    Edward Lear (1812-1888), den meisten wohl eher für seine Nonsense-Verse bekannt, machte in jungen Jahren durch Illustrationen von Vögeln und Reptilien auf sich aufmerksam. Dieses Set aus 42 handkolorierten Lithographien erschien ursprünglich unter dem Titel Illustrations of the Family of Psittacidae, or Parrots (Illustrationen zur Familie Psittacidae oder der Papageien) und verkörpert den Höhepunkt seiner vergleichsweise kurzen Karriere als naturkundlicher Zeichner, bevor er sich aufgrund nachlassender Sehkraft auf das Schreiben konzentrierte.Zu Lears Zeiten waren lebende Papageien rar und sehr begehrt. Wohlhabende Liebhaber der Naturgeschichte erwarben und veräußerten sie für viel Geld, während die europäische Aristokratie des 19. Jahrhunderts die Vögel aufgrund ihres bunten Gefieders und ihrer Fähigkeit schätzte, die menschliche Stimme zu imitieren. Nicht minder gefragt waren selbstverständlich auch ansprechende Illustrationen. Als eine der ersten Sammlungen, die sich ausschließlich diesen Arten widmeten, umfasst Die Papageien afrikanische, australische und amerikanische Papageien, wie sie von herausragenden Ornithologen wie Sir William Jardine und Prideaux John Selby gezüchtet wurden - Personen, die Lear finanziell unterstützt, inspiriert und angeleitet haben.Im Gegensatz zu anderen ornithologischen Illustratoren, die oft mit ausgestopften Vögeln arbeiteten, schuf der junge und sehr talentierte Lear seine Zeichnungen nach lebenden Papageien, deren Mimik und Gestik er in bemerkenswert lebensechten Illustrationen festhielt. Das neue Medium der handkolorierten Lithographie brachte dabei die lebhafte Eleganz seiner Arbeiten noch besser zum Ausdruck.Diese Sammlung erschien ursprünglich in einer Auflage von lediglich 175 kostbaren Exemplaren, die per Subskription an die führenden britischen Gelehrten und wohlhabenden Sammler lebender Papageien verkauft wurden.
