The definitive account of Lance Armstrong's spectacular rise and fall. In June 2013, when Lance Armstrong fled his palatial home in Texas, downsizing in the face of multimillion-dollar lawsuits, Juliet Macur was there - talking to his girlfriend and children and listening to Armstrong's version of the truth. She was one of the few media members aside from Oprah Winfrey to be granted extended one-on-one access to the most famous pariah in sports. At the center of Cycle of Lies is Armstrong himself, revealed through face-to-face interviews. But this unfolding narrative is given depth and breadth by the firsthand accounts of more than 100 witnesses, including family members whom Armstrong had long since turned his back on - the adoptive father who gave him the Armstrong name, a grandmother, an aunt. Perhaps most damning of all is the taped testimony of the late J. T. Neal, the most influential of Armstrong's many father figures, recorded in the final years of Neal's life as he lost his battle with cancer just as Armstrong gained fame for surviving the disease. In the end, it was Armstrong's former friends, those who had once occupied the precious space of his inner circle, who betrayed him. They were the ones who dealt Armstrong his fatal blow by breaking the code of silence that shielded the public from the grim truth about the sport of cycling - and the grim truth about its golden boy, Armstrong. Threading together the vivid and disparate voices of those with intimate knowledge of the private and public Armstrong, Macur weaves a comprehensive and unforgettably rich tapestry of one man's astonishing rise to global fame and fortune and his devastating fall from grace. ungekürzt. Did you ever have a great boss? Everyone should have one, but not enough people do. If you're a boss, or hope to become one, or have a less-than-great boss, then this is the book that could change your career-and your life. In times like these, being a great boss can be harder than ever. If you want surprising and useful advice on how to handle the tough stuff (from having to fire a long-time employee to being a new boss with a demoralized team) the stories, observations, and advice contained in this gem of a book will set your feet in the right direction. And if you just want advice on living up to the legend who preceded you in the job, or even ways to emulate someone who was a great boss to you, Jeffrey Fox has gathered anecdotes from some of the mightiest and most respected bosses in America. The bestselling author who brought you How to Become CEO and How to Become a Rainmaker knows the territory about which he speaks. Fox is the master of the counterintuitive angle. For every boss who has implied "I know what's best, that's why I'm the boss," Fox counsels, "Listen to Phonies, Fools, and Frauds" and "Don't Check Expense Accounts." His stories from bosses who have cared equally for employees' lives and the bottom line will inspire you to see that profit counts, but so do camaraderie, motivation, and a great place to work. In a time of considerable corporate downsizing, it's more important than ever for bosses to surround themselves with motivated employees. Jeffrey Fox's newest volume will have a place on the shelves of top brass everywhere who want to remain leaders of their pack. Language: English. Narrator: Jeffrey J. Fox. Markets go up; markets go down. Yet over the long haul, stocks still are better investments than bonds. If you’re investing for retirement, your children’s education, or simply for personal gain, the challenge is to become a long-term investor amid short-term market fluctuations. And the key to lasting success is identifying future trends today to maximize tomorrow’s investment returns. Dr. Bob Froehlich, Vice Chairman and Chief Investment Strategist of Scudder Investments and one of the most trusted advisors in the financial community, shares his vast knowledge of the global economic landscape to provide you with a practical guide to finding tomorrow’s financial opportunities today. According to Froehlich, spotting broad economic themes allows you to identify sectors that are poised for growth in the next decade and beyond. In Where the Money Is, he identifies five dominant global trends that will shape the long-term direction of the financial markets: Demographic trends around the world The globalization of economies and markets The technology revolution and higher productivity The worldwide shift toward government downsizing and privatization Mergers and acquisitions and their effects on the size, shape, and form of companies By identifying themes that will drive the market and the specific industries likely to benefit as well as providing tools such as Sectornomics, a strategy of investing in sectors rather than individual companies, Where the Money Is gives investors every chance to conquer the uneven investment terrain. Froehlich gives you the vision to see what tomorrow will bring so that you can find where the money is today and where it will be in the future. Language: English. Narrator: Grover Gardner. PROMOTE! is about you and your future. It is about personal promotion on the job. It is about getting the promotion and the raise and keeping your job in the age of downsizing. PROMOTE! is about having the confidence to directly address your accomplishments with those who control your destiny on the job: your supervisors. "Here's the book I've been waiting for since 1985. I read this book, wishing with every page, that Rick Gillis had written it long ago." (BizCatalyst360) "The term 'self-promotion' may have negative connotations for many of us, brought up on the idea that bragging is bad - this can be particularly true for women. Fine, Gillis says, just find another way to express the idea, so you can live with it. Think of it as 'informing' or 'reminding' others of your value. And as I'd add, remind yourself that this is part of your constant process of negotiating your professional worth. There are countless terms for professional self-promotion, but the bottom line is that if you don't create and maintain your own image in the workplace, it's quite possible that someone else will." (Forbes) "In any workplace, you're seen first as a commodity, not a person. Accordingly, you need an inventory of your on-the-job accomplishments - the things that express your commercial value to the business. Be able to roll those things off your tongue anytime, anywhere, to anyone." (Inc.) "You owe it to your current employer, as well as hiring managers elsewhere, to describe what you've been up to. 'It's your professional responsibility to make decision-makers aware of the value you bring to the organization,' Gillis says. 'It's part of your job.'" (Fortune) ungekürzt. Language: English. First Published in 1999. Small Businesses Trickling Up in Central and Eastern Europe argues that micro-, small, and medium-sized enterprises in selected countries of Central and Eastern Europe (CEE) have been the key to economic growth rather than privatized large-scale enterprises. Small businesses have come to constitute the most dynamic element of growth in the emerging markets of the CEE region in the last decade. In 1989, most of the countries of the region were still under the political and economic domination of the Soviet Union. Since then a process of liberalization has been unleashed in the region to dismantle statist economic policies and replace them with free market policies. This has involved programs of privatization and restructuring of state-owned enterprises, as well as the promotion of policies to enable a private sector to develop. Small businesses are creating thousands of new jobs while large companies are retrenching and downsizing their workforce. In some countries of the region this process is much further along than in others. In each country, however, the small and medium enterprise (SME) sector has developed at a more rapid pace than has the privatization of the large public companies. The privatization of small and medium-sized state-owned enterprises has been rather more successful. With the economic transition there has been a flurry of new enterprises springing up throughout the region, some registered as legal entities but many micro-enterprises often remaining unregistered in the informal sector. Micro-enterprises are increasingly seen as an important element of this SME sector, although they were traditionally treated separately as belonging to the informal sector and a detriment to economic growth.
