If Joe and Vicky had known what relocating to a tiny mountain village in Andalucía would really be like, they might have hesitated.  They can have no idea of the culture shock in store for them...no idea they'll become reluctant chicken farmers and own the most dangerous cockerel in Spain...no idea they'll help capture a vulture and be rescued by a mule.  Will they stay, or will they return to the relative sanity of England? ungekürzt. Henry VIII has proclaimed himself Supreme Head of the Church, and the country is waking up to savage new laws, rigged trials, and the greatest network of informers ever seen. Under the order of Thomas Cromwell, a team of commissioners is sent through the country to investigate the monasteries. There can only be one outcome: the monasteries are to be dissolved. But on the Sussex coast, at the monastery of Scarnsea, events have spiralled out of control. Cromwell's commissioner, Robin Singleton, has been found dead, his head severed from his body. His horrific murder is accompanied by equally sinister acts of sacrilege: a black cockerel sacrificed on the alter, and the disappearance of Scarnsea's Great Relic. Matthew Shardlake, lawyer and long-time supporter of reform, has been sent by Cromwell into this atmosphere of treachery and death. But Shardlake's investigation soon forces him to question everything he hears and everything that he intrinsically believes. Language: English. Narrator: Anton Lesser. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's detective genius, Sherlock Holmes, came to NBC radio in 1930 with Richard Gordon playing the legendary sleuth. By 1939 Basil Rathbone was heard as Holmes, with Nigel Bruce as Doctor Watson. The duo was simultaneously starring in a popular series of Sherlock Holmes features for Twentieth Century Fox and later for Universal Studios. By the end of the mid-1940s, Rathbone was eager to separate himself from the radio show to avoid being typecast. Though the show's sponsor offered him generous pay to continue, he decided to move on. Tom Conway then took over the role, with Nigel Bruce continuing as Watson. Conway and Bruce were replaced in 1947 by John Stanley and Alfred Shirley. Others to portray Holmes and Watson during the radio program's run were George Shelton and Ian Martin and Ben Wright and Eric Snowden. In 1955, NBC signed heavyweights John Gielgud and Sir Ralph Richards onto star as Holmes and Watson, but with radio quickly giving way to television, it lasted only one season. This collection contains 12 amazing Sherlock Holmes adventures, starring Tom Conway and Nigel Bruce. Episodes include: "The Clue of the Hungry Cat", "The Adventure of the Original Hamlet", "The Singular Affair of the Dying Schoolboys", "The Adventure of the Genuine Guarnarius", "The Adventure of the Sally Martin", "The Strange Death of Mrs. Abernetty", "The Adventure of the Half-Eaten Apple, the Coptic Compass, and the Unclothed Corpse", "The Adventure of the Elusive Emerald", "The Adventure of the Grand Old Man", "The Singular Affair of the White Cockerel", "The Darlington Substitution Case", and "The Singular Affair of the Babbling Butler". Packed with colourful maps, paintings and captivating stories, the reader is taken on a compelling tour of the geography, history and supernatural populations of the afterworlds of cultures around the globe.Whether it's the thirteen heavens of the Aztecs, the Chinese Taoist netherworld of 'hungry ghosts', or the 'Hell of the Flaming Rooster' of Japanese Buddhist mythology (in which sinners are tormented by an enormous fire-breathing cockerel), The Devil's Atlas gathers together a wonderful variety of beliefs and representations of life after death. These afterworlds are illustrated with an unprecedented collection of images, ranging from the marvellous 'infernal cartography' of the European Renaissance artists attempting to map the structured Hell described by Dante and the decorative Islamic depictions of Paradise to the various efforts to map the Garden of Eden and the spiritual vision paintings of nineteenth-century mediums. The Devil's Atlas accompanies beautiful images with a highly readable trove of surprising facts and narratives, from the more inventive torture methods awaiting sinners, to colourful eccentric catalogues of demons, angels and assorted death deities.
