a musically inclined ear may pick up a snippet of the main theme from Gustav Mahler's Fifth Symphony in C-sharp minor. Lastly, rich in traditional Soviet drama and melancholy is "Romance" from the film The Gadfly. '51 Strings' not only demonstrates a more unique and aurally pleasing pairing of instruments but it also boasts a diverse assortment of musical styles sure to please any classical music lovers palette.' Review by: Kelly O'Neil Rating: 5 stars (out of 5) 'Peter Kent and Amy Shulman are each accomplished artists unto themselves. Harpist Amy Shulman, a graduate of Juilliard, has performed with numerous orchestral, chamber and contemporary music groups. She has also been heard in motion pictures, on television and on recordings by such greats as Frank Sinatra, Placido Domingo and Aretha Franklin. Violinist Peter Kent is a concertmaster in several orchestras in the Los Angeles area, and has performed on recordings by artists such as Michael Feinstein, Fiona Apple, Mariah Carey, Cracker and Shirley Horn. Beginning in 1982, the pair formed the Kent/Shulman duo, and has toured nationally to critical and popular praise. In 2012, the Kent/Shulman duo released their debut album 51 Strings. 51 Strings strikes it's first chord with Camille Saint-Saens' 'Fantaisie', a beautiful marriage of harp and violin that is subtly cast and sublime. Kent creates a beautiful framework from through which Kent's violin may dance. 'Spanish Dance No. 1' (Manuel de Falla) is a delightful turn, full of amazing energy and brilliant rhythmic counterpoints between Kent and Shulman. In contrast, the lyric beauty of Ralph Vaughan Williams' 'The Lark Ascending' is absolutely breathtaking, with Shulman providing subtle textures to highlight Kent's soaring melody lines. Johann Sebastian Bach gets fair time with "Adagio" and "Allegro". 'Adagio' mixes texture and lyricism, with each player carving out their own musical geography. There are moments of simple grace blending into sublime beauty here that captivate the listener's attention. Kent and Shulman build their resolutions slowly, leaving listeners on the very edges if their seats. 'Allegro' is a much more manic experience, with Kent bowing his way through undulating lines. 'Thais Meditation' (Jules Massenet) is contemplative and sweet, with a quiet vibrancy running underneath. The violin lines here are nothing short of gorgeous, most especially the high resolution with about 30 seconds to go. 'Berceuse' (Gabriel Fauré) finds Shulman as the perpetual 'yes, and' in a vibrant story told on four strings. It's a moment of beauty almost perfect in it's nature and mien. ?? Kent and Shulman close things out with three numbers from Dmitri Shostakovich. 'Prelude No. 1' plays off a vaguely Middle Eastern theme but quickly moves to a more classic Italian sound. The violin is vibrant here, while the harp is the glue that holds everything together. 'Prelude No. 2' is 93 seconds of quiet grace in song, with a subtle melody line that dances and lilts as if it were the air itself. Kent and Shulman close with 'Romance', with the harp marking off time as Kent tells a love story on violin. Peter Kent and Amy Shulman don't have much to prove at this point. As musicians they are acknowledged as some of the finest in their respective crafts. Yet on 51 Strings they find a way to move together beyond simple mastery into fine art. The ability to play notes with precision and a certain amount of grace is the mark of a master. The ability to breathe life through your instrument into a composition and bring it to life is the mark of an artisan. Both Kent and Shulman exhibit that ability in significant measure on 51 Strings. This is pure chamber music, much too expressive and full of life to ever be relegated to the background.' Review by: Wildy Haskell Rating: 4.5 Stars (Out of 5)? An excellent album this. Violinist Peter Kent and harpist Amy Shulman have put together a varied and colorful program that plays to the strengths of their unusual combination of instruments. Musical variety is achieved through subtle gradations of dynamics, and through a wide range of tone colors. Peter Kent is clearly a versatile violinist, and he knows exactly the tone to go for to complement the harp. Amy Shulman is also capable of varying her timbre as the music demands, through differing percussive levels in her attack, and by allowing the reverberation of the strings to overlap and mix into each other's harmonics. Most of the works on the program are arrangements, but the first piece, Saint-Saëns' Fantaisie, is a violin and harp original. And what a wonderful piece it is. The composer makes adventurous use of the harp, employing it as a full duo partner and never as mere accompaniment. His use of repeated note effects is particularly effective, as are his endlessly varied broken chords. And most importantly of all, he conjures some magical melodies, ideally suited to both instruments. In Manuel de Falla's Spanish Dance No. 1, the harp takes the role of the flamenco guitar, providing the ideal Iberian flavor and gentle propulsion throughout. The Lark Ascending is well-known in a wide range of settings and transcriptions, but the advantage of the harp here is that the violin does not have to compete to be heard. Even in it's original orchestral form, the piece presents a paradox: how can the soloist float on the breeze when the orchestral backing dem- Shop: odax

Tenderheart, is his much anticipated sophomore LP. The 13-track collection of originals was recorded in the San Fernando Valley and co-produced by Outlaw alongside Martin Pradler. Outlaw enlisted many of the same musicians that made his first album, 2015 s Angeleno, an undisputed breakthrough and one of the best-reviewed debuts of that year: harmony singer Molly Jenson, pedal steel pro Jeremy Long and guitarist Danny Garcia, along with Taylor Goldsmith (Dawes) and Bo Koster (My Morning Jacket). In addition, Tenderheart features local mariachi group Erwin Vasquez and Mariachi Teocuitatlan. Outlaw offers an extraordinary refinement of the artistic identity laid out on Angeleno . Sonically, the album elaborates on his SoCal Country sound: a sun-bleached, Baja-influenced twang that deftly points to country s neo-traditionalists and LA s legendary singer-songwriters. Thematically, Tenderheart is a thesis on self-discovery and the power of love - Outlaw meditates on his own conflicted quest for peace amidst the chaos of his chosen path. TRACKS: 1.
