From a real-life female gunrunner comes this international best seller and unforgettable literary debut. Ten years ago, “Eva Maria Staal” kept a gun in her purse. It was a present from her boss, Jimmy Liu, the international arms dealer extraordinaire with a taste for high-class male escorts. Together, Jimmy and his devoted assistant traveled the world’s most dangerous hotspots, closing deals with ruthless warlords and corrupt generals, and trading Stinger missiles in Karachi, AK-47s in Chechnya, and hollow-point bullets in Islamabad. But burdened by her conscience, Eva Maria finally got out, married an optometrist, and had a baby. Now, assailed with memories of her secret life, she must reconcile her suburban present with a repressed but ineradicable past, one that blasts a hole so deep she doesn’t know how to love her own daughter. Writing with a knowing intelligence only an insider could provide, this pseudonymous author has created a debut with remarkable intensity that examines the razor-thin line separating those who are drowned from those who are saved. ungekürzt. Strange and seemingly unrelated symptoms continued to plague me. My PCP told me that there was nothing more that she could do. She refused to see me anymore for these same symptoms, although nothing that she had come up with had helped in any way. Her final conclusion was that it must be stress!   I was experiencing dizziness, allergy symptoms, itching all over, tunnel vision, rapid heart rate, and low blood pressure, not to mention debilitating fatigue, body aches, and fever. My hair was falling out and all of my fingernails broke off and stopped growing. Every test came back normal!  I saw an optometrist, an endocrinologist, a balance MD, a cardiologist, an Ear, Nose, and Throat Doctor. Each took me through a plethora of tests and exercises, all yielding the same results. An MRI and a CAT scan revealed nothing abnormal. It would appear that I was the most normal person on planet Earth! The doctors were baffled as they searched for some label to attach to the strange things that were happening to me.   ungekürzt. Donald believes he knows all there is to know about seeing. An optometrist in suburban Boston, he is sure that he and his wife, Viv, who runs the local stables, are both devoted to their two children and to each other. Then Mercury - a gorgeous young thoroughbred with a murky past - arrives at Windy Hill, and everything changes. Mercury's owner, Hilary, is a newcomer to town who has enrolled her daughter in riding lessons. When she brings Mercury to board at Windy Hill, everyone is struck by his beauty and prowess, particularly Viv. As she rides him, Viv begins to dream of competing again, embracing the ambitions that she had harboured - and relinquished - as a young woman. Her daydreams soon morph into consuming desire, and her infatuation with the thoroughbred escalates to obsession. Donald may have 20/20 vision, but he is slow to notice how profoundly Viv has changed and how these changes threaten their quiet, secure world. By the time he does, it is too late to stop the catastrophic collision of Viv's ambitions and his own myopia. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Derek Perkins, Nicol Zanzarella. "A desperate, painfully honest attempt to confront the monstrous crimes of the twentieth century."-Time Selected by the Modern Library as one of the 100 best novels of all time Slaughterhouse-Five, an American classic, is one of the world's great antiwar books. Centering on the infamous World War II firebombing of Dresden, the novel is the result of what Vonnegut describes as a twenty-three-year struggle to write a book about what he himself witnessed as an American prisoner of war. It combines science fiction, autobiography, humor, historical fiction, and satire in an account of the life of Billy Pilgrim, a barber's son turned draftee turned optometrist turned alien abductee. Billy, like Vonnegut, experiences the destruction of Dresden as a POW, and, as with Vonnegut, it is the defining moment of his life. Unlike the author, he also experiences time travel, or coming "unstuck in time." Billy Pilgrim's odyssey reflects the mythic journey of our own fractured lives as we search for meaning in what we fear most. Praise for Slaughterhouse-Five "Poignant and hilarious, threaded with compassion and, behind everything, the cataract of a thundering moral statement."-The Boston Globe "Very tough and very funny . . . sad and delightful . . . very Vonnegut."-New York Times "Splendid art . . . a funny book at which you are not permitted to laugh, a sad book without tears."-Life

It's been said the eyes are the windows to the soul. What happens, however, when those windows crack? Tempe, Arizona resident Greg Gnops, is about to find out. When an accident involving sunlight and a telescope alters Greg's vision, he suddenly finds himself with a strange new ability that drains psychic fragments of a person's soul from their body, killing his victim in the process. Despite trying to hide behind a pair of sunglasses, the slightest naked glimpse activates his power. And the next available appointment for a visit with an optometrist is weeks away at the earliest. Meanwhile, Greg's sister, Ashley, winds up spiraling out of control with a lack of a job, chronic drinking, and a boyfriend, Flint Kyles, who doesn't seem the least bit interested in showing her any affection. When Ashley's best friend, Dani Staras, beseeches Greg to help her persuade Ashley to leave Flint and regain some life stability, Greg's efforts to lay low and avoid eye contact with people is thrown into peril. Torn between wanting to help his sister and trying to keep anyone else from falling victim to his lethal stare, Greg turns to Serenity Fleace, a psychic who may not be what she appears. Can Greg figure out a way to stop absorbing people's minds, or will Ashley's latest drinking episode jeopardize Greg and everyone around him before he can get to the eye doctor? ungekürzt. Wink and Grow Rich is the fable about a boy being raised by his carpenter father, who is both sick and tired. In fact, he is tired of being sick and sick of being tired. Every day for the last 20 years the carpenter has visited the Well of Wealth and spent a dollar, because it is generally accepted by the townsfolk that if they give generously to the Well, it will in turn give generously to them. On this day, the carpenter is so ill that he is unable to visit the Well, so he entrusts his nine-year-old son, Richard, with a crumpled but treasured dollar and sends him in his place. Along the way, Richard discovers that the Well of Wealth is not where he thought it would be, so he follows a different, more overgrown path, on which he meets an old woman, an optometrist, a plumber, a gardener, a fisherman, a rower, a musician, and an innkeeper. These intriguing and mysterious characters act as guides for Richard and share their wisdom. They have all built their wealth in very different ways, yet there is something about each that is common to all. The story is intended to make the listener think more deeply about the dynamics of wealth creation. The keys to wealth are contained in the story behind the story, the lesson behind the lesson. To find these keys, the listener needs to become better at "seeing" - a philosophy the author sums up as, "What you see is always what you get." ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Paul Dann.
