Free Refills is the harrowing tale of a Harvard-trained medical doctor run horribly amok through his addiction to prescription medication and his recovery. Dr. Peter Grinspoon seemed to be a total success: a Harvard-educated MD with a thriving practice; married with two great kids and a gorgeous wife; a pillar of his community. But lurking beneath the thin veneer of having it all was an addict fueled on a daily boatload of prescription meds. When the police finally came calling - after a tip from a sharp-eyed pharmacist - Grinspoon's house of cards came tumbling down fast. His professional ego turned out to be an impediment to getting clean as he cycled through recovery to relapse, his reputation, family life, and lifestyle in ruins. What finally moves him to recover and reclaim life - including working with other physicians who themselves are addicts - makes for inspiring listening. ungekürzt. Language: English. Author, academic, and adventurer, Denise Inge grew up in a large and rambunctious family on the east coast of America. She crossed the Sahara, charmed snakes in Marrakech and cycled the Adirondack mountains, but her latest adventure is an interior one. It starts with the discovery that her house is built on a crypt full of human skeletons. Facing her fear of these strangers' bones takes her to other charnel houses in Europe and on a journey into the meaning of bones themselves. This exploration, though it began before her diagnosis with an inoperable sarcoma, takes on a new significance when the question of living well in the face of mortality abruptly ceases to be hypothetical. A Tour of Bones is a passionate testament to the conviction that living is more than not dying, and that contemplating mortality is not about being prepared to die but about being prepared to live. ungekürzt. We’ve been tantalised by the idea of eternal youth since time immemorial. We’re always asking how we can live longer and better. Or, to put it another way, why can’t we all be like Madame Calment, who cycled till she was 100, smoked till she was 117 and died at the wonderfully old age of 122? Join veteran reporter Bill Gifford for a rip-roaring ride along the trail to the fountain of youth. Meet the scientists who have doubled the life expectancy of mice by knocking out a single gene and others, like Aubrey De Grey, who says our children could go on to live for 1,000 years or maybe 5,000. An intoxicating mixture of deep reporting, fascinating science, and prescriptive takeaway, Spring Chicken will reveal the extraordinary breakthroughs that may yet bring us eternal youth while exposing dangerous deceptions that prey on the innocent and ignorant. PLEASE NOTE: When you purchase this title, the accompanying reference material will be available in your My Library section along with the audio. ungekürzt. Language: English. Why take the shortest, most direct route through life, when you could choose the wiggliest, most mountainous one possible?Armed with a limited grasp of Spanish and determined to meet as many Lamas as possible, Anna and her friend Faye set off on a six-month journey along the spine of the largest mountain range in the world - the Andes.Beginning in the bustling city of La Paz, the duo pedal south - through dense jungle, across pristine white salt flats and past towering volcanoes, following the path of thundering glacial rivers to the snow-tipped peaks of Patagonia.Sleeping wild in their tents most nights, they endure 50-mph crosswinds and catastrophic crashes, and go head to head with one very determined saddle sore called Sally. By the time they make it to the southernmost tip of the continent, they have cycled 5,500 miles and ascended over 100,000 metres through the mighty Andes - equivalent to 11 times the height of Everest.Told from the seat of Anna's bicycle, Llama Drama is a witty and compelling account of life at its rawest and most rich. For anyone who has ever wanted to journey through the stunning natural landscapes of South America - this story is for you. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Anna McNuff. Since the invention of the bicycle, people have raced them. The advent of the pneumatic tyre meant that these races could take place on any road in any country - cycle road racing was born. In just over a century the Tour de France has become the most watched sporting event, and the Giro d’Italia, Vuela d’Espagne and Spring Classics are expanding to fill the entire year with competitions which are watched by millions of fans, and the routes are cycled by hundreds of thousands of amateurs keen to discover what it is like to ride 200 arduous kilometres in one day, in some cases over the steepest of routes. Intertwined with these competitions is the history and, most importantly, the characters who have graced the road cycling stage. Merckx, Indurain, Coppi, Pantani, Binda, Rominger and Hinault are names that have been raised to mythical status.  The Call of the Road reveals the epic battles of all of the racing seasons since the first Tour de France, looking beyond the results to see the drama - not just on the road but within the teams and between individuals - and the politics and scandal that continue to fascinate cycle road race fans everywhere. ungekürzt. One woman's remarkable odyssey from tragedy to prison to recovery - and recognition as a leading figure in the national justice reform movement. Susan Burton's world changed in an instant when her five-year-old son was killed by a van driving down their street. Consumed by grief and without access to professional help, Susan self-medicated, becoming addicted first to cocaine then to crack. As a resident of South Los Angeles, a Black community under siege in the War on Drugs, it was but a matter of time before Susan was arrested. She cycled in and out of prison for over 15 years; never was she offered therapy or treatment for addiction. On her own, she eventually found a private drug rehabilitation facility. Once clean, Susan dedicated her life to supporting women facing similar struggles. Her organization, A New Way of Life, operates five safe homes in Los Angeles that supply a lifeline to hundreds of formerly incarcerated women and their children - setting them on the track to education and employment rather than returning to prison. Becoming Ms. Burton not only humanizes the deleterious impact of mass incarceration, it also points the way to the kind of structural and policy changes that will offer formerly incarcerated people the possibility of lives of meaning and dignity.  ungekürzt. Ugo Rondinone's Sun paintings are reproduced at unprecedented scale in a display-worthy elephant folio, published in a signed limited edition of 250 copies. New York-based, Swiss-born conceptual artist Ugo Rondinone's Sun paintings are among his most celebrated series. Begun in 1992 and spanning three decades, the Sun works reflect Rondinone's interests in nineteenth-century German Romanticism and Tibetan mysticism as vehicles to explore natural phenomena and interior states. Rondinone began the sun series by directing his gaze inward (a counterpoint to his contemporaneous plein air works), translating his emotional state to circular bands of watercolor on paper. To create distance between these diaristic studies and the viewer, Rondinone then altered the media and scale: expanding the Suns to more than seven feet in diameter and exchanging tremulous watercolor for seamless airbrush. Maintaining a consistent form and naming strategy-the German date of the work-Rondinone cycled through more than 370 color combinations, ranging from strong contrasts to barely perceptible shifts. Sometimes referred to as mandala works, the Sun paintings fill the viewer's field of vision with pulsing color. At 19 x 23 inches, this elephant folio creates an intense optical experience at close range. Complete with reproductions of all 219 large works and 154 smaller canvases and prints, Ugo Rondinone: The Sun will be the most comprehensive source on the series to date.

In 1939 British cyclist Tommy Godwin cycled 75,065 miles in a single year. Think about that for a second: it’s an average of over 200 miles each day. And it’s a mark that still stands after almost 80 years. In The Year, Dave Barter resurrects the legend of the year record - a challenge nearly as old as bicycles themselves - and the cyclists who pushed themselves to establish and break it.Barter uncovers the stories behind these riders who would routinely cycle over a hundred miles a day in the race to set new records. Americans such as John H. George who recorded over 200 "centuries", 19 double "centuries" and three triple "centuries" in the late 1800s. The British advertising executive Harry Long, whose annual tallies of over 20,000 miles in the early 20th century led to the founding of the formal cycling year record and Cycling magazine’s Century Competition. The Englishman of French descent, Marcel Planes, whose 1911 record of 34,666 miles stood for over 20 years. Not forgetting the legends of the job-seeking Arthur Humbles, the one-armed vegetarian communist Walter Greaves, the "keep-fit girl" Billie Dovey and the staggering mark set by Godwin who left a youthful Bernard Bennett trailing in his wake.Meticulous research through the annuals, archives and news stories of the bicycling world is backed up with insights from the families of these legendary cyclists, as well as Dave’s own analysis of the riders’ years in numbers. There is no more difficult challenge in cycling. The Year is the definitive story of these phenomenal cyclists. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Saethon Williams.
