David Sedaris' new collection of essays - including live recordings! - tells a most unconventional life story. It begins with a North Carolina childhood filled with speech-therapy classes ("There was the lisp, of course, but more troubling than that was my voice itself, with its excitable tone and high, girlish pitch") and unwanted guitar lessons taught by a midget. From budding performance artist ("The only crimp in my plan was that I seemed to have no talent whatsoever") to "clearly unqualified" writing teacher in Chicago, Sedaris' career leads him to New York City and eventually, of all places, France. His move to Paris poses a number of challenges, chief among them his inability to speak the language. Arriving a "spooky man-child" capable of communicating only through nouns, he undertakes language instruction that leads him ever deeper into cultural confusion. Whether describing the Easter bunny to puzzled classmates or watching a group of men play soccer with a cow, Sedaris brings a view and a voice like no other to every unforgettable encounter. The effect is less than fearsome, but Lugosi is terrified, for one of these oddballs has been making threats on his life. He hires Toby Peters to provide security against his unbalanced fans. The detective is not concerned, but he should be. Even fake vampires can kill. Meanwhile, the Warner brothers contact Peters regarding a murder. A body has surfaced in one of Hollywood’s darker corners, and police suspicion has fallen on one of the studio’s star screenwriters: William Faulkner. Pulp writer Johnston McCulley (1993-1938) was the author of hundreds of short stories and novels, published in pulp magazines under his own name and a plethora of pseudonyms. His most famous creation is, without a doubt, the masked swordsman Zorro, made popular by radio, movie, and television adaptations. But before Zorro hit it big, McCulley tried out dozens of different heroes and antiheroes: Black Star, the Avenging Twins, the Man in Purple, the Green Ghost, the Mongoose, Richard Hughes-Railroad Detective, the Spider, the Thunderbolt, the Crimson Clown...the list goes on and on. And it includes a good-hearted pickpocket with a lisp named "Thubway Tham," pursued by Detective Craddock of the New York Police Department. Thubway Tham got his start in the June 4, 1918, issue of Detective Story Magazine, and continued on through more than 100 original stories in various magazines such as Black Book Detective, Clues, Mike Shayne Mystery Magazine, and The Saint Detective Magazine). Tham's last apperance was in January of 1960. That's quite a run. This volume collects 10 stories (plus a humorous anecdote). ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Ken Teutsch. Billie Ridell liked to dabble in the occult mainly because he was an outcast with his classmates at school. Billie stood about four feet nine inches tall with jet black hair and a lisp when he would talk. Billie always dreamed about being Class President one day and even his ultimate dream was to be the President of the United States of America but that was stretching it a bit too far. Billie never stood up for himself he would just suppress his feelings but we all know that's not healthy to bottle up your anger. As Billie was finishing out his senior year at Ragsdale High School Billie's classmates invited him to a Graduation party at Darren's house as a peace offering for all the bad deeds that were done to him during his school years. Billie had no idea this wasn't a peace offering, it was just another trick that would cause Billie to want to get even with his classmates. His classmates didn't know they were about to unleash an evil force that would be their last trick that they would ever play on anyone again. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Bruce Donnelly.
