The Roots of Violence: Why Humans Are Not by Nature Violent: Essays on Law, Policy, and Psychiatry, Volume 10 , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 191min
The Roots of Violence: Why Humans Are Not by Nature Violent (Essays on Law, Policy and Psychiatry, Vol. 10, 2018) is an analytical and policy study that presents abundant evidence that human beings are not by nature violent and that violence therefore is a conditioned response. The scientific disciplines examined are anthropology, biology, neurology, pedagogy, psychoanalysis, and sociology. The auidobook shows the historical development of the roots of violence as they sprang forth from the patriarchal murder cultures that were putting an end to the peaceful matriarchal empires such as the Minoan civilization in Crete. To begin with, anthropological research by Bronislaw Malinowski and Margaret Mead in Polynesia shows how a truly peaceful matriarchal cultures is permissive in their child-rearing paradigm, giving children ample space for exploring their bodies and their sexual attractions to peers, while adults stay out of that space entirely. Biological research conducted by Ashley Montagu with rhesus shows how important tactile stimulation is for the young and how early tactile deprivations leaves scares in the psyche in the form of a messed-up relational code. Furthermore, the research by neurologist Herbert James Campbell delivered evidence for the fact that all human endeavor is based upon pleasure, while later on, neuropsychologist James W. Prescott showed how pleasure and violence are mutually exclusive, which means that when pleasure, sexual, tactile, or other, is repressed, violence comes up in the brain as an "alternative conditioned response". Based on the research being on the table, the author draws policy conclusions for the prevention of violence both in the social and the educational domain. ungekürzt. Language: English. The Backslider , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 832min
Recognized as a Mormon classic 20 years after its release, The Backslider features longstanding Christian conflicts played out in a scenic, sparsely populated area of Southern Utah. A young ranch hand, Frank Windham, conceives of God as an implacable enemy of human appetite. He is a dedicated sinner until family tragedy catapults him into an arcane form of penitence preached among frontier Mormons. He is saved by an epiphany that has proved controversial among readers, either interpreting it as an extreme impiety or celebrating it as a moving and entirely plausible rendering of a biblical theme in a Western setting.Frank comes into contact with a host of rural and urban characters. Of central importance is his Lutheran girlfriend, Marianne, whom Frank seduces, begrudgingly marries, and eventually loves. Frank’s extended family is just a generation removed from polygamy and still energized by old-time grudges and deprivations. Along the way, Frank encounters a closeted secular humanist, a polygamist prophet, a psychiatrist, a mason, government employees, college professors, lawyers, and entrepreneurs - all drawn with heightened realism reminiscent of Charles Dickens or the grotesque forms of William Faulkner and Flannery O’Connor. The story engages listeners as it alternates almost imperceptibly between Frank’s naive consciousness and the more informed awareness of its narrator. It can be listened to as a love story, a satiric comedy, or a dark and sobering study of self-mutilation. Shifting from one to another, it builds suspense and elicits complex emotions, among them a profound sense of compassion. More joyous than cynical, it sympathizes deeply with the plight of all of God’s backsliders. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Charles Kahlenberg. Somewhere Inside , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 616min
One Sister’s Captivity in North Korea and the Other’s Fight to Bring Her Home On March 17, 2009, Laura Ling and her colleague Euna Lee were working on a documentary about North Korean defectors who were fleeing the desperate conditions in their homeland. While filming on the Chinese/North Korean border, they were chased down by North Korean soldiers who violently apprehended them. Laura and Euna were charged with trespassing and "hostile acts", and imprisoned by Kim Jong Il's notoriously secretive Communist state. Kept totally apart, they endured months of interrogations and eventually a trial before North Korea's highest court. They were the first Americans ever to be sentenced to 12 years of hard labor in a prison camp in North Korea. When news of the arrest reached Laura's sister, journalist Lisa Ling, she immediately began a campaign to get her sister released, one that led her from the State Department to the higher echelons of the media world and eventually to the White House. Somewhere Inside reveals for the first time Laura's gripping account of what really happened on the river, her treatment at the hands of North Korean guards, and the deprivations and rounds of harrowing interrogations she endured. Told in the sisters' alternating voices, Somewhere Inside is a timely, inspiring tale of survival set against the canvas of international politics that goes beyond the headlines to reveal the impact on lives engulfed by forces beyond their control. But it is also a window into the unique bond these two sisters have always shared, a bond that sustained them throughout the most horrifying ordeal of their lives. ungekürzt. Language: English. American Legends: The Life of Helen Keller , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 60min
Most people measure their happiness in terms of physical pleasure and material possession. Could they win some visible goal which they have set on the horizon, how happy they could be! Lacking this gift or that circumstance, they would be miserable. If happiness is to be so measured, I who cannot hear or see have every reason to sit in a corner with folded hands and weep. If I am happy in spite of my deprivations, if my happiness is so deep that it is a faith, so thoughtful that it becomes a philosophy of life, - if, in short, I am an optimist, my testimony to the creed of optimism is worth hearing. - Helen Keller A lot of time has been spent covering the lives of history's most influential figures, but how much of the forest is lost for the trees? In Charles River Editors' American Legends series, listeners can get caught up on the lives of America's most important men and women in the time it takes to finish a commute. And they can do so while learning interesting facts long forgotten or never known. To say Helen Keller is one of the most unique figures in American history would be an understatement. As a young child, Helen lost both her vision and hearing, leaving her deaf and blind: an almost hopelessly debilitating condition that left her literally trapped, unable to communicate with anyone. As she would later write, "My life was without past or future; death, the pessimist would say, 'a consummation devoutly to be wished'". Nobody would have blamed her for being hopelessly frustrated and imprisoned by her disabilities; in fact, that was to be expected. When her famous teacher, Anne Sullivan, brought Helen a doll and tried to teach her a few words by spelling them into her hand, the child became so frustrated that she broke the doll. ungekürzt. The Final Mission of Bottoms Up: A World War II Pilot's Story, American Military Experience Series , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 677min
On November 18, 1944, the end of the war in Europe finally in sight, American co-pilot Lieutenant Lee Lamar struggled alongside pilot Randall Darden to keep Bottoms Up, their B-24J Liberator, in the air. They and their crew of eight young men had believed the intelligence officer who, at the pre-dawn briefing at their base in southern Italy, confided that their mission that day would be a milk run. However, that twenty-first mission out of Italy would be their last. Bottoms Up was staggered by an anti-aircraft shell that sent it plunging three miles earthward, the pilots recovering control at just 5,000 feet. With two engines out, they tried to make it to a tiny strip on a British-held island in the Adriatic Sea and in desperation threw out everything not essential to flight: machine guns, belts of ammunition, flak jackets. But over Pula in what is now Croatia, they were once more hit by German fire, and the focus quickly became getting out of the doomed bomber. Seemingly unable to extricate himself, Lee Lamar all but surrendered to death before fortuitously bailing out. He was captured the next day and spent the rest of the war as a prisoner at a Stalag on the Baltic Sea, suffering the deprivations of little food and the coldest winter in Europe in a century. He never saw most of his crew again. Then, in 2006, more than sixty years after these life-changing experiences, Lamar received an email from Croatian archaeologist Luka Bekic who had discovered the wreckage of Bottoms Up. A veteran of the Balkan Wars of the 1990s, Bekic felt compelled to find out the crews' identities and fates. Lee Lamar, a boy from a hardscrabble farm in rural, northwestern Missouri, had gone to college on the GI Bill, became a civil engineer, got married, and raised a family. Yet, for all the opportunity that stemmed from his wartime service, part of him was lost. The prohibition on asking prisoners-of-war their memories during the repatriation process prevented him from reconci ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Gary Regal.
