Die Erhabenheit von Landschafts- und Natureindrücken sind es, die Crumbs Landsfrau Augusta Read Thomas in ihrem Orchesterstück »Words of the Sea« sublim in Szene setzt. Und »Réveil des oiseaux« des Franzosen Olivier Messiaen ist gleichsam von der Natur selbst komponiert. Für Klavier und ein kleines Ensemble geschrieben, hat es einen ganz einzigartigen Klang und Charakter. Sein musikalisches Material stammt von exotischen Vögeln, deren Rufsignale im Klavierpart wie im Ensemble ertönen. »Orion« von Claude Vivier verweist schließlich schon mit seinem Titel auf das ganze Universum, einen immerwährenden Inspirationsquell des kanadischen Komponisten, der davon ausging, dass die »inneren Räume« des Menschen ein Spiegelbild des Alls darstellen. In George Crumb´s »A Haunted Landscape«, the US-American takes the genre of night music to the extreme. The title inspired him to create unique soundscapes intended to convey that »certain places on planet Earth are imbued with an aura of mystery« and tell of ancient stories that still penetrate today´s consciousness ? whether Jerusalem, Delphi or the forests of Crumb´s native West Virginia, where »you can feel the ghosts of the vanished Indians.« The sublimity of landscape and nature impressions are what Crumb´s compatriot Augusta Read Thomas sublimely stages in her orchestral piece »Words of the Sea.« And »Réveil des oiseaux« by Frenchman Olivier Messiaen is composed, as it were, by nature itself. Written for piano and a small ensemble, it has a very unique sound and character. Its musical material comes from exotic birds, whose calls are heard in the piano part as well as in the ensemble. »Orion« by Claude Vivier, after all, refers with its very title to the entire universe, a perennial source of inspiration for the Canadian composer, who assumed that man´s »inner spaces« are a reflection of the universe.
