This is Bj Kocen's first solo recording with material written as recent as 2009 back to the early 90's. With vocals and harmony up front, this album covers major musical territory and beyond. There's a refreshing mix of blues, pop,laid back funk, and contemporary folk which adds up to one solid song cycle. Stand out tracks include,'I don't want to go down there', 'Joel's Miracle' and the title track, 'Those are the Breaks' which begins catchy enough and grows into one sincerely groovy track. Devon Sproule who performs a duet with BJ on the track, 'The Sudden Move', describes Kocen's songwriting as, ' honest, open-hearted, and musically accomplished.' It's true that BJ tends to pay tribute to friends and family but he also likes to spin a good yarn like the only psychiatrist on the Island of St. John, 'Harry'. Fans of International touring artist Paul Curreri will truly enjoy this album as his influence can be clearly heard throughout the recording as well as his musicianship. Curreri produced, arranged, and performed on the majority of the record. Confidence was high for BJ and Paul on this project as they even threw on the album a 15 minute comedy improv, 'Director's Commentary'. Bj Kocen has been described as sounding reminiscent of Paul Simon, Tracy Chapman, James Taylor, and even The Decemberists. Certainly BJ has been informed by all of the above but like most singer songwriters, his antennae is tuned into popular musicians, his family, friends, and of course Whale Mating Calls.
